I'm using WinXP on my laptop, WinXP the main Desktop, Mandrake and Fedora Core on the 2nd and 3rd Desktops. I'd switch to Linux on my Laptop if:

I could get my soundcard, ATI Radeon X600 Videocard, and ATI TVWONDER USB 2.0 working properly.
Knew the Linux Alternatives to the Following Programs:
TMPGenc Xpress(Conversion to mpeg)
TMPGenc DVD-Author(Putting mpeg's into a DVD file stucture)
VirtualDub
DVD decrypter(Copying DVD file structure to harddrive removing copy protection and Region Code in the process)
AutoGK(Converting vob to avi)
AviDemuxer(Converting the audio in a video file[usually ac3 to ogg for DVD-rips])
Nero Burning Rom
BitComet(My prefered Bittorrent Client)
Ultimate Paint(MS Paint easy, but much more powerful)
If I could find a distro that didn't require command line to install software.

I really want to get rid of Windows and be free of Microsoft, but at the moment all I can do with linux is OpenOffice and Firefox.

I could get my soundcard - shouldn't be a problem

ATI Radeon X600 Videocard - drivers from ati.com should do it

and ATI TVWONDER USB 2.0 working properly. - don't know anything about this

- if you look around in the forum you will find some converters

Nero Burning Rom - NeroLinux

BitComet(My prefered Bittorrent Client) - maybe you can use it with wine, but I think bittorent is enough ^^

Ultimate Paint(MS Paint easy, but much more powerful)

- ubuntu (normally), ubuntu.com

I'm currently running Windows because our house only has 1 computer and my parents decide what OS runs on it.

But when I get my own computer I'm going to install Ubuntu Linux.

 :D Win98SE :D

No! Really! :)

Why upgrade when it works? ;)
Define works.
I think he means it does everything (gender unspecified) wants
It does everything I want -- it works for me(tm) :D

With care Win98SE is okay. (Notice! Not *Great* ! <_< No OS is *Great* :| )
But whenever I see an installer throwing stuff in system I hold my breath!

I've used WinXP and I've been disappointed by the lack of apparent speed that a processor upgrade gives. So I ain't going there with this machine.

Linux is too steep a learning curve right now, but it is probably the way I'd go for an upgraded machine

blue screens aren't famous for no reason :p

I used Windows 98 (/SE) many years, many hours a day and believe me, I did everything possible to stop Windows crashing all the time. ;) But, hey maybe it's up to what you do and how often you use it. (I don't think it will crash that often if your most used program is Word)

Personally I loved Windows 98... The only reason I upgraded is because grey was too dull...

Does any of the AmigaOS running people run AmigaOS4?

Nope, OS 3.1
I have 3.9 lying around but haven't bothered to install it since my 3.1 setup works just fine.
Well I have actually just installed v 3.9 of the OS and I am actually typing this on my trusty Amiga!

With the Aweb Browser the forum looks like shite but hey, I can actually look at those forums and use them.
:)

I tried Linux once; I was constantly in dependancy hell.  I hate Linux with a passion, and it serves no purpose when it comes to me.

Windows forever.

It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. I've had dependency problems maybe 3 times in the last five years across several Unix-style OSes.

I'm not "blaming my tools" for it being hard to use; all i'm saying is that I don't like Linux. Besides, I can use Linux, I just said that it was a pain in the ass to get it to do anything. Whether or not you have had dependancy problems is irrelevant anyway, because even if I did, I still wouldn't use Linux, I already said that.

I said that serves no purpose when it comes to me. You know why? Because it doesn't. Linux offers me nothing that I can't already do on Windows. Not only that, but Linux has nearly no game support. I play games more than I do anything else, and something like WINE doesn't do shit to help, especially with games (On their website, they CLAIM that it works with WoW, but I couldn't get it to work with one single thing. Either way, it still offers no advantage over Windows). Unless I wanted to get Win4Lin, I couldn't play any games. It still doesn't do it as well as Windows does it. I also couldn't care less about Linux being open source; I don't feel like changing Linux. I got Windows XP Pro for only five dollars because my mom is going to college to get her master's degree, so price isn't an issue either.

As I said and still say: Windows Forever.

It was an unfair post, and the reason is the one area which Linux is head and toes above windows its installing programs whatever package management type you use. To update my Linux computer I click the nipple and my computer is spanking new, all up to date and lovely. Installation of software is an area which Linux has got right. Is good at getting rid of cruft too. Microsoft will catch up with its trusted computing(not that I trust it :))

Linux the OS is dull(as in easy) and getting duller. Its easy to use, and looks more like windows everyday. Some would say better. With X getting modularised and KDE looking pretty as a picture.

Linux has no game support. It does have a gaming community think GP32 homebrew only better. The reality is though consoles have even better game support. My reality is most games I play are emulated, or open source anyway so It wasn't a draw for me, but it is perhaps the last(only??) advantage of windowsXP over linux. I wouldn't even attempt WOW lol.

I must admit the draw of open-souce is a dubious one, and I never understood the politcs, but I do see the benefits. HEXEN/QUAKE/DUKE3D all being news on this site only made possible by open source. Generally it makes me *feel* safer on my computer knowing I'm being spied on less. It gives me a sence of security.

I do believe that your point that Linux offers you nothing so why switch is a valid point. People could list technical reasons, or make Anti-Microsoft rants, but the reality is linux real seller is its cool/fun. It offers a more satisfying computer experience all around.

Good luck with your mum and her masters mine has just got her english GCSE and I'm so proud ;)

Using only Linux (or any other POSIX like system) may seem odd to people accustomed to Windows because they can only see limitations ('only few comercial games, almost no comercial programs etc'). They don't understand Linux as they look at it from wrong perspective. Once you're deep into software development it's hard *not to use* Linux as it inherits 30 years of tradition from UNIX. After some time, there is no step back.

I guess we just have many developers here :)

I experienced that after installing Windows again after an half year not using it at all and I really got mad with it. Everything was so.. complicated. Really.

For people who want to experience the Amiga-feeling and can't afford a new Amiga with AmigaOS4 I have a little suggestions: AROS (http://www.aros.org/). It runs on PCs and seems to be a very nice clone of the AmigaOS. It developes slowly though because devs are needed.

Windows XP. I'm not too fussy about OS as long as it lets me get on with what I want to do. I won't be upgrading to Vista unless I buy a new computer. Windows is too damn expensive for one thing.

I do not use "Windows" at all. I don't see why I should. I am mostly into desktop publishing. I use Scribus for that. Any typing, email, web surfing, or even photo editing is all done from Linux. Any gaming I do is with handheld, console, or KnoppiXMAME (KnoppiXMAME is mame under Linux). Linux picks my digicam right up. I did use it for my scanner until I found out that it was supported by Linux. :D
