Zodiac Now Has A Playstation Emulator

FF7's contradictions were the fault of bad translation, if there were ever to release a corrected version the sory would be a lot easier to understand, but at least it had a story people wanted to understand. 8 just kinda lead you around by the nose and honestly it coulda stood to kill a few people to make IT memorable. I can hardly even remember half the cast. :p

come on, it was cool how julia met laguna at the beginning etc, whereas with FF7, all you got was hojo telling cloud he wasn't real, then the actual fact is that he is real, then he isn't, then he is....

It's called mind-games, a viable plot element in any video game. The inner story to FF VII was so much better than FF 8; not the whole "We must stop the meteor!!1", but the brooding development inside ShinRa, the rebellion of Cloud and others, the release of the Weapons, Jenova and its relation to Sephiroth, Hojo and Cloud, Hojo and Sephiroth, Zack; the list goes on and on.

And all the characters had such intricate backgrounds (except maybe Aeris), that each one of them could've had their own game, especially Vincent and Sid. The entire Corel Town story tugged at my heart just as much as the death of Aeris did, and the inner conflicts with EVERY ONE of the characters gave them more personality in their pinkies than Squall had in his whole body.

Yeah, the reason FF7's graphics look kiddy is because it was Square's first attempt at a 3D game. Indeed we all loved the first FF games which had characters like the black mage with his nice hat?

FF7's story was deep, each character has it's own background (yeah, except Aeris), and it involved many things.

FF8 was pretty good IMO, had a nice story and character development, realistic gfx, but still found FF7's story more interesting. :)

FF9 is a kiddie version of FF7 imo, a rat tailed guy connected to a sephiroth like guy? A cute kid with a stray hat? A fat, bizarre queen, and a girl that runs around flapping her arms? No deep or interesting plot changes appear here, the story is kinda weak. I like it, but...

Yes, this update is a big one! I told ya good things were to come with PPSX. Just didn't realize it'd be this soon.
I finally got HLE working. What that means is, NO MORE NEED FOR A BIOS, and...A GREAT SPEED BOOST! I'm able to play Final Fantasy Tactics now. The complex scenes are a bit slow, about 50% to 75% speed, but most are more playable with good speed, at times even full speed. Movies are also much smoother playing now. And even better, this version supports saving to the memory card! All WITHOUT overclocking the Zodiac!

For memory card saving:
If Mcd001.mcr or Mcd002.mcr are not inside /PALM/PROGRAMS/PPSX when it comes time to save, PPSX will automatically create the file and save to it. So no need for me to distribute it with PPSX. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Memory card saving hasn't been tested on my end yet, so let me know how it goes.

HLE gives a good speed boost, but will change compatibility considerably. Not sure for the better or for worse, but Buster Bros Collection no longer works for me, and Tactics Ogre works now. So I'll investigate the bugs in the HLE code and raise the compatibility back up, and even higher than before. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Oh and a graphics glitch that causes frames to go in and out between whats expected and a screen full of garbage, has been fixed. This same bug causes the "black screen of death" where nothing but a black screen is displayed yet the game still responds to START+L+R and power off (meaning not crashed).

Download PPSX v0.60 at:
http://www.friggingames.com/ppsx.prc

I'm going to start archiving the releases so people can go back to an older version if needed. Sound like a good idea?

If you would like to help me track down these HLE bugs, I highly suggest going to the PPSX Compatibility thread and posting your results with this and future releases!

Well I'm off to get a game of FF Tactics in. The game looks awesome on the Zodiac!
Hope you don't mind this release coming so soon after the previous one, but this is a required update imho. Let the testing begin!

YAY PSX ON THE ZOD! YAY!

this chap is going to get a gpx2 too :)

FF7 rule. FF8 does too IMO. FF8 is the first ff on the psx I played (generally, FF5 emulated was my first FF)

One winged angel rules. :p
The black mages rule even more, gotta love FF6 Dancing Mad version by them.

Oh yeah, FF7 has almost no moogles (In a summoning with chocobo, I remember), and bright colors? In some pieces, but not over the whole game, generally it's pretty dark.

FF9 was kiddie, that's true. Cute and happy story, no real dramatic and heavvy stuff.
I'd say FF9 was the scariest of the lot.
I generally think that FF8 has a much better storyline than FF7.

FF9 was scary to you? Why's that?

For me, FF7 was really good. I loved it, but the first time I played thru it I used a strategy guide. And my brother had "first dibs" on playing it... so we both played it at the same time, and being the dumbass that he is and unable to multitask, or pause the damn game, he decided to have me read the strategy guide and tell him what to do... So basically, I'd read ahead, then tell him what to do, then watch it, then go and do it again cuz I couldn't remember exactly what to do in my own game... he was further into the game than I was by a pretty big amount... So yeah, I still loved it, but it was kind of ruined for me. I played it again later when I was older, understood and appreciated it MUCH more, but I still like 9 better. I thought 9's humor was more... I dunno, I guess easier to understand, and it was overall more lighthearted. The bad stuff that happened was actually kind of worse, now that I think of it... a lot of civilizations were destroyed, and stuff... but the game never seemed that dark to me. I dunno... I did pretty much the same thing with 8 that I did with 7 until I lost interest in it completely. I hated how the enemies leveled up, and you had a limited source of magic. That was a pain in the ass. None of the characters really stood out to me either. So yeah... FF9 is my favorite, followed by FF7. FF8 isn't even on the radar. But it did have some good music... as far as the music is concerned, for FF7, one winged angel is very good, but I prefer Rufus's Welcoming Ceremony and Opressed People(wall market music). For 9, There are only a few tracks I don't like. I'd have to say my favorite would be... You are Not Alone! The Airship, Hildagaldy is really good too... and so is Gurugu Volcano... But overall, I would have to say my favorite music track ever is Time Circuits from Chrono Trigger.

No, FF7 wasn't Squaresoft's first attempt at a 3D game. The first game they released for the PSX as far as I know, or at least one that came out about a year before FF7(US release anyway, so unless one got delayed, it was first...) was a fighting game called Tobal No. 1. The characters are really blocky, and the movement is a bit slow, but it's a lot of fun. And Tobal 2 is a huge improvement. let's see... FF7 came out in 1997, right? Tobal No. 1 came out in 1996. In fact, now that I remember... There is a perfect way of proving that Tobal No. 1 was first... because packaged along with Tobal was the FF7 demo disc. I can take pictures to prove it if you don't believe me for some reason... http://www.ncsx.com/2004/ncs083004/tobal.htm There's some more info about the game.

but yeah, anyway, I wouldn't say the FF7 graphics are kiddy... Just... I dunno, fuckin weird... but I like them that way. If they ever decide to remake FF7, they should keep the graphics(at least the way the characters look when in the "field") the same.

By the way, Goity... how did FF7 change its story every 5 seconds, and how the hell did it contradict itself? You're what, like 13 or 14 right now? You were probably a lot younger when you first played it... It came out 8 years ago, and I played it as soon as it was available. So I played it 8 years ago... I would have been 11. I had a lot of trouble understanding it completely until about 2 or 3 years ago when I played it again. Now I'm never one to say that younger people are stupid simply because they're younger, but it is definitely a fact that because of lack of certain experiences, it's more difficult for younger people to understand certain things and make certain connections. So if you had trouble understanding FF7, I suggest you play it again and pay attention to it the best you can because it's not confusing at all, really.

Final Fantasy 7 wasn't memorable because Aeris died in it. It was memorable because it was a good story. When FF8 was made, they started making all kinds of weird changes to the series that just made everything more complicated and frustrating. And for the record, I was HAPPY when Aeris died... I friggin' HATED her.

He might be refering to Cloud's memory difficulties, one minute he's a part of Soldier the next he's just a grunt, then he's a clone, then he's not, then he starts telling people again that he was part of soldier (but I believe that was more of a moral booster concidering their circomstances). It was a little confusing the first time you go through the story but youstart to understand it better the more you think back on it.

True, FF7 wasn't square's first released 3D game, but it was the first big title they started working on. The tech demos they showed were assumed to be for the N64 at first because no one knew they'd decided to go with sony yet. Those demos were based off of the graphics for FF6 which accounts for the super deformed nature. They were trying to stick to that as much as possible because it was traditional for the most part to not over detail the characters in an RPG.

Okay seriously all that comment is going to do is start a screaming match dude, if you can't think up a better comeback than that you should really just stop talking now.

What the heck?

Looks like you guys will only be playing ONE game (or maybe two) if this PS emulator ever becomes a reality!

Supposedly there are more than just a couple of 2D games. I just suspect there arnt many people with a full range ot PSX games to test. If we did get one for the 2X the first game I'd probably try is Gunner's Heaven.

i've got access to a very big collection of psx games, mainly 2d japanese shooters and platformers. So if or when zodttd ports this over, i'll have the .bin/.iso files ready to test these babies.

This sounds very very promising considering the emulator has got this far on the zod after only a couple of weeks.

He seems an amazingly tallented and attentive programmer and will be a huge asset to our community.

iam amazed to hear that it runs playable on z, i would never have imagined it to be faster than ~15 fps on a 200mhz machine.

The way I put it one time in a FF comic I drew:

"You sword fighters and your huge swords, always sticking them in things, trying to compensate!" Strangely enough Cloud and his "big sword" was the only one to actually get laid albeit off camera but you know it happened.

Also, I think playable means different things to different people. I can't help but think there are things missing in these games that we arnt being told about.

Huh? What? Cloud and his sword got laid? You mean, commited in a sexual act? Who with? Was it a.. "What happened next.." on the Cloud and Barret date scene?
P.S. Wow, a PlayStation emulator for the Zodiac.. too bad I don't have one. I have a Pocket PC in which I tried getting a PS emulator on it.. but the Media Card could not hold the amount of data needed to store an ISO. If he DID port it, would it be for the 3D thing, or the 2D thing? (The two consoles that GamePark are going to release..)

hahaha, it was the scene before the final battle under the airship. If you payattention to the context of the scene with Cloud and Tifa sitting by the rock, they're talking about how they shouldnt have any regrets and as they move the camera away they lean in towards each other and..... in the next scene it's suggested that they were spotted gettin' busy.

A port would more than likely be fore the GP2X and not the XGP (atleast not right now) as no one's really even started talking about the XGP and the hardware might not even be final on that at all yet.
