Xgp... Revealed In December?

i still dont care, i will be happy with my gp2x, i wont have pe...err i mean handheld envy. lol GP enis :D

as good as the psp is at what it does, i'd never recommend it for homebrew thanks to the utterly shite d-pad :p

"omg, the d-pad is exactly the same as Nintendo's except that it's broken up on the top, which makes absolutely no difference because you can still hit all 4 directions with your thumb in the center resting on all 4 of them where there would normally be a center connecting those 4 directions, but the D-pad sucks."

Seriously... what is with everybody's problem with Sony's D-Pad? Judging by the fact that at least 95% of the people here are hypocritical Nintendo Fanboys, thus making this a logic-free zone, I'd have to guess that this is a result of that exact circumstance. The damn thing is exactly the same as Nintendo's D-Pad, which has worked and continues to work just fine for Tecmo Super Bowl and any other NES game I've played over the past 16 years.

Oh the irony. Saying they are hypocritical and then saying they are "logic free" because they like Nintendo?

Um, the PSP dpad IS different from the Nintendo dpads so it is completely understandable that some people might not like it as much or even like it better and it might even be reasonable to say that it isn't as useful for some games though I can't say anything about that.

No, I'm saying they're logic free because they like Nintendo without reason. Everything Nintendo does is considered perfect and awesome. Any time anybody says anything negative about Nintendo, at least 4 of them flock to that thead and flame the hell out of whoever said it. They give no reason for liking the things they like in most cases, and the same is true about the things they don't like. They try post a response to my questions and opinions with witty remarks but always fail miserably. They argue by telling people to shut up when a point has been brought up that they can't counter. And one of them apparently thinks that Chrono Trigger was made by Nintendo, despite the fact that the fuckin box says "Squaresoft" all over it. They also tend to lable me a Sony fanboy despite the fact that I was defending both Microsoft and Sony for being held to the same double standard when comparing both companies to Nintendo... Someone was complaining about Microsoft and Sony's consoles being able to play discs other than those that are commercial games, as if it's a good thing for a company to go out of its way to make something that you'd expect that company's product to do impossible to do. And let's not forget that the same person also suggested that Gamepark should be among the only companies to be allowed to make gaming systems, which is a bit stupid, considering he was just complaining that the PS2 and X-Box can play music and movies in addition to the games made for them... which is exactly what the GP32 can do as well... I'm not gonna lie and say that I don't prefer Sony over Microsoft and Nintendo, but I am by no means a fanboy. I don't have enough money to buy all 3 systems, and Sony simply has had more of the games I wanted over the past 10 years. I haven't liked Nintendo since they made the N64, and that was long before I ever even considered buying a Playstation. I used to think that requiring a memory card to save your games was retarded until I understood why the card was required.

And to OrR...

Please tell me exactly how the 2 D-pads are different. I already mentioned the only difference... the fact that the part you can see is "separated" on Sony's controllers. That's the only difference. Underneath, they're both connected. They're both set up the exact same way on the inside. They both have the same kind of button membranes. They both can go in 8 different directions with the same exact ease. Oh wait, apparently I've forgotten a difference: the fact that the Nintendo D-pad has the arrows carved into it. That's it... they both work in the exact same way, and neither one is better than the other. I've played extensively with both D-pads, and I've seen the inside of several controllers from both companies. There's no real difference in how they work. In all seriousness, I've never gotten pain from playing with any controller EVER... and to give you a good idea how much time I usually spend playing videogames... For those of you who are familiar with Final Fantasy 9, I'm about an hour from getting to the 4th disc, and I only started playing 4 days ago. By the way, just in case anybody's confused, I'm referring to the D-Pad found on the NES, Gameboy(original/pocket/color/advance), SNES, N64, and Gamecube. I don't like the one on the DS or the GBA SP... but I don't like ANY of the buttons on either system... They're too small and don't stick out enough. It's not a big deal, and it's not like I couldn't get used to it... but I'm used to pushing the buttons in farther and harder, and I don't like the change.

Ok, here comes CodeNinja's another translation service. Whether to trust it or not is your problem, since I'm just providing free translation service.

GP is working on updating XGP. They're testing GP2x/PSP/GBA type shell design instead of Gameboy SP-ish foldable shell design. They've been working on both styles, but foldable design will cost more to manufacture, hence less likely to be the final design.

The final design will be announced in December. Hardware specs won't change too much from already known one.

@Magnus86: I am the furthest thing from a nintendo fanboy... but the Sony PSP D-pad sucks and for the one reason alone that you can't hit diagonals accurately. Try playing wings of fury on UAE and you can't even take off from the carrier. besides that I am pretty happy with my PSP and just use the analogue stick for games that require accurate diagonals.

Oh and by the way I am a 28 year old and my thumb isnt big enough to just sit in the middle of the direction pad and just squish accross in any direction... You must have one fat thumb dude.

You answered your own question there.

I'm not supposed to say this... but I'll say it anyway.

XGP is being redesigned from ground up at the moment, including the unit design itself. They are commissioning a professional designer to do the job, hopefully, right.
Also they're looking at 128 meg ram with 640X480 rez backlit screen to satisfy euro devs and users.

That's all I'm saying folks. Hopefully they won't notice me saying this.

Cheers.

Thanks! If they do it then the XGP would be what the GP32 was back at its launch a commericially oriented very powerful machine which will hopefully have tons of nice homebrew because of its power. Great!

Uh... the space between the 4 directions is like 3mm. How can you possibly not have a thumb big enough to do that?

As you can see, there is a picture of me holding a PSX controller with my left hand showing where my thumb rests... And judging by the pictures I've seen of the PSP, the D-pad is exactly the same as the PSX/PS2 controller's D-pad... but that's irrelavent cuz I've heard people complain about both. The gap between 2 directions that form a diagonal is even smaller than the gap between 2 buttons on opposite "poles," so I still don't see how you can't hit the diagonals.

Okay, OrR, yes... Technically I have answered my own question as to how they're different... but you see, what I've come up with makes no significant difference in ease of use. Both D-pads work exactly the same, and neither one works better than the other... so the question still stands...

I personally like sony's style of a dpad (if you can still call it that) because it makes it very improbable to accidentally hit a diagonal when you don't want to, which is my nr 1 annoyance with gamepads usually.
I hated the PS2 controller though, which was the only sony console I had. I couldn't get used to the pressure sensitive buttons, after half an hour of gran turismo I had to stop every time cos my thumb was hurting. So I sold the PS2 and got an xbox... Hate MS all you like but their gamepads are awesome :) (at least for those of us with bigger hands than the average asian). I hated the GBA SP for the same reason, my hands would cramp up after a little while of playing.

The gp2x is quite possibly the best design for an analogue Dpad I've ever seen.

whaaaa!!! 640x480 res screen!! i'll take it just for video ;)

and magus, the ps dpad is crap for diagonals, get over it. it's not that you can't hit diagonals, it's that it's not smooth. you'll tear up your thumb playing hard on it since you'll have to move it around a lot instead of resting it in the middle and hitting everything comfortable from there. this is why pads like the street fighter controller(better dpad) and saturn controller(nice, nice dpad) for ps2 exist.
anyway, i get the point that you like the damn thing, just quit it with these long ass posts about nothing; you can't change my mind.
didn't we discuss this a while back, too?

some like it, some don't, y'know!!

poloo2, where did you get this info?? is it true?

I think the PSP dpad is a little bigger though I don't know for sure. Also, it does not look too easy to hit 2 directions with the dpad in the picture.
