Quake Already Ported To Gp2x (YES! It's true!)


Afaik the Scaler scales a memory Region, so it can Scale evrything (Sprites/parts of Screen/etc), only-full-Screen is out of question as Squidge talks about scaleing each Line independent.
I wonder if it is usable to (pre)scale textures.
 
since it scales in 90 degree's couldn't you use the second core to calculate any degree inbetween or would that be pointless?

Yes, but that wouldn't gain you much, as the most demanding part is the rendering itself.

Use a sli approach, render one line with first cpu and the second with the second one, etc. This way each cpu has to do only half of the screen ;)

Ok I have no idea if that works with software renderes, but the idea is neat :)
 
Strangely enough, I'd already thought of that approach, but not in the same way you have just described...
 
Congrats on getting Quake up and running. Should be neat.

I thought I read somewhere that Quake 2 has an SDL port. But Quake 2 requires hardware acceleration doesn't it? Is there any reason to think we may see Quake 2 on the Gp2x from what you know or is it going to be a stretch just getting Quake to run well. I assume its too early to tell at this point.
 
i thought there was a software render in quake 2? but mmm if they learn how to use the second core to its full potential! it could well not be so much of a dream lol
 
Q2 has a software renderer, and someone will certainly port it the the gp2x but I don't think anyone can guess how it will run at this stage. I'm guessing it will be like Q1 on the gp32 (ie, jerky but playable). Q1 should run very well on the gp2x once Squidge gets it compiling with a later version of gcc.
 
Doom and Quake are far better than nothing. Perhaps once a well performing version of quake is released for the Gp2x, someone can then maybe modify the code to allow for more enhanced features, like higher poly models. That might not happen though if 3D doesn't "take off" for the system. But at least we will have quake. :)
 
Squidge: Do you think theres any chance of porting mesa to the gp2x and then starting to use the second cpu (gpu) to get some of the basic functions hardware accelerated?
 
Mesa is so slow as to be unusable on my Athlon 64 3000+ so I don’t think it’s going to do much good on the GP2X. Then again – the only apps I’ve run with Mesa are Tux Racer and NeverBall, maybe Quake has such a low polygon count that it will be ok – after all a few of the simple 3d screensavers run at acceptable speeds with Mesa.

As for Q2, I seem to recall it running OK on a Pentium-90 with 16MB ram and software render.

Even with RISC and no floating-point, that sounds like it just might be doable on 2 x 200MHz, 64MB, and QVGA res? Maybe? I can dream? ;)

I'm just wondering if you could get a higher Resolution with Tv-out, just like movies can be played on higher resolution, even at HD res, via tv-out.
 
Quake 2 - Probably...
Quake 3 - Possibly...
Quake 4 - Not a chance in hell, I think.

With Quake 2, there were few advancements in the engine. Just the models, the AI, the textures, sounds and maps changed... the game physics, I'm not sure, and a few of the polygon types.

Quake 3 was (I think) a completely new engine, based on newer hardware acceleration at the time, so I don't think there's a software mode for it.
 
wow that looks flippin sweet (and how come there isnt casing for the gp2x?) oh well good job squidge (port more!!!)
