Gp2x Is Highly Overrated,imo

I recieved my GP2X this morning and I have to say that I`m totally unimpressed by the quality and design of it. The GP2X feels unfinished at it is virtually unusable because of the Thumbstick and Scanline issues. I feel cheated out of £130 for something that feels like an early prototype. :(

thank God we have someone here' that's not a totally fanboy.

I'm so glad you pointed that out ... you gave me another annoying sig to adblock with firefox :) Another step toward faster forum browsing ...

well done hanz tm 111111111111111111111111111111 ;)

Im really happy with my gp2x, especially now i skinned it!

WHY OH WHY are people calling it virtually unusable? ah i see the words VIRTUALLY placed there, so it means that it physically IS usable then!

I have many uses for it! it is very nice to look and, and with some lubrication it fits nicely in the poopenshaft!:p

Wow talk about denial, i mean come on guys the gp2x has more faults than something built by monkeys, i for one is staying well away from it until gamepark holdings get their act together and sort out the biuld/firmware issues. Looking at the current state of things you might as well get a soldering iron, some chips, resistors and circuit boards and biuld your own. I am not spending £100+ on something half baked which needs pacthing just to be able to perform it's primary functions properly and runs risk of becoming a very expensive brick after each firmware upgrade.
I think Criag needs to have some strong words with gamepark because people are parting with their money in return for what seems to be a flashy turd.
And yes people need to face the facts at the current state the gp2x is in, it's not worth the £100+ you a paying for it.

You can flame me all you want, but just remember this post when you are looking at an expensive brick. :p B)

I'm not gonna start a flamewar here, but how can you say that it needs patching to be able to perform its primary functions? I'm still running 1.0.1 and I can play games and listen to MP3s on it! Also, there are Robster's upgrade utils to brick-proof your 2x if you really wanna upgrade. And my GP2X is far from an expensive brick - it's the best christmas present I've recieved in bloody years!

Boo hoo.

I noticed the scanlines, but I wasn't too bothered. The LCD tweak thing fixes them so I was even happier. I don't know what the problem is with the thumbstick thing though- it works fine!

The MP3 player I'm not crazy about, but I'm sure when people get coding various apps, better MP3 players will be available. Preferably with button locking and position search.

This point I must also counter: Position search, even if it's crappily done, is performed with the d-stick when the menu is not open. Button-lock can be done by pressing select. This also deactivates the screen, saving a fair bit of battery life.
So meh.

My apologies, I didn't know that and I was wrong about that. I stand corrected.

once again,

don't get me wrong, I'm still getting a gp2x but at a later time when the firmware/batterylife is better.

and when more emulators get more to near perfect.

only thing is I don't see the gp2x as the 2nd comming or best thing since slice bread.
which I think some of your here think and blind to some obvious problems.

I've never seen any adverts saying the GP2X is a super duper 3d capable machine , but i still bought one , yeah it has a few problems which are being fixed also the unit has been so much fun for me i can watch films on my work break , play a bit of Golden Axe or just chill out listening to some music , I think the console is cheap for what it is capable of and i wouldn't really knock it until you have had it a while. It is a nice little machine and i wouldn't trade it for anything :) , by the way i have DaveC's cap and it is amazing.

I'm not getting one until the problems are sorted. I do want a GP2x, but i refuse to buy a new handheld that requires amounts of DIY just to make it do what it's supposed to.

Also, the joystick concern. I thought it was the deadzone that was the problem, that moving it small degrees in a direction wouldn't register, requiring the stick to be moved to it's extremes (and thus ruining the experience of any fast reaction game)... so how would a new cup fix this? Isn't this a problem with the contacts of the joystick, rather than what we put our thumb on?

I am not some anti GPH person before i get flamed. I've been here a while, and i really REALLY would love to buy a GP2x, but i'm not a DIY person. I can't solder, i don't want to disect a joystick, and i'm scared of firmware updates because i'm that "lucky" kinda guy who will end up bricking his handheld, on something silly or mundane.

I do however have alot of respect for the people who own and support the GP2x. I'm near OCD with my handhelds/consoles, and a slight fault gets me so riled, that i end up hiding the items away, so i never see the faults.

Much respect, one of the first games I got hold of in preparation for the arrival of my GP2X. Golden Axe and Streets of Rage ruled in the day though I now find it extremely difficult probably due to the lack of a decent gamepad at the moment. I've been looking through my dump of broken consoles to see what games I once had and will have again in a portable format.

Slightly off topic, are there any plans for a Dosbox emulator. Most PC games would probably require a keyboard but playing some of the older titles on the move would be nice.

You mean something like a really really slow copy of Bochs?

I wouldn't be too harsh on someone saying they are disapointed with the GP2X. He didn't insult anyone, he simply blemished your beloved GP2X forum. That hardly warrants insults on his intelligence. Are we in kindergarten? (Perhaps many of you are in something far worse; eternal bordom, stuck infront of your computer, viciously attacking newbies, fanboys and the insidiousness of those posting in the wrong forum.)

I am in love with my GP2X and I will be doing everything possible with it. Although, in the hands of someone less experienced with computers than I am (;a customizing, computing nut case that would goto linux if I had little more IQ points), the GP2X is daunting. We all remember taking it out of the box and thinking "this is smaller than I though it would be" and "it feels a little cheap, as though if I were to drop it, it would shatter into many pieces" and of course, the USB didn't work and I couldn't do a thing with it ontill I bought a card-reader and 1GB SD card. Also, the Video player doesn't play all the video formats that were advertized on the official GP2X site itself. (Wich was DivX, Xvid, wmv, mpeg, etc..And as far as I know, it still doesn't with the current Firmware releases, definantly correct me there if i'm wrong, thanks) So I was very disapointed. But, I knew and still know the potential of the GP2X.

The idea of the GP2X is the freedom to do what you want with it. Comming from old-school Pocket PC days with an early ipaq, you KNOW I would love the GP2X. You could do MANY things with a Pocket PC (Ipaq, Dell Axim), but it just wasn't designed for video games. Although of course, that didn't stop people from designing emulators for it. The last time I touched my Ipaq, I tried the playstation emulator for it. At this time, it was still rumored that all psx emulators for it were fakes, hoaxes. I don't underestimate hardware so I wanted to try it and see for myself, and sure enough, it ran tekken 3 (very slow of course). You can port/clone anything. There are tricks to "emulation." Coders would no waste thier time if there wasn't at least a glimer of hope of that Emulator running at a playable speed. And reading the threades about the GP2X Psx emulator shows that there isn't just hope, the coders are very confident in the GP2X's ability to emulate the PS1. So don't shoot down the possibility of a given emulator running well on the GP2X. The goal of emulation is NOT to fully emulate hardware. Its infact to virtualize the games that were created for that specific hardware/console. Dynamic recompilation, where the programing concepts of emulation naturally lead to, in itself is not emulation of anything, it is the conversion of code, designed for a console system, into code more native to, or compatible with, the GP2X. Laugh now if you wish, but I will laugh when I see you all playing Ten Eighty Snowboarding. Yes, I did mention an N64 game.

Its sad that many people come into these forums to do what? insult "newbies" or "fanboys"? We aught to take a pole and find the average age of the users of these forums. I would guess that would be between 15 and 17. If I'm wrong, thats very sad. People seem much more cruel or brash when there seems to be no consequence for thier actions. Quiet cowards sign online and suddenly become bold conservatives that call people Jew's because its something they heard on TV and so now they assume its accepted and they rant and rave about how some other person hasn't got a brain in thier head. While in real life, they're the quietest little mouse of a person. Irony is just funny that way.

With all of that said, I'd like to point out that I simply wish all of us here would be just a little more mature. Don't say anything here that you wouldn't say to your neighbor (for fear of getting your a** kicked). Thank you.

John
