That`s the "testlevel". There isn`t much more yet, but I think I will release a larger level + jumping enabled next weekend (easter, yeah!).

Tnx for capturing the screen. :)

It looks great. The gameplay is good in my eyes and I cant wait to get any more playable levels :p

Keep up the good work. A scene like this depends on coders like you.

Even in this early tech demo, it looks like if you transfer that over to a full game, it's going to feel VEEEERY much like the original. :) Good work.

One thing I will say is slow the character animation down a little bit. If you're unsure how to do that (I've never used Fenix before though this IS making me want to try!), would doubling up each frame be a solution? Have two frames per one frame sprite if that makes any sense...

The firing animation is perfect. Don't worry about that :)

Also, you have to hold the fire button in to fire. If you just tap it like you could in metal slug, nothing comes out but he begins the firing animation. If it's at all possible, would you be able to get it so that when you tap the fire button, he fires immediately (regardless of animation state?)

However, I feel bad for bringing these up so early. It IS a tech demo after all, and you've done a good job of making it look decent. Looks like you'll be making a lot of Metal Slug fans happy on this board after the disappointment of the previous Metal Slug version being entered into a competition and never showing up.

Keep up the good work!

I made this "hold the button down"shooting cause it always annoyed me in MS that you have to tab the button to shoot. (But I`m going to think of a better solution in the future)
I know, the animation looks to fast, but most of the animation frames are doubled already, and I won`t triple them, the fpgs would get to big. As soon as I come to a better solution, I can make smaller fpgs and better looking animation :)
And don`t feel bad, any suggestion is welcome!

Looks great Quiest! Are you going to take the levels from different MS games? A bit of 3 would be cool :D

Yeah, that`s what I`m planning. I`m planning to remake my favorite levels :D

Don`t get your expectations to high, it`s just a techdemo.

Most exciting news since that old demo thing, thank fook for fenix, good luck.

I hope you don`t think that was me ;)

Oh, and as said in the readme, if anyone wants to join in, I could really need help making those fpgs!

I wouldn't worry about the fast character animation. By the time you add in scrolling, enemies, etc it will probably slow everything down, maybe to the point of being too slow.

You`re a real pessimist  don`t scare me! It will work (I hope)!

All MS games have suffered from some slowdown, so don't worry about it!

That is not strictly true. It was only Metal Slug 2 which suffered from serious slowdown.

I would love to see this game in action. Has this been released yet? I have the Neo Geo AES version of MS1 and can do a direct comparison! :)

Regards,

Looks really good, I never thought Fenix could do such
nice things. Must have been wrong.

One thing though: I think shooting does't react fast
enough, if you push the button really quick, sometimes
the sprite doesn't shoot.

Keep going, looking great!

Serious slowdown yes, but ALL MS games on the Neo Geo slowdown when the screen gets mad busy. I should know, I have 1, X and 3 on the MVS :p

Regards,

Metal Slug 2 was the one suffering most, but all others had slowdowns.
For your second question: No, as you can read, it`s just a tech demo (downloadable at gp32x.de. ;)
And it wouldn`t stand a direct comparison, even if it would be finished yet...

Yeah, as said before, I made this "Hold-The-Button-Down" shooting mode, cause it was easier for me to make (and I hate to smash the buttons :D) but I`m going to do the shooting different (for tapping&holding down possible) in next releases.

Edit: Before anyone mentions it (I wonder why it wasn`t mentioned yet), I also know, that the background is way off scale (too big) but this is going to be original size in next releases, too.

HI!

Good demo at first. Hope it will be finished :)

Some people here in Spain are saying that a METAL SLUG is nearly impossible in Fenix under GP32. Is actually technically possible?

Yours ;)

I don`t know how good the speed on the gp32 will be, when it`s finished, but if you split up the levels (making several fpgs like I`m doing it [level part A->subboss->part B->endboss]) to keep the memory usage down to minimum, then, yeah, I think it`s possible.
Of course you can`t have all features implemented, for example, I don`t think I make rideable vehicles or different graphics for the weapons (I`ll just use the pistol as graphic, to much sprite ripping involved).

Wait till I finish the first level, then we`ll see!

I remember people saying in this thread that the frame rate was fast and that the only way you could slow it down was to lower the frame rate. I wonder what frame rate is it running at now and what would be the next lowest frame rate that you could go? Would that actually effect the playability?

I hope you cant get atleast the minitank as a ridable vehicle I mean that IS the Metal Slug.
