What dit you use your Pandora/Pyra today/the last few days

I don't think it's designed to work if you just include it's libs in the path. It's an emulatory kind of shim type thing, so it needs to be the process that runs to intercept your gl calls.

That is how it's setup to work. when you put it's directory in your library path, its libGL.so.1 is loaded and it translates OpenGL into OpenGL ES calls the pyra can process. In the output i can see it loading and see that it's loaded.

using the gl4es option LIBGL_FB=3 i was able to get it running but with no better performance. I also compiled the latest gl4es from github, just to see if it was any better. Here's the output from it running with default options on gl4es, resulting in a blank stream.

LIBGL: Shuting down

Ah, sorry, I was thinking of the box86 source code which I've read. Yeah, gl4es is a library shim, so should work as you say.

I'm not personally that surprised that the game you tested didn't use GL. It seemed to be entirely 2d with overlays. Maybe GL calls could be useful for backing up data behind overlays, I couldn't say, but that's about the only need I could imagine for it.

Isn't it just a h264 video stream?
In that case it shouldn't matter whether the content is in 3D or not
If that's the case, it likely the issue, there is no hardware decoding working at the moment, I have smplayer configured for 4 threads and I brute force it with CPU power.

Yeah, I think that's what it's doing. I was hoping shimming it might take a bit of the load off cpu.

I got my pyra earlier in the year and I set it aside planning to get back to it but had a busy summer doing other things. My laptop recently died so decided to see how well the pyra would work as a replacement. I use the laptop at home or when traveling but use a desktop at work. Its going well, with no intetions of buying a new laptop for now.

I installed i3 windows manager (my preferred interface) and a few other apps and spent some time customizing it. I was tempted to also install xfce desktop for some gui utilities I am used to but decided to just use the mate equivalents. I can do everything I typically would do from the laptop--mutt for email, ranger file manager, moc music, feh photos, mpv movies, firefox & chromium web, and ssh & remmina server administration. The keyboard navigation in i3 mitigates my frustration with the dead perimeter on the touchscreen. VPN working good. The only big thing missing is disk encryption. I will either encrypt just the /home/user folder on the emmc or play around with getting fde working on an os install to one of the sdcards.

And the number of games/emulators in the repository has grown over the summer so I am starting to actually use the pyra as a game console too.

I am now super happy with the pyra!

Yeah, I think that's what it's doing. I was hoping shimming it might take a bit of the load off cpu.
Using LIBGL_FB=3 will make each frame beeing copied from an off-screen back-buffer to the display... That parameter should not be required on the Pyra (and it should be avoided as it's the slowest).

Hi all,

Unfortunately I'm not doing much these days with either the Pandora or the Pyra :(

My plan is to resume work on my Pandora ports at some point:

I'd like to automate things as much as possible with Ansible and commit my roles and playbooks to Github / Gitlab.

At first I thought it would be easy to port my few packages to the Pyra, but I have yet to understand how to do so correctly...

Cheers, Magic Sam

All sorts of stuff since I got my Pyra.

•Emulated Dreamcast for the first time ever, and played Sonic Adventure 2.

•Got the Raspberry Pi version of Pico8 (“_dyn” executable) running and played a few games. (The I and II keys are mapped as action buttons on Pico8 by default.) The Pyra is a very nice Pico8 machine!

•I got it working on the Tello network (US MVNO on T-Mobile’s network) a few days ago for data and SMS, and might do a write-up later on it.

•I got Joplin’s (markdown notetaking application) terminal client up and running with working sync and encryption using Dropbox. (I normally use the desktop version on other machines, but it’s dependencies aren’t available on armhf.)

•Got Resilio Sync running. (I’d like to sync a folder on a SD card, but couldn’t figure out how yet.)

•Got my preferred menu on MATE mapped to the Pyra button, and played around with xfce on it as well.

•Got my Pyra’s info on http://linux-hardware.org/

•Installed the Pyra image on a SD card for testing, and ran out of space trying to update it to the next Debian version.

If I manage to compile something interesting, I’d love to try releasing it as a DBP for the rest of the community to use. But I’m not really sure how.

Sounds pretty cool, would you be willing to make a video of some of this?

Aw man, what a shame, didn't tested yet but joplin is a must for me. Hope someone makes a DBP at some point.

I'm very glad people is happy with their Pyra. I only use it for eventual browsing, email, and watching series while on bed.

Games and emulators I'm interested in aren't ported yet. Maybe, reicast but most games I tested didn't run or had severe graphical bugs (even comparing to the official compatibility list). GPD win is still my gaming device until Pyra software improves.

That said I enjoy using it. I like the screen, much more comfortable than GPD or actual phones (when I'm in the dark I found those too bright to be comfortable). I absolutely love the backlight keyboard. And the keyboard shortcuts and integration with the OS is joy compared to the GPD win.

Joplin is a notebook application similar to Evernote or OneNote, but it’s cross-platform, free, and allows you to sync your notes using multiple different clouds storage options. It’s possible to get the Desktop application running on 64-bit ARM devices like the Pinebook Pro if you look around hard enough, but I didn’t count on being unable to compile it on 32-bit. It’s typically distributed in .appimage format, which I’ve struggled to run on box86, but maybe a newer version will do the trick.

With all that said, the terminal version isn’t *too* bad once you get it running and configured properly. While editing notes, you can tell it which text editor to use, so you can pick one that you’re comfortable with.

As for making videos, I’d love to, but my personal life is so hectic right now that I can’t picture doing it. But I want to give back to the community so I’ll do what I can.

box86 (and box64) is not yet compatible with appimage / flatpacks.
Needs libfuse wrapping, and my last attempts wasn't succefull. I neeed to ahev a new look at why it failled later, as this would opens some new use.

That would be fantastic when it works, and with Box64 on the Pinebook Pro as well. I’ve tried extracting appimages before, but typically I get stuck with it wanting some lib file. The majority of non-ARM Linux software I hope to run winds up in appimage format these days, with little to no compilation instructions that I’m able to understand.

Well what do you know, there´s an ARM port of Joplin Desktop after all. It´s unofficial, but the appimage started right up on my Pyra. https://github.com/MichaelDavidHarry/joplin-armv7l

Just got my pyra, so lots of stuff.

Tried updating to Bullseye, which worked mostly well. Can't seem to use underscores, but I'm not sure I actually tried that before upgrading...

I logged into a linux box via serial connection for the first time, which was helpful when I later tried to install a newer kernel which resulted in no screen. I'm not sure if there is some sort of uboot menu built into the pyra that I could have used, but a serial connection and removing the kernel package did the trick!

It works, I think there is a configuration packages on the pyra debian repo that handle that, and also other things like the dbp system, volume control and anything unique to the pyra...

There is a uboot menu that pops up quickly that allows you to select kernel version on the serial device, you have to be real quick to catch it.
