Super Mario Bros on C64

This sounds incredibly stupid, even if true. Not sure if this includes non-profit-fan-projects.
I'm fairly certain it's true, because it was made quite a bit of noise when King tried to register Candy (as in Candy Crush) as a trademark.

The coder here spent 7 years into that project, impressive, can't even imagine how, first Super Mario is not that big or complex game, maybe he just had Weekends? Anyways, people should know Nintendo now and should avoid such projects if they don#t want to se their hard work shredded to pieces. But they have alot of other Options, how about Sonic and other SEGA games for C64? Would be an idea. :)
To be honest, I often think about why people do unofficial ports/remakes (hell, I even spent some time on several Last Ninja remakes), but if the owner wants to shut you down, they can. That's pretty much why I ditched my latest JANE engine. But I think of the people who make these crazy remakes and think "What if they actually made something new?", they could probably make some great games. Don't get me wrong, ZeroPaige probably wouldn't have been noticed if he made an amazing C64 platformer with some random characters, but make it Mario and people pay attention.

Not really relevant here: this was a copyright claim, not trademark. You don't need to defend copyrights unless you want to.
True. I just mentioned it as I was going on about why people defend their IP, even on things that are old

Tbh, if this was me and there was a very good chance (and this is Ninty; there bloody well is) that I'd get shut down then I'd publicly release the source as well as the binaries. That way I can continue to develop and leak new versions anonymously and no bugger could prove it :)

If they've closing this down for copyright infringment, that can only mean the graphics and maybe the music. That makes me concerned about a certain portal-inspired game that's on my Pandora (naming no names, just to be cautious), but nobody's going to mistake that for the NES original, and there's pretty much no way it can eat into sales on other Nintendo platforms.

To my recollection, the worst case of this I can remember is the way Sega treated the SoR remake. They did it all out in the open on their website, and it was only once they made release Sega turned round and shut them down. At least in that case though, the engine is still publicly available, and the assets can be found if you know how to yaharr properly.

I hope my Pyra doesn't burn up when trying to run this game with frameskip 8 just to be playable @10fps.

But.. there`s no money changing hands this time... on a 30yr old system.

Money isn't the point here.

Back in the 80s, Nintendo saw a company making a game that was a horizontal scrolling platformer collecting stuff and jumping on other stuff to kill it, while collecting a certain power up which made things easier which could be progressed once further for the most powerful in-game character. Nowhere did it mention Mario, Brothers or use any of Nintendo's IP - it just felt very similar to play. They came down hard on it.

And we're surprised that they came down on a game that uses their IP pretty much exclusively?

I certainly hope so for you. If the Pyra can't sustain emulation of a 2Mhz* machine... then we have a big problem. Maybe you can plug in a cartridge into the Pyra with http://supercpu.cbm8bit.com/ ?

But.. there`s no money changing hands this time... on a 30yr old system.
And THAT is the problem, that money should be changing hands... into big N's hands, that is.

*Yeah, 1Mhz, but disable video output and you get almost the performance of 2Mhz. Some compressors/decompressors like Cruel Cruncher did this to get more oompf while compressing a program.

Addendum for @Xcl4m4t10n
Somebody did this already! Wow!

My last answer on this topic was a big sarcastic joke, in case you didn't notice.

The video was uploaded long ago and I was already up to date about this project but thank you anyway!

You missed off the smiley ;) I was a little confused about your last post as well.

For anyone else who thought he was serious, don't forget the pyra's CPU is designed to be more efficient than the Pandora's one. If the Pandora can do something without overheating, the Pyra should be more easily able to do that.

But that's totally incomparable! In the 80 SMB was a hot thing and a commodore 64 was a popular platform with millions units in the wild. Now it's just a curiosity for a bunch of maniacs that fiddle with devices not in production for over 25 years.
And speaking of Giana Sisters - You'll never know for sure without trying, bit had it been made by a big studio it could probably go away wining in court as International Karate did although being vastly inspired by Karate Champ. But they decided it's not worthy the lengthy and probably costly trial.

And we're surprised that they came down on a game that uses their IP pretty much exclusively?
I'm not surprised knowing Nintendo's past records, I just think they are simply acting mean and hurting their image. They probably spent more resources and effort on blocking the port than they could possibly loss in potential sales.

Of course they are. That's what they do. What makes me chuckle is that people think "you know, SMB was a really great game, I'll port that to <old, commercially dead platform>" and then the whole community goes nuts when Nintendo say "Nah bruh, you not do that" like they have every single time this has been done in the past. What's really surprising is that people also start shouting that Nintendo are hurting their image and being total knob-ends, which implies that they would be more successful if they didn't engage in this behaviour.

I don't see Nintendo being hurt by this at all. I really don't.

as International Karate did although being vastly inspired by Karate Champ
like.. how to NOT make a karate game? Here's a video

ps: I agree on being first and an inspiration for the others... but it was an awful game.

Back in the 80s Nintendo _was_ a company making a game that was a horizontal scrolling platformer…

Indeed, and when someone else made a game similar to those mechanics (but using absolutely none of Nintendo's IP) they came down hard on it.

I think what comradekingu means is that they are no longer making such platformer...
That said, they are still making Mario games...

So, i don't think they are comparable in the sense of legal status. Gianna was a competing rip-off effectively, but MarioC64 is using copyrighted materials.

And this difference is i guess why there now exists a "modern" Gianna Sisters game.

That Pets Rescue looks quite interesting, and very Mario-like (also feels a hint of sonic with freeing animals)... Kind if what i was saying about these devs making something similar enough, but also fresh enough

Last I looked, Nintendo still is a company making a 2D scrolling platformer. But anyway.

I would probably have killed for a copy of Giana on the Speccy, but unfortunately Ninty pulled their douche routine before it could be released.

To be fair, i have no idea what Nintendo are working on, i just figured all their new stuff was 3d based.
Super Mario Galaxy was the last Nintendo title i played, or arguably Wii Fit lol.
One game i sorely miss playing, and would like a pc-based port/clone is Mario Strikers: Charged Football... But I'm totally digressing now

The Mario Stikers games are Gamecube and Wii as far as I know, which are in some ways best played on a PC using an emulator.

In terms of the Mario 2D scrollers, they are kind of 2.5D these days, with 3d rendered characters in a 2d play area. Although to be honest, I can only assume they're still making those New Super Mario games still on Switch, I don't actually recall anyone reviewing one of them.
