Wiz Screen Burn - Has Anyone Had This Also?

Hi there. After having my Wiz on for about 5 hours (charging) I have noticed considerable screen burn - a ghost image of the main menu, whilst I am in the terminal especially, but everywhere on the console. Rebooting does NOT fix this. Not too impressed tbh - looks like my review will have some considerable cons to mention about this device. Is this normal?... hope not.

OLED screens are similar to CRTs in many properties. CRTs could burn-in if displaying a static image (and they used to warn about it) and so can OLEDs. Also when the device is new it is the most susceptible to burn-in until it is broken in. They tell plasma TV owners not to leave static images on screen when new as well.

Leaving a static image for that long is bad for CRT, OLED, plasma displays. I have not experienced it because I never leave a static image on for 5 hours straight.

Your screen is probably FUBAR sorry to say.

If it takes 5 hours to burn into "wonderful" oled, and many YEARS for an lcd, this is a *poor* show, and this should not happen so fast.

I have no such issues. I agree with DaveC when he says you should not leave your screen on for a while when it is new, although I still have an old CRT TV. <_<

I would mention this in your review as a warning to those who are about to get a Wiz, not as a con for the device, however.

It is a definite con for a £130 device - how many people will *always* remember to turn it off overnight when it is charging?.

How is this in any way *not* a con?. Did I forget about the little GP2X display pixies, that magically come in the middle of the night, and brush away the burn-in?. Let's not be ridiculous now, and I sincerely hope you are not saying I shouldn't conduct an honest review; this is TERRIBLE for a supposed space-age display technology - this kinda thing is supposed to be WAY in the past!!.

Adding this to the inexcusably dire USB 2.0 file transfer performance, screen tearing issues (not many, but noticable) and, as my friend put it "it feels like a prototype" build & finish, this demonstrates that GPH *still* haven't sorted their act out... or even rehearsed it!.

Wow, I'm glad I read this thread.

This is the oh-so-wondrous "AMOLED" technology that everyone keeps raving on about... it has a ***LONG*** way to go, and it's pretty poor tbh. I shall be putting this poor technology into perspective, and the GP2X fanboys can either accept that or just tough luck, I am afraid.

It is half-hearted projects like this, which give free software & GNU/Linux the bad press, not that I take much notice, but others do. When Gamepark holdings finally ship a product with the finish and polish of the HTC Hero phone, *then* I'll take them seriously. This *is* still a prototype, and it seems as if they can't make their mind up what to do next, having read a lot of stuff on here. I know this is not meant to be the next DS Lite or PSP, but seriously - I'd rather people spoke the truth, than were blinded by fanboyish affection for their hacker's toy (it is a GREAT way to hack GNU/Linux and learn the OS, btw; dd bs=1k if=dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp :D ).

Terrible industrial design failure - next time, hire Jonathan Ive!.

Nice try, badly implemented. I would *NEVER EVER* spend £130 on this item. Ever.

The Wiz really should have come with some sort of screen saver.

Since it is Linux based, maybe someone could develop a screensaver app for it. I can't imagine it'd be too hard.

Just because you don't know how to take care of your electronics does not warrant a bad review. Please GTFO?

Fanboy?. Did I need to ask??. Nope, your bad attitude says it all.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's due to incompetence on his part. When I plug in my cell phone to charge it the screen automatically turns on and stays on for the duration until it's unplugged. Even if the device is turned off when I plug it in the screen still turns on. It's a mistake that anyone could easily make. Which is why they should have included a screen saver or something to make the screen go blank after several minutes of inactivity.

Tell that to Microsoft for using an OLED in the Zune HD, and Sony for using it in one of their Walkman players plus a host of other companies using them in phones etc.

To me the only mistake was GPH not shutting off the display after a couple of minutes.

To be fair I wonder how many people have had this problem? My guess is not very many. With my Wiz the screen turns off after 60 seconds or so...

We'll see, maybe someone will reply to the -Has Anyone Had This Also? part.

It is terrible that there was no warning in the manual and of course your review should reflect your experience. I take it you are purely a hardware reviewer?

I think you'll find that many posts here are very truthful and to be honest I haven't noticed this "fanboyish affection" you mention. There are many criticisms of the Wiz here. Control issues, cheap build feel, obviously the tearing, hard to work with. I initially had to return the console for instance due to what I see as kind of crappy buttons.

I think that the hostility you received from that one poster may have been more related to your rather poor on-line tone, no offense intended if you've done a lot of online writing but there was something about the way you came across in your posts. I'm sure it wasn't intended.

I'm not a fanboy of much of anything, I own a few handhelds and have plenty of experience with the most popular ones. I enjoy gaming of all kinds.

The bottom line is this flawed and "Terrible industrial design failure" gets the most use from me and is easily the best device I've owned, flaws and all.

Luckily I don't write reviews though I guess. I think it will be funny that the OLED screen will be considered a con. Good one. :)

Are you doing a video review? I'd like to see what the burn in looks like.

It's a shame no one has ported the Java VM from the GP2X. Glossy could try JscreenFix and see if that helps the burned screen.

There is actually a setting in the "Settings" menu that turns the screen off ("Screen Off Time") after a specified amount of time has passed - from 10 to 60secs in irregular intervals. I'm not sure if this is set to OFF as standard, but it does have this feature.

I wonder if those video apps that flash between various colours could improve your burn-in?

I don't care to try them - fact is that this "amazing" new display tech, really ain't that great after all, so far. This is a technological step backward, if we are *still* dealing with screen burn afetr all these years. *sigh*. Fortunately the unit is not mine, and a review sample - I'll just send it back, detailing the problems.

When writing a review you should probably try and be less emotional. You are clearly overreacting because you don't know how oled works. There is an auto-off function for the screen. Only mistake (although pretty big) by gph is not leaving it on by default (if that is the case). Criticizing gph for the cons of OLED just makes you look dumb. Try and write a useful review instead of something biased by your strong feelings for GPH.

I know how OLED works very well, thankyou. I am a fully certified electronics engineer - it is my passion to know ever detail of these new technologies. Saying "clearly" doesn't mean it is fact.

On the technical side - it *IS* GHP's responsibility to make sure their product doesn't have a constant image on the screen when not being used. You're basically saying that if Ford put a lawnmower engine in a car, and the engine blew up because it was overloaded, that is isn't Ford's fault?; yes, yes it IS. If a resistor has too much current passing through it, and it overheats and melts the casing, that is *also* a design flaw on behalf of the manufacturer, not a fault on behalf of the user.

You can approach this from whatever angle you like, trying to side-step the issue here; the bottom line is with GPH, and they obviously haven't tested the screens properly for burn in/other defects, and yes - AMOLED is a new technology, so they should take the appropriate precautions to avoid this issue, with either hardware or software (or both). The screen is now ruined - I'd be less than happy, had I bought one.

Thanks.
