External Power Supply


Uh... I'm not very clear on this subject but... I have an old GBA (original) power adapter (UK). Since GP2X uses 2 AA batteries, is it possible it would work...? OK, you probably can't just work it out by the batteries, but will an old GBA AC to DC power adapter work? It's just a plug block, with a wire, and it has a metal bit on the end (a short cylinder with a diameter of maybe... 3mm? That's just a guess- haven't uswed it in ages). You have to put a special block into the battery cavity, and then the end of the cable goes into the back. AFAIK, the actual cable itself has the adapter in, not the battery block, though I'll have to try to dig it out and take a look.

Sound good? :s

GBA is typical 300ma or less (as the GBA is only a 16Mhz ARM + unlit LCD) so completely useless. Also, it would be the wrong polarity.

I've found a Digitor brand adaptor that is intended as a power supply for Gameboy devices. It supplies 3V regulated at a maximum of 1.5A. The only thing I'm not sure of is the size of the barrel plug that the GP2X takes and what polarity a Gameboy Pocket expects. I should be receiving my GP2X next week, so I'll know more then.

Any chance that CraigX or another GP2X seller might put suitable adaptors up for sale anytime?

The cheapest I can find that looks almost certain to do the job is this:

Eurobatteries ac-dc adaptor

It'll do 3V at 1000mA, it's regulated, and can be set centre negative. £6.85 + shipping.

If someone with an operation geared up to reselling (such as Craigix) could get hold of them, they could probably make a bit of money, as there's a 20% discount for buying 10.

Okay, thanks Squidge I think I've found a good one now. Regulated (with a 3V setting) and up to 1200mA current.

I have this, it works fine but is much bigger than I was expecting. It also makes a slightly annoying hum when it's on. Perhaps not the best it you plan on taking the powers supply with you somewhere, but decent for use at home.

Just in case anyone sees this when searching for PSU stuff, I thought I'd point out that while this adaptor works perfectly (I got mine in the post today), it doesn't come with the right sized jack for the GP2X. You'll have to either use one from another adaptor, or buy one from somewhere like Maplin. Also, the 'female' part on the cable is rectangular; most are circular so the replacement jack fits quite oddly though it does work fine.

If you're looking for a PSU this one seems decent except for the above. The service: I ordered on Wednesday night and received my parcel Friday morning (with multimeter and most-probably-crappy-but-cheap green generic looking 2500mAh NiMHs.. hurray!)

Slightly off-topic, my Uniross 2500s are reading 2.4v on the multimeter, fresh out of the charger... what's all that about?

I hope that's 2.4v for the pair in parallel!

Rechargeable AA batteries are only rated at 1.2v, not 1.5v as for the non-rechargeable ones, so that's perfectly normal.

From one or two? If you've stuck two 2500's together to get 2.4V, then that's perfectly correct, otherwise it's quite scary :eek:

My mistake, I had the multimeter set to AC :lol:

With it set to DC they're now showing 1.43v each, which to my ignorant eye would appear to be quite healthy?

I sure hope you meant Series :D

Edit: 1.43 is the surface charge, under load and/or once you bleed that off you will see the real voltage.

I've tried using a 500mA transformer, but the vids kept crashing after about 10mins and then the transformer wouldn't work for a while. I poped down Argos and got a 1200mA one which seems to work ok.
 
The GP2X seems to use around 450 - 500ma in "idle" mode, and around 250 - 300ma more when actually doing something. Nobody knows why yet.

In particular, it's been measured that the main menu uses up about 450 - 500ma, but if you press a direction on the joystick, it jumps to around 750 - 800ma until the joystick is released :eek:

Gotta be a firmware bug.
