weird. I can't open that link. It opens a new tab and then immediately closes

since we are all sceptics here, let's have another look at that whole story from a different perspective: government propaganda...

A lot of criticism has been expressed by several journalists and media regarding the handling of the whole catastrophe by the thai government. It seems like they have used the catastrophe to stage a huge propaganda event and instrumentalize the destiny of the trapped boys for their own purposes. Quite a travesty, apparently.

Sadly I cannot seem to find any more articles describing the situation as it was explained in a recent "spiegel" (German opinion magazine) report about this.
This NY Times article seems to come closest:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/opinion/thailand-boys-cave.html

Apparently military forces were mostly occupied with trying to keep journalists away from the actual cave, keeping them in a camp where they would be fed and cared for by local farmers. These farmers would not be paid, but enlisted in order to "help out rescue parties" which turned into "feed the journalists so they won't ask too many questions" instead.

Furthermore several professional rescue divers, who volunteered to offer their services, actually withdrew from the operation because they were not allowed to work, but kept from the cave by the military. They reported that they felt they were being used for propaganda purposes instead and not allowed to work.

So anyway: yay for the boys, they are finally amongst the living again...

(machine-translated from german)

With suite and cantata against the state in the state - SECRET SERVICES OFF!

Today's German intelligence services Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Militärische Abschirmdienst (MAD) and Verfassungsschutz (VS) have emerged from structures of Nazi fascism. With support from US intelligence agencies in several NATO states, armed underground structures ("stay behind") emerged, in which old and new Nazis were numerously represented in the FRG.
After 1989, Nazi groups were also organized in the territory of the former GDR with the help of the VS. The cadres of the NSU came from the "Thuringian Homeland Security", which was financed, inter alia, via the VS.
After the self-dismantling of the NSU, documents were also destroyed in the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution documenting the activities of dozens of people from the NSU environment. A VS-person was demonstrably at the NSU murder in Kassel at the scene. The VS still hinders judicial investigations, so that no one had to fear criminal consequences from the VS. Instead of the right milieu, the environment of the victims was suspected for years.
And these secret services are getting more and more money, staff, powers!

From all this it becomes clear that activities of state secret services are not clearly distinguishable from the activities of terrorist organizations. This is all the more devastating, as attacks are often "responded to" by war terror, which plunges entire regions of the world into chaos, inflicts immeasurable suffering on people and forces them to flee.

We demand:
  • Shutdown the VS and all other secret services!
  • Do not tolerate the intelligence activity of foreign services and protect whistleblowers!
  • Offenders, accomplices and confidants from politics and public authorities are responsible!
  • Stop the oppressive and surveillance structures in our country!
  • Defense and development of democratic rights!

SOLIDARITY, FREEDOM and EQUALITY instead of state anxiety!

Looks like the BBC were hoping for a bigger protest in Chemnitz. Instead we get some video filmed earlier in the day of some somewhat lively discussions, then our correspondent standing in front of an empty roundabout doing a piece to camera.

YouTube "Chemnitz Protest", looked like a pretty substantial turn out to me. BBC bias?

Probably bad timing, or they were kept away by the police I don't know. They had some VT from the daylight hours, but by the time the 10'o clock news here happened it'd be 11pm there, and it seemed to be over there, at least where the correspondent was reporting from.

As an American, it is my obligation to argue endlessly in Serena's defense about what just went down at the US Open, no matter how right or wrong it may be. Come at me, non-American bros.

On a more serious note, I think they actually should change the penalty system a bit, because all stuff like this does is make the game less enjoyable for both the winner and the, um, non-winner.

As an American, it is my obligation to argue endlessly .... no matter how right or wrong it may be.
You know... I'm starting to "get" you... executing your constitutional? moral? obligations...

Meanwhile I am pondering my footprint (the amount of destruction to the earth done by me in my lifetime) because I love avocados too...

And shaking ground....

Meat is probably worse.

For the water use, it depends where you grow things. Sounds like growing avocados in Chile is a bad idea, but people in the comments are saying the trees in Florida don't even need watering.

*cough* Milk *cough*
TLDR: We blow a shiltload of money into some farmers asses to produce milk that no one ever needs but thanks to even more subventions it pays of to heat it up, pulverise it, load a cargo ship with it and ship it to afrika to push any wannabe african farmer out of buisness with our low cost milk powder.

@forestfelling
How come that EVERYONE knows how wrong this shit is and yet only very little have the courage to do something about it?
