I recieved my GP2X this morning and I have to say that I`m totally unimpressed by the quality and design of it. The GP2X feels unfinished at it is virtually unusable because of the Thumbstick and Scanline issues. I feel cheated out of £130 for something that feels like an early prototype. :(

Oh! Is this some kind of talking point?! Cos that sounds like fun. I really wanna talk about your troubles. As I feel so sorry for you.

its not like noone told you about the issues.
the scanlines can be helped with the lcd tweaker, the stick sucks, but you have to get used to it.

As a Noob, I should be the one moaning about this product, but I won't because it is like no other handheld. I have managed to get Duke3d, Quake, Outcast, Squidesnes, DrMD all running fine! £130 for endless emus/homebrews is great, and I really don't think the thumb stick is as bad as everyone makes out!

I owned an Atari LYNX once, now that was S**T build quality(buttons always going), this is miles better!

So chill and enjoy the exclusivity of owning a GP2X :)

my gripe is that the developers and distributors of the GP2X know that these problems exist, yet they have done nothing to fix them. As consumers we should not have to accept unfinished, sloppy hardware like this.

Gamepark have to fix the control stick for a reasonable sum.

The damn thing is more slippery than a wet soap. I have done the experiments, much like mythbusters, wet sope is not very slippery at all compared to stick-cap. Similarly a teflon cooking pan, much less slippery.

The stick-cap is only for making breakfast, we need a better cap!

A few weeks ago, craig said a replacement was on the way... where is it?

Oh, you're smart, you are. Posting a 'GP2X sucks' rant in a forum full of GPH fanboys. You're a brave man.

But seriously, who cares about the build quality, when you've got your endless supply of free games? As long as it works OK, and doesn't fall apart, the build quality matter pales in comparison to the enthusiasm and great developers behind it.

If you're annoyed about the stick, buy a DaveC cap. If you're annoyed about the screen, your argument is justified, as the screen is sharp and clear in hardware, and surpasses the PSP screen (not talking about size here) completely, but the software used to control it is destroying it completely. The CPU/LCD Tweaker might solve some of your problems with the screen, but it won't solve all of them, so you'll have to wait for new firmwares.

I'm wondering ... exactly how much research did you do before buying this obscure handheld?

All the 'problems' you're complaining about have been well documented and discussed at these forums since launch. Seeing that you joined in November, you should have read about these issues ... even if by accdent just perusing the forums.

Return it for a refund, since voicing your complaints here won't get your money back ;)

If you don't like it return it. You are not pointing out anything new to us.

The stick cap can be replaced (eg DaveC's cap) and the LCD can be tweaked with the LCD/CPU tweaker program.

The developers are the consumers in this case so why should they fix the problem?
The distrobutors can't do much besides stop selling them till GPH start changing the build.

Just out of interest have you actually managed to install anything yet or do you find the stick so bad that selecting icons is difficult?

2X is massivly overrated, but if you didnt know what you were buying youre a fool and diserve to be parted with your money, if you *did* research your purchace like a person with dual figure IQ points, then you knew what you were getting into.

End ¬_¬

I have a few emulators installed, all of which are virtually unplayable due to the crap joystick. I have ordered a joystick cap from DaveC, but i understand this will not completely fix the issue.

Ive only had mine for a short time, and its been well worth it. Granted, the stick needs to go and die in a corner where no one can see it, but at least it lets us use the 2x. The screen, on the other hand, i have no problems with. Some people just cant accept the non-silver platter-ness of the gp2x B).

As consumers we should not have to accept unfinished, sloppy hardware like this.

I disagree. The hardware does the job it was designed for, allowing the console to play movies, mp3's, view pictures and text files, and play games.

overrated? It's universally ignored. I think gp2x is only overrated *here* on the fanboy forum--and as far as fanboy forums go, we do an awful lot of ripping on gph.

Had mine a few days now. Was really unimpressed until I worked out how to get rid of the terrible flickering on the screen.

Now it's good for Megadrive games. Lots run at a solid 60fps with sound, which is good for me :)

It'll be perfect once they sort out the screen config problems in the firmware, and we start seeing the other emulators (C64, SNES, Spectrum) hit the same level as DRMD.

I dont see a problem in the build quality at all. The only problem is the joystick imo. It's nice having the additional power over the gp32 and the sd card for storing loads of stuff on. It took me by surprise how well neogeo games work on gngeo.

I dont really notice too many problems with the screen. There is quite a difference in the screen when running off a power adapter rather than batteries, so I wonder if getting better batteries than my current 2100 rechargeables (maybe a different make) might improve the screen even further.
