Remember the ninja, the console that was gonna be made by guys from gp32x before the gp2x came out?
Well as there have been no more updates on ninja.gp32x.de i assume the project is dead.
Is this the case?

it's bad news that it's been on hold, but when the componants are not available, there's gonna be a problem knocking up the systems.

main thing is, most of the board desiging was done.

Iirc, the main issue was getting Samsung to supply a small number of chips instead of a 10000-esque quantity. Although I can easily believe getting a factory to make the things might also be an issue.

Not as big a one, though, I imagine, once the components are around - bear in mind GPH managed to book their first batch for as few as 500 consoles (GP2xes, that is), which might be a sensible quantity for the first load of Ninjas. Dunno though. Still got to find the right factory...

Odd that you posted this, I checked the Ninja page yesterday wondering the same exact thing. Mirko was doing a great job at trying to put everything together, unfortunetly I think his project got pushed aside with all the XGP and GPX2 hype. Honestly, I think GP and GPH just decided to jump on the Ninja bandwagon :p , I think Mirko pushed them to create/release the new consoles, we owe it to him :D

Cheers!

You can do low component runs at a fabrication plant etc, but it costs a lot more; making 500 fabs wirth bits soldered on is about the same price as doing a couple thousand, you know? :p

But getting screens could be hard.. Samsung is always out of them :)

Yeah, I was also just thinking about this. And to go along with what TheReaper was saying, wasn't the Ninja announced first?

i doubt that GPH would have felt threatened when the ninja was mentioned. It was vapourware then and still is now. God knows how long the GP2X was in development before it was unveiled to us.

So, with the release and focus on the GP2X, this community based homebrewer's handheld Ninja gadget is confined to the vapour trail?

Seems like a tremendous shame, considering (and I'll admit my ignorance) that it seems Mr. Mirko was the main man developing it and he's been invaluable to the GP32 homebrew community.

Has the GPH GP2X basically burned out a brilliant idea that came from the independent GP32 community?

Or is there still some hope for this lil beastie? It seems to me that a handheld developed by the community for the community has some advantages over a handheld developed by a split company for South Koreans and on the side for the community.

From the polls run on the Ninja project site, looks like it had a lot of positive support as well, although now quite probably everyone will be focussed on the GP2X.

Anyone closely related to the Ninja project can shine some light on the issue? The comments by Mirko on the site certainly appear to indicate that quite some progress was made on the board itself...

Yes, I can.

It is officially on hold until someone is willing to open up a company to produce it :)

I may do this if I earn enough with the gp2x... but I can't imagine this will happen too soon ;)

How about switching the project to an open source home console. And you can have the Project Ninja Home Console at home and the GP2x on the go.

Never really seen the point of anything like that, just use a PC (or an xbox 1 since modded it's pretty open afaik)... but might just be me.

edit: ooo GP32 hardcore... I see my spamming is paying off :p

Yeah, want an alternative home console, get a Phantom. Oh no wait, that's just vapour in a chunky stupid looking box ;)

Seriously tho, this Ninja project showed a lot of potential and I suppose the devs involved and the community around it (judging by the polls there) were pretty serious about it, I guess until the GP2X appeared.

It would be great to see an actual homebrewed handheld though, a truly open source homebrewer's gadget. I just wonder what resources would be needed to make it a reality.

now that's fairly good news ;) shame us 'ukers' have to buy gp2x's from gbax rarther than off you, but perhaps you could get craig involved in this, as he's got a good buisiness head on him and might be able to help ;)
