Steam Machine 2026 on sale (pre-order)

I read somewhere he played already for a long time, like 20 hours or so. Restarted the system, than played the 5 minutes and installed the update. But I cannot confirm this from good sources.
And when looking back to the sources I used; the 'official' story, by the original poster is that he didn't play much (5min or so) and installed an update, causing the system to be bricked with the red-light.

Afterwards he posted this:
"Anticlimactic and somewhat embarrassing update: as some people suggested, I left it unplugged for about half an hour last night and then tried plugging it back in... and it didn't work. So I left it unplugged for a couple of hours and then tried it again before bed... and it didn't work. Same error light despite multiple power-cycling attempts. So I left it unplugged overnight and plugged it back in today to try some of the BIOS stuff that other people suggested... and it booted up immediately without issue.
I feel stupid about even posting this now, especially since it blew up a bit, but I was tired and irritable after a long day of work, and an ominous GPU error code wasn't exactly the seamless plug-and-play experience I had hoped for. But I guess if anyone encounters the same error, don't panic like I did, just let it sit for a few hours and it will somehow sort itself out. Anyway, I'm sorry for the false alarm, thanks to everyone who suggested solutions, and now I'm going to spend this weekend playing Crusader Kings until my eyes hurt."

to be clear: i'm going to use my SM primarily for emulation. phase out all playstations.

I'm still waiting for a Pyra...
The Pyra also has a red light to, for charging. If it blinks I think it's not charging or battery is almost empty.
I thought the multicolor lights wouldn't be my thing, but I usually do enjoy the lights though.
Hope you'll receive it soon, it's has been a long time already, and that you can also enjoy the red light experience.

I just received this email from Steam about the Steam Machine pre-order:
Please confirm your purchase information within the next 3 days to finalize your order.

I was a bit late with the controller pre-order, so this is a much faster way to receive the controller :p

The Steam Machine is great for someone not wanting to configure anything, but that's really not the point of it. What is curious is Valve released SteamOS out for regular hardware (AMD GPU still recommended) for free and this was just days prior to the release of the Steam machine, If Valve really cared about max sales of this hardware, they wouldn't have done such a thing. So the point is to get people to switch from Windows, which I'm all for. I primarily just use regular Fedora now, it does just as good, may loose a few FPS, but don't play anything where that matters.

It the Steam Machine is a gaming console, it will replace the traditional platform where there is a hard vendor lock-in.

They just killed themselves (dropping physical game support, etc)
I'm not sure if Sony killed their PlayStation platform by removing the physical drive, they already were selling the non-disc PS5 so I doubt the majority will be bother by it.
For me, I like off-line physical games. Many Xbox games for example are already just licenses on a disc as the content of the disc is immediately superseded by the online content update.
Even the Nintendo Switch 1 sometimes has day-1 patches which are required to have the game operate in a suitable way (due to stability). And the Switch 2 hardly has any games that are actually on the cartridge anymore.
So, all those things tell me that the majority of current console games wouldn't really object to on-line only gaming. Even though selling your used games is a thing, so if Sony allows reselling your digital games it might be nice touch to convince some consumers (that will never happen though).

I think PC's and Laptops might slowly be replaced by phones and tablets. So it only makes sense for the PC market to start merging features (like work, school and gaming applications) to broaden their pool of consumers.
That's probably what Microsoft has spotted ages ago and they probably will flawlessly fail in their execution, as has happened before (having the right idea, but doing it wrong). Like with game-pass, and then increasing the prices so high everyone leaves...
Steam Deck feels like a more moderate attempt at the same thing, small but execute much better. Will it be a hit, I don't think so, but it will be a nice place to jump from to the next bigger thing.

They should be. I've been a fan of PlayStation since the first one - still have them all, but will never get another - without physical media, there's nothing to separate them from any other games service. Proper physical games can be resold, lent to friends and kept and used whenever you like. Ownership counts, but if Sony really don't understand or respect that, then I really don't understand what they think they have left to offer.

True. Shit, and stupid, but true. Again, if people don't start to care, then we'll lose the option of owning any kind of hardware that we truly own (and can install whatever we like on it) - we're all being slowly priced out of the PC market too, if you've been noticing the news on forced price hikes to memory, cpus and even hard-drives...

/rant over, sorry!

Physical copies are good only when there is no need for updates ...
There was a time when games were already complete at launch, or in some cases them needed 1 or 2 little patches ... now at launch most of the games are actually at alpha stage ...

I'm still waiting for that email - hope it won't be so long... I'm also on the Steam controller waiting list, but the estimate on that one when I log in is 2027!

Yeah, they don't make them like they used to.

I've had enough of "AAA" games anyway - indie for the win.

What do you think about Steams recent ranking tweaks? I don't really understand exactly what's happening as I don't use Steam. But discovering games (or digital media in general) is an area that could use some improvement.

If you are speaking about recent versions of the client I can't say nothing because mine is maybe 5 years old.

But to search things I always found easier this:

I'm not familiar with those tweaks. I do like the curated lists more than I expected to find gems more easier.
