Davec's Joy Cap No Longer Works For Me :(

Having just received a replacement GP2X which worked ok with DaveCs cap, my new unit has lots of problems with the cap.

When I ran some games I noticed it would become unresponsive and which I twisted it 360 degress nothing happened then I would move the joystick another way and it would work. I just tried the joystick test routine and the same problem, it works then it does not.

I isolated the problem down to the clicking mechanism of the joystick and davec's cap, because what happens is that pressing down the joystick with all the weight at an extreme angle (caused by the size of the cap) causes the stick to get locked and not snap back, when its in this position nothing happens until I move it and it clicks back into place.

When I use the normal cap this does not happen because the area that moves the joystick with the weight is much more centered.

I tried different sizes of paper in the shaft and was able to reproduce this problem. I can only assume that the stem of the stick is much larger, because it appears much larger than my other model.

Anybody else seen this problem ?

DG

Nope, mine is fine with daves cap......and i hope it continues because ive lost my original one! lol

I can see what you mean about the stick taking more force though.

Are you sure that the edge of the cap isnt hitting against the front of the gp2x? I had that problem with the original cap so i put a little piece of card in the cap just to raise it about a mm so that it didnt hit the side any more

I think i've worked it out on this model gp2x the cap fits too loose so when you start twisting it when you manage to twist the actual shaft the stick goes funny, I can tell that the actual shaft position keeps changing direction when this happens and I pull the stick back off. You can tell the shaft position is changing from the center of the stem. When the shaft position is able to twist it will cause this event of not reading inputs I would assume.

Man what total garbage to try and get a working solution.

I cant really blame the distributer, who gave me good service by giving me a new unit within 2 days of receiving my old gp2x. Jezz I wish I woulda kept this I can live with the headphone jack issue rather than this.

DG.

I hate to say it but your joystick assembly is probably defective. I have sent out a couple of hundred of these and no one else has mentioned this problem.

It could be that you didn't press down far enough or it is pressed in too much causing the top to touch too.

It's metal-reinforced plastic. It doesn't stop working. Your joystick assembly has stopped working.

Don't blame it on the cap, man!

Yeah found the problem I think, when I use the cap, it causes the shaft to turn and twist. when the shaft turns it becomes unresponsive. I have had the cap in at different levels and all the same, and the cap in at full and its not touching the top.

If I can get the shaft to "stick" in a position and remove my hands from it, then something is wrong with the joystick assembly.

Though like I say cos the normal cap has a more centered gravity it does not happen.

Fuck this, this GPH stuff is just junk, I dont care what the forgiving fanboys here say.

And I cant send it back again because the normal cap works ok, and they would test it and say that as well.

Bye then.

The problem is not the cap,it`s the crappy excuse for a joystick. The only thing that would remedy this problem would be some sort of deadzone adjuster.

Why is that bye, I will stick around and spread the word to warn others about bad quality builds. In fact i'm gonna fire off a whole set of blog review sites that will show up on google.

Man when I spoke to the distributer they said they had very few returns of hardware. But many here have the headphone/speaker jack cuttoff problem, yet dont return it.
So they have no returns because everybody here whines but dont return, they feel thankfull they have an open handheld.

DG.

The headphone/speaker jack cutoff problem is very easily solved - just three blobs of solder.

Other than that, yeah, go ahead and kill a handheld. Just don't come running to us when you can't sleep at night :)

I find it odd that the old cap works.. how high is the new cap (DaveCs) from the case in mm? It shouldn't be higher then 4mm.

If you still hav this problem then just speak to your distributer and see if you can get a refund or a replpacement.

So your GP2X works fine - you just can't modify it. No other company would support you on that. If you wrote a letter to Sony saying "Hey, I can't change _______ for something I got off the internet" they probably won't even reply. The unit you received works. You have absolutely no standpoint for complaint.

Yeah and the only reason I bought Daves Cap was because they GPH fail to deliver on its core functionality, namely being a game machine which they advertise yet it fails on the most basic level that being the joystick on a freaking game machine. Can you imagine the PSP or DS with this funny little controller that 100s of people search for a solution ?

So dont say I have no reason to complain.

In fact you dont complain enough, most here just whine and take it. And all the time GPH think everybody likes it.

Remember, they are Korean and probably do not read the compaints on this board.

DG.

You still have no reason to return it because your unit works. Perhaps if you had researched before you bought it you would have realised some people don't like the joystick (although in my opinion there is nothing wrong with it). The fact that you and some other people don't like the joystick doesn't mean that the console is faulty and needs to be returned. Just put up with it.

And because I don't have any complaints to GPH, why should I complain? The only problem is Battery life, and that's most likely being addressed.

Simple solution: make your own joystick mod. Great thing about the GP2X is, it's completely open, and you can do pretty much what you like with it (within hardware limits, of course).

Despite its faults, the GP2X is exactly what it was intended to be: open, community-based, fun, and the true successor to the GP32, the greatest handheld experiment ever.

Er... haven't you payed attention? The PSP's digital pad was absolutely BROKEN on many, many of the first PSPs. It wouldn't even go left!

Even now, a PSP's perfectly working digital pad is utter garbage, and even worse than the GP2X's controls.

There are people here who have completed difficult games with the stock GP2X stick (check out the feats thread) -- now how is that possible if it doesn't have "core functionality?"

It's simple. You have a working GP2X, you tried to mod it and have failed. Either find a solution like so many others have (DaveC's cap seems to work for everyone else), stick with the stock stick and get used to it, use one of the many other mod suggestions (including coating the stock stick to make it less slippery), or sell the unit on eBay.

My guess is you'll just need to shave a bit off DaveC's cap stem or stick some bluetack in there to stop it twisting on the shaft.

No the simple solution is to contact the distributer on Monday and just ask for a refund and forget the whole sorry story, even the the normal joystick cap has started to do it, when I'm moving to left or right it sometimes gets stuck and the whole thing wont move left or right further, the stem is not touching the sides ... its just crap. Its happening when the shaft mechanims is twisting like a paddle !
