I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

Just got my GP2X today after placing the order last week :) Got my batteries charged up and gave a few things a try, Quake, Duke3D, ScummVM, etc. It's great :D

Only problem is the Joystick. Noticed that old thread showing that some of the contact points are smaller for diagonals on the MK2 (or reg. directions on MK1). Has there been any attempts to fix this by anyone? I find it quite annoying

morning all,

my gp2x arrived this morning, woohoo, but my 2gb SD card isnt here yet, should be today though.

I am a convert from the PSP as I was having more and more disappointments with retail games and no very good emulation so I am looking forward to some emulation, mainly NEOGEO, fingers crossed neo turf masters works and works well.. <_<

when the card arrives I think ill pop down Maplins and get a reader and some higher powered batteries and a comaptible PSU, then im set and ready for fun(hopefully)

hi all..

Got my MK2 yesterday. Took only three days to get here (Oregon, USA) from Hong Kong. Excellent service from lik-sang. My main interest is emulation, so I've been playing lots of C64 stuff like Space Taxi, and Jumpman. A hand-held C64! Wonderful!

Also having lots of fun with with Vectar. Great game. Still need to get some MAME ROMs so I can play Joust and Gravitar.

Any advice for us Mac OS X users? How about converting video files? Can it be done with freeware?

About the screen protector. I haven't yet peeled off the flimsy shipping screen protector. I have an iPod and that screen mysteriously got scratched within 24 hours, and it got worse after that, so I'm a bit wary of exposing the GP2X, even if there is a hard screen protector underneath.

How easily is the standard screen cover damaged? (I'll call it a cover, since there is some confusion about "protectors") Will it be messed up through normal use? Will putting the GP2X in a case likely scratch it?

Great site guys. Thanks.

Got my GP2X this morning (much kudos to gp2x.net.au!). After a lil jiggery-pokery, I transferred some stuff I had lying around (random mp3s, a small video etc) just to test. But now I cannot for the life of me get my machine (neither WinXP SP2 nor Ubuntu) to recognise the GP2X via its USB connection (via my USB 2.0 card). So without a card reader I'm stuck staring at the impudent beast for the weekend.

I'm not holding any of this against the machine, but it'll be nice when I can actually get something on there and USE it. I shall continue bashing my head against the wall in the meantime.

Card reader's a must, but in the meantime try all USB ports on your machine, even older 1.1 ones.

Bizarrely, of the two identical USB ports at the front of my PC, one will recognize some devices, while the other recognizes different things the other won't!

Welcome to the community! :D

The community centered around the GP2X is one of the best things about owning one. The folks here are extreemly helpful, creative and talented. Scarce a day goes by that some new unthought of application/program/emulator/homebrew game/mod shows up to wow folks with its usefulness and inginuity.

Let me first direct you guys to the ultimate links topic by Paradox:

Ultimate Links

Many of your questions about video encoding programs/joystick mods, etc. are covered in this section. If you lose the page its pinned/stickied in the general forum.

ASK:

DaveC and Radek and others are working on a Dpad replacement kit option at present.

Check out the ultimate links topic to see joystick mods/caps/tips in this area. Also try a Search about specifics with the search tool at the top of the main page.

Strum Strum:

Neo Geo emulation is spectacular albiet a little tough to set up at first-Check out the help forums as there are several great guides for this. NEO GEO is at this point a crown jewel in the GP2X'S Crown as are the Mame and Sega Genesis emulators. You wont be without a great lineup of games with this little baby!

Tommy:

There are many mac users here. And yes, there are freeware programs to encode video for mac. Try the links page, and if you dont find one there try searching the forums with the search function at the top of the page - its a common question with new users with macs.

Under normal usage the hard screen protector is pretty durable and scratch proof. Ive been pretty rough on mine cramming it in and out of a too small neoprene handspring visor soft case and havent managed to scratch it yet. And if you do...hell, a replacement one only costs 6 dollars US(about the same as a screen protector). If your worried get a screen protector anyway. The most annoying thing about the screen is its SIZE in comparison to the controls. Im always leaving thumbprints on the sides of the screen after rocking some games. It may cause you to compulsively clean the screen-just use a small microfibre cloth and you'll be golden.

Line O'Stevens:

Gatorooze' input is a good one. Ive had some port trouble in the past and switching to a different usb port fixed the problem. But you will find that nothing replaces a good card reader for speed of transfer/reliability.

Shikaku posted a $3.00 US(including shipping!)Card Reader that everyone has had great luck with.

Once again, Welcome to the club! I know you're gonna love having a GP2X!...I know I do! :D

Well, I have a sob story.

I got my gp2x last Wednesday, along with official tv-out & ac adapter. I had my SD reader and two cards. I used the AC adapter, turned it on, tried the zektor demo - AAAAAGGGGGHHHH, the sound is distorted, and sometimes just becomes a loud horrible buzz. After hours of trying different combinations of sound-limiting, volume, applications, headphones, speakers, batteries, ac adapters, I had to resign myself to the fact that I got a dud. I'm hoping that the company that sent it to me will hurry the heck up and finally let me send it back. I am dying to to play with this.

:(

Hey Morpheus384,

Great responses! Thanks very much for the help. I'll check out the Ultimate Links.

The first test was ok - no damage on the GP2x. Just installed "Frodo C64 Emu" for a test ride. Wow - running all very well & smooth.

So excuse me - I have to try "Choplifter" one more time

More impression will follow asap !

CYA !

I am so-o-o-o jealous. While I patiently wait for the return-saga on my DOA unit to play out, I am occupying my time with shuffling files in and out of my 1-gig SD. I bought a second just for videos. I found that the screen is small enough that even very low bps xvid looks pretty good.

For the Mac, I like using http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ to convert divx. I use it primarily to convert videos to flash but the best thing is that unlike other tools where you have to choose a "from" format, you can just drag an entire collection of videos regardless of formats and just walk away.

It's been a month or so since I received my GP2X and it is easily the best US$179 I've spent on gaming I can remember!

Markiej,

So sorry about you're bad unit! That must reeeaaally suck. :(

But if its any consolation, your one of the first in a long time(since the Mark II s came out) that got a dud.

I know your saying "I dont feel Special" ...lol

At least you can be reasonably sure that your replacement wont be another dissapointment.

For video you'll find that the GP2X works extreemly well. While it doesnt support all that was it was thought to at present, it holds great promise, and folks are working on new functionality for the movie player. Plus a firmware upgrade is over due, and might add some more features. Divx 3 and higher/avi and Xvid/avi has had great luck for me.

You'll find that an average Xvid 700 mb movie looks stellar with TV out. And if you use one of the freeware encoders like say, PocketDivix to reencode the video just for GP2X playback (e.g 320x240), it lessens the file to 200 mb or less and still looks the same quality wise on the GP2X screen.

(just set it for the Iriver PMP-320x240-and click>Advanced options on the bottom of the screen>choose Xvid/VHQ) ;)

Even watching this scaled down video stretched to your TV will give you VCR/VCD type quality with TV-out. So with your 1 gb card, you could have:

A: a full movie+ in dvd quality to bring to a friend's house for playback; or

B: 5 full movies to take on the go.

hope this is helpful :)

Achim:

Congrats on your new arrival! :) , I too am jealous, even though Ive already got mine. I remember how exciting it was when I got mine in the mail. Makes me wish I were you all over again  . I remember the first time I saw the c64 boot screen on my little handheld.....man did it bring back memories. And the functionality of the C64 emu is quite excellent ;) .

long time lurker, first time poster.

got my little box of gpx goodness on Saturday! very impressed so far.

I struggled through until today with some normal batteries until today when I managed to score some 2700 mAh Ni-MHs. I think the little critter must have been built with these in mind, because it sang in delight and nearly leapt out of my hand.

expensive disposable batteries just died after an hour, cheaper brands after 5-10 mins, none of them could cut playing a movie. I hope I haven't damaged my wee beastie by feeding it meagre rations.

anyhoo, really pleased now that the proper power has arrived, and slightly bemused by the nay sayers. you're kidding right? this thing is like pandoras box without the bad bits.

so thanks gph for my new toy, with it's infinite possibiliities. and thanks to all the bright ones for all the emu and homebrew work.

keep on keepin on.

Well school started on monday and ive been pretty busy and have had alot on my mind (remembering assignments, room numbers, homework etc) and i totally forgot i ordered my gp2x....until today, cause when i got home a package was sitting on my doorstep (inside, a gp2x mk2, a 2 gig sd card, a case, tv out cable, and a disc full of software) the only down side was that gbax was out of PSU's (so i dont have one yet) but i do have to say....this is a great handheld!!!!! (alot better than the gp32 imo) im lovin it!! (and ive already filled up my 2gig sd card :D )
