Okay I just got my GP2X from gp2x.co.uk (firmware 1.2.1). First thing is the USB function doesn't work. Connected to PC loaded it on GP2X menu but nothing shows up in My Computer (Windows XP). I've got a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II card and I connected it to my PC via my digital camera and formatted it to FAT32. I put Drmdx, squidesnes, clonekeen2x, some music and jpeg files on it. The GP2X doesn't seem to be able to read any of it. Nothing is wrong with the card as the files are clearly there and it is working fine with my digital camera. Why won't the GP2X read it?

You may find it's the FAT32 that is the problem. There has been some discussion on this previously. A quick search of the forums will probably turn something up ;)

Hm. That doesn't sound right, it should be fine if it is formatted as FAT32.

My mistake, I felt sure I rememberreading a thread about it a while ago.

Apologies for the misinformation  !

*edit* (Does the suggested quick search) ahem that would be the gp32 then. Shoot that man for not paying attention!

I see some people have had problems with cards formatted with their camera. I've ordered a card reader but it's yet to arrive. I tried my other 256mb Kingston card and the GP2X read the photos with no problems. I then tried formatting it through my camera connected to the PC (format done in Windows). Put the photos back on it and it again works! I then tried reformatting the Sandisk 2GB card put some photos on it but it simply doesn't work with the GP2X.

My Gp2x doesn't work with Windows either but I use a card reader which saves alot of time and batterys. But before that I used my cam to format my card to FAT32 and had no trouble. I did hear that there was some type of problem with cards as big as 2GB though.

USB also works fine for me. I think mine is also 1.1. I turn the GP2x on, plug it in, then select Settings > USB, and then Windows XP detects it as a new device.

More frustration! Unfortuantely my new USB 2.0 card reader his only seems to recognise my Sandisk 2GB Ultra II SD card it as a 1GB card. Even my ancient USB 1.1 digital camera is able to format it as a 2GB card. Yet even after formatting it in my digital camera when I put it into the card reader it only shows up as a 1GB card. Only positive is that now the GP2X is recognising the card after using the card reader. Can anyone help or does it mean I need a new card reader?

Your card reader is old, and is only designed to read in FAT, as far as I can see. FAT has a limit of 1GB, and FAT32 has a limit of something higher that I can't remember.

Well it has formatted my card in FAT32 format. It looks like it has a limit of 1GB cards. Anyone know a cheap card reader in the UK that will read 2GB cards?!

I can find plenty of USB 2.0 readers but they all seem to be limited to 1GB.

This one is £5: SD/MMC Card Reader

However, if you feel like being prepared for everything, this is £6: All-in-one Card Reader

I can see it is a cheap card reader but will it support 2GB cards as most of these cheap ones don't seem to? After contacting Picstop (replied in 10 mins!) they say this £12 Sandisk will work with 2GB

I don't have a 2GB SD, but I've got the first one and it works with my 1GB. Go for the Sandisk one if you want to make sure it'll work OK.

Yeah I've ordered the Sandisk reader along with an Ansmann Energy 8 charger and some 2600mAh Ansmann rechareables. £67! This GP2X is turning out to be more expensive than I thought.

Now I am getting annoyed. The Sandisk reader has arrived and it too is only detecting the card as 1GB. When I put the Sandisk 2GB Ultra II SD card into the Sandisk reader it only reads 1GB. If I try to format it in the Sandisk reader it only treats it as a 1GB card. When I put it back in my digital camera I am told the card needs to be formatted and it formats it as a 2GB card. Put it into the Sandisk reader and only 1GB detected.

Both the 20 in 1 generic card reader as well as the Sandisk card reader can only read 1GB yet my ancient USB 1.1 digital camera is reading the full 2GB.

What kind of nonsense is this?!
