History Of Wonderboy

The original Wonderboy and Adventure Island were the same, but Wonderboy was on Sega machines, so when it came for a port to Nintendo machiens, SEGA caimed they had a right to the name

SO they changed the name of the first game, but from then on the games remained seperate franchises with seperate games

First, there was Wonderboy (originally an Arcade game), followed by Wonderboy Deluxe (new levels)
This game has a clone (with different graphics and level) named Adventure Island on the NES.

Then we have
Super Wonderboy in Monsterland (Arcade game, more like an Action RPG)
Wonderboy 3: Monster Lair (also called Monsterworld 1) (Arcade and Genesis game, pure action game) AND
Wonderboy 3: Dragon's Trap (SMS and PC-Engine Console game, even more like an Action RPG)
Wonderboy 4: Monsterworld 2 (don't know what system it's for... I THINK SMS)
Wonderboy 5: Monsterworld 3 (Genesis)
Wonderboy 6: Monsterworld 4 (Genesis, now Wonderboy's Girlfriend is the main character)

Wonderboy 4 was for Megadrive and was actually a shooter!
I was sooo dissappointet, I sold my NES for a Mega Drive and the jap. Version of this game, but they redeemed themselves with the genius Wonderboy 5, the game with the best Ending Ever on a 16 bit machine, at least for me.

I think you mean the port of the Wonderboy 3 Arcade game:

Just googled for a few more infos on Wonderboy... seems like a bit of a mess ;)

I have been right with most of the stuff:

1. Wonderboy, Wonderboy Deluxe (Arcade, ported to a lot of systems)
2. Wonderboy in Monsterland (Arcade, also ported to a lot of systems)
3. Wonderboy 3: Dragon's Trap (SMS / PCEngine), called Wonderboy: Monsterworld 2 on GG (Oh boy...)
3. Wonderboy 3: Monster Lair (Genesis / Arcade)
4. Wonderboy in Monsterworld (Genesis / SMS)
5. Monsterworld IV

More info about the confusing names:

EAST/WEST:

A really confusing subject with the Wonder Boy games, is all the different names. Why did the western versions get released with different names than the original Japanese versions? This doesn't count for the arcade games, which was called the same both in the east and the west. But the Japanese SMS version of Wonder Boy 1 is actually called Super Wonder Boy, and nr. 2 is called Super Wonder Boy in Monster World. I know those names sound pretty stupid, but it was a bad idea to change the names when they got released in the west. That only creates confusion, for example take Wonder Boy 3.... There are two games with that name, the arcade game Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair, and the western Sega Master System game Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap. But this would not be a problem if the west had kept the original Japanese title Monster World 2: The Dragon's Trap. Then it would not be known as Wonder Boy 3, but more as the sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land. It seems to me that the guys who changed the title didn't know what they were doing at all. On the other hand, it was very stupid that the Japanese releases didn't keep the "Wonder Boy" title. Westone kinda lost their "mascot" that way.

Another crappy thing about the western releases, is that the translation is so utterly horrible in some of the games, such as in the arcade game Wonder Boy in Monster Land. It is obvious that it was a Japanese with little english knowledge who translated it.

WONDER BOY IV:

Wonder Boy IV, the sequel to Wonder Boy 5 Monster World III (or the european Wonder Boy in Monster World) was not released in the west. But still I see many places where it's called Wonder Boy 6 Monster World IV, and that is correct! It might have been called that IF it was released in the west, but it wasn't, so stop calling it WB 6! It is called Monster World IV. Remember that!

The most important thing to remember is that 'Wonderboy 3: The dragons trap' on the SMS and PCE is one of the best games ever made.

Ever.
