I'm sorry, but this just puts the DS to shame. Look at the screen on that thing.. I am in love.

**Starts saving for PSP**

EDIT: Where's the promised joystick?
There are debates over whether the circular thing under the joypad is actually a recessed joystick.

I would say that the Dpad is most likely analogue just like in the PS2 controllers anyway.

It looks nice and all but RIP Nintendo this is definitely not. If anything I am a Sony fanboy but the DS is going to be much cheaper. Although the PSP approaches the PS2 in terms of graphics, the DS previews show that graphics just a little higher than N64 quality do the job just as well. Not to mention, built-in wireless (PSP supposedly doesn't include it ... and like multitaps, nobody is gonna buy the add-on) and stylus/touchscreen. The second screen seems to be being used exclusively for maps at the moment, which sucks. But applications of the style include graphical chatting and a Pacman game where you draw Pacman and move him by drawing lines. Depending on your power, you can draw one giant Pacman or a horde of tiny ones. Even Shigeru Miyamoto admitted he was jealous of the idea!

Both handhelds are going to have different target markets, anyways. We'll see how well they co-exist early next year...

The PSP *will* have wireless connectivity built in.. The DS does look interesting but the device looks cheap and nasty. I hope they revise the design (i have heard that the images aren't of the final design *phew*)

I suggest doing a search and find the EA PSP demo reel. If the graphics even remotely approach those in the video, I think the PSP could easily handle anything already running on the PS2. There is another video that shows Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear and other games. Each of these look totally amazing. Not just for a handheld. The PSP to me puts an end to (or at least minimises) the compromise handheld gamers have had to put up with for so long.

GO the PSP about time nintendo get thrashed for making the shite GB pocket, GBC and GBA <_< which I all owned and wished for a much better handheld.

a few things turn me off. Size for one, battery power for another, and the whole "damn that screen could get scratched as hell" factor. It does look real slick, i must say... I think i will still def buy one.

You can buy an added battery. Thats probably 2.5 hours for the most cpu intensive stuff.

woah where did it ever say that the battery life would be 2.5 hours? Sony is an electronics company, if the DS can manage 8 hours with two backlit screens plus it's dual processors, I'm sure sony can manage 8 hours too :)

THey said 2.5-10 and the DS doesn't compare in graphics power so it takes less power to run.

Actually i have to admit that i like DS design. It is so oldschool and reminds me those old two screens game&watch games :) PSP looks very cool in its own way (link ;) but it surely will be much more expensive from DS (estimated price for Nintendo DS is around 120$). And why it is so big ? From the other side playing Grand Turismo outdoor is something I haven't even dreamt about :) (link)

As for PSP's battery life:
One of the most crucial statistics, of course, is the battery life - and in this area Sony expects the PSP to last for 10 hours of music playback (which is better than most MP3 players), eight hours of gameplay and two hours of movie playback from the UMD. The game statistic is a little optimistic though - it assumes minimal access of the UMD disc during playtime, which means that on advanced games which stream data, the battery life will be shorter.
DS has give ability to play only 2 hours more (around 10 hours of gameplay) so it is only 2 hours more difference. No t to much to make a fuss :)

Having a PS2 and a PSP will be discouraging, IMO, as they will have similar graphics and eventually similar games. So the PSP would basically ruin my "appetite" for PS2 gaming. While on the other hand, I don't have a GC, so the DS would be perfect.

EDIT: Thanks for the clarification and pic, hando! But still, only 2 hours for movie playback! What the hell is that! As for the DS, it looks a lot better in that pic. But where are the speakers?

Impressive looking except for the dpad. I disliked the PS1/2 movement part of the dpad as well mind (made for awkward Street Fighter 2 combo's - or maybe I'm just crap :D). I better start saving for one now then I suppose.
