External Power Supply


I think this may have been mentioned elsewhere, but for all you in the UK, I purchased this one yesterday:
Adapter At Maplin

It works a treat. I used it with my gp2x for about an hour this morning. It comes with the correctly-sized plug, is DC, 1.2A, supplies regulated voltage and it has a dial to select voltage you require.

Mind you, it is pretty bulky and not exactly the most lightweight adapter you will ever encounter. But if you are only ever going to use it at home then that shouldn't be much of an issue.

I have this, it works fine but is much bigger than I was expecting. It also makes a slightly annoying hum when it's on. Perhaps not the best it you plan on taking the powers supply with you somewhere, but decent for use at home.

I have a plug-top adapter that looks identical to the Argos one referenced by #41 and #72 (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9828915.htm.)

It works fine when set to 3V and using the smallest of the plug-tips (the second one down in the picture.) The connector is angled 90 degrees which makes it possible to use the unit while it's plugged in, and I haven't noticed any difference between running on batteries or PSU. You do need to make sure the plug is connected the right way round ("TIP" <-> "-") and that the voltage selector switch isn't moved.

theoddbot, my Digitor plug pack squeals now. Took a few days to start, but now it squeals. the volume of which is dependant on the amount of current being drawn.

My A/C adapter is one I bought from Walmart or about $15. It a universal one and has selectable voltages from 3v to 12v and outputs like 1.3a. It also has multiple tips for a most devices. The one for the 2x was the smallest one. I tested it with a multimeter and it actually outputs 3.3v. It works great.

The first one should be ok. I run my 2x off 3V all the time without problems, but some adaptors can be fussy and not work properly for some reason. Some people even run there 2x at 4.5V (eg. Reesy).

I suppose it all depends on how much care and love you want to give your gp2x :) Some people prefer to spend the extra, some not..
 
If you've got a power supply with two holes at the end of the lead to stick connectors in (standard, I think) but are stuck because none of the connectors fit the GP2X, don't worry, you can get a suitable connector for 49p at Maplin!

The one you need is type S, 2.5 x 0.75mm.
 
RECOMMENDED - I bought this today from Argos for £7.99 it works a treat and comes with the correct tip for the GP2X.

working GP2X adaptor

WARNING - my SUNPOWER branded SPS895 regulated DC adaptor from Maplin rated at 1000ma at 3v DOES NOT WORK - be careful what you buy. Maplin do have a 14 day retunr policy but there is nothing in there catalogue for £7.99 that will do the job for the GP2X so go to Argos.

If anyone is still struggling centre negative means the same as tip negative and almost all DC adaptors are able to change polarity by reversing the connection between the base and the the lead or the lead and the adaptor tip.
 
For UK readers. I just bought one of these: I got it from John Lewis, not from Amazon. It works perfectly, using the smallest of the supplied plugs. The polarity is switchable by changing the way the lead connects to the plug - it's very simple. My GP2X feels a oddly light without batteries in it, but it works just fine. It cost £14.75.
 
In the U.S., Radio Shack sells an adapter that works great although it is a bit pricey. It is a regulated supply with reversible pin polarity, a variety of jack sizes including the correct one for the GP2X, provides up to 1A and supports 3 to 12V. Just set the switch to 3V and plug in the smallest jack so the center is negative and you're good to go.

I just purchased one and verified that it works. Now I can flash my firmware.
 
Had a difficult time finding an appropriate power supply in Canada (remote rural area).
Ended up with an MW regulated 1700ma. I could not find one with 3.3 volts, though, just 3 volts then 4.5 volts. Works good at 3V, haven't tried 4.5V, yet as Squidge said Reesy did.

However, that brings me to a mod idea for the power main. The tech at the electronics supply let me try his power main. It was the same unit as the one I purchased, but one of the leads had a diode spliced in ( I can post a picture of the diode if anyone wants to see the part number). This cut the voltage on his 4.5 volt setting to 3.5 volts, which worked well with his amature radio/gps equipment.

The tech stated the diode could be spliced into either line. The only catch was the diode was only one way (don't know the correct term for this - polarity sensitive?), and that if you connected it the wrong way it simply wouldn't work. Easy enough to just reverse the diode, no harm done.

I couldn't tell the difference between the 3V unmodded and 3.5 volts modded. The GP2X worked with both.

Anyway, just thought I would share that info :)

It won't matter - the batteries supply 2.4v and then a step-up voltage modulator automatically brings the voltage upto 3.3v
