I don't think anything that was stated in this thread was rudely stated or disrespectful.
Because I don't think you were just "very politely stating some moderate criticism" of Pandora. Saying that it won't be released in the spring solely because you don't expect products to be released then is weak, but moreover it's saying off the bat that the Pandora team are unreliable. They deserve the benefit of the doubt before you jump on them for something they haven't done. If it IS delayed until winter 2008 then we can talk about not expecting them to keep release ranges.
Here's the problem with that logic: Say this brand new company with no design/manufacturing experience happens to be late? Then GP2X sales were lost for nothing. I'm not a gp2x "fan boy", but of all the systems that are out now, the GP2x meets my needs the best. Being invested in the system, I obviously want the system to do well enough to keep interest in it. Now this can't go on forever, technology does move on, but then we get back to the fact that the GP2X isn't tapped. There are several projects out there that have substantial speed ups by using the second processor for sound. I have not heard any developer state that the project they want to do is being held back by the technical constraints of the system except for emulator authors. The GP2X will never emulate the N64 or PSX and other newer systems, but as far as SNES and GBA, I think there is a way to go. Just recently a new snes improvement was made that people swore was impossible. At one time people were saying that sega cd was very unlikely and most of the games can be played full speed while underclocking the gp2x.
To take a trip into pc world, for YEARS people insisted that POWERPC emulation on x86 was impossible at any usable speeds for the foreseeable future. Long technical papers were written explaining why it wasn't possible, yet here we are with usuable powerpc emulation even on moderately slow pc's. My Athlon 800 runs sheepshaver ppc at a reasonable speed. The Athlon 800 was long dead at the time these papers were being written. Most of the emulators are ports from the pc platform and I'm sure that's not helping matters.
The fact that people are porting over emulators from the pc platform that are aimed at pc's with multi gigahertz processors and they are not running full speed is not an indication that the machine no longer can impress. Yes, the world will move on it's an eventuality that cann not (happily) be avoided, but in this case, there is not a screaming need. I'd like to see it happen you can get MUCH more power for the same price. The cost of the Pandora's soc will go down, some day it will sell for next to nothing. When it comes down enough to offer the Pandora at a more attractive price point (say $169-$199) then great. If price is no object, why stop at the Pandora? Why not get the fastest possible soc and sell the system for $999, after all some people will buy it?
Saying that people shouldn't post about Pandora here because it's a "Gamepark forum" is unfair and you're in no position to say such a thing because they aren't your forums and you aren't the one who has decided their purpose. And saying that GP2X hasn't been pushed nearly as far as it could be is unfounded and can be taken as disrespectful to developers.
How is it unfair to say a forum for gampark game systems should be for gamepark game systems? While I agree that I'm not the judge and jury, I do know their is some hypocrisy going on here. If people kept starting psp threads, eventually we would stand up and ask them to take their psp talk to a psp forum. It's only because the main backers of the Pandora are long time supporters of the gpxx that it's tolerated. It's ultimately up to the owners of the site, but until they speak up and make their opinions known, I have the right protest, so long as I am not a dick about it, which I havn't been (that's just common courtesy).
I'm not a Pandora fanboy at all, I dislike the design as much of a lot of people but I think the big difference between me and people making some of these posts is that I'm not a GP2X fanboy either, I didn't just buy a shiny new F200 that I'm worried will now be abandoned, I actually think GP2X rather sucks. Even worse than a GP2X fanboy is a GPH fanboy, fortunately those are in few numbers! (yet somehow still exist)
If you think the GP2X "Rather sucks", then what are you doing here? I think the dual screen sucks, but I don't go to Nintendo forums and tell them I think their machine sucks and that they should buy Gamepark. I don't consider myself a fanboy of GPH, but I think the gp32 was awesome for it's time and the gp2x falls short of that glory, but is still a pretty good emulation platform (for old systems) and homebrew system.
Constructive criticism can be useful, and a lot of what's said about Pandora falls under this. But then again, some of the posts are more of the tone "we don't want your kind here, stay away from our GP2X", which is anything but constructive. Saying it won't be released in spring, costs too much, is stealing away GP2X devs isn't constructive. Trying to deter people from being excited about it isn't constructive (and isn't going to work). Complaining about it having a keyboard isn't constructive because this is the device it's aiming to be and it isn't going to change - I don't like it either, but there's no point going on about it. Suggesting alternative designs probably isn't constructive anymore because it's pretty certain now that this is the basic design they'll have.
I really don't think anything I have said has been rude or disrespectfull. Every statement I have made might not fall under "constructive criticism", but certainly nothing was over the top of out and out disrespectful.
EDIT: And complaining about the price is not constructive, because craigix directly asked "will you be willing to pay £200 for this level of hardware?", something people almost unanimously agreed to. The SoC is set in stone and that's determining the base price of the unit. For the most part it's not negotiable and I don't think anyone could realistically expect it to be. Your complaints are mostly not of the nature "these are some things you could do to make Pandora better" but more "guys, Pandora is going to suck so you'd better not anticipate it", which appear suspiciously motivated by a desire to protect your GP2X purchase.[/b]
Complaining about price is about the most constructive criticism there is. It's simply stating that as an adult with a lot of bills, children, rising cost of living, huge energy cost increases, there may not be enough left to JUSTIFY a large expenditure for a toy. A lot of people can't justify laying out nearly $400 for a game system, when there are hungry mouths to feed, $400 month heating bills $250 month gasoline, car insurance, mortgage... (you get t he idea). On the flip side of that, it is a one time expenditure since most of the software is free, but a lot of people around here like to show their appreciation for the hard work of the developers, without which it would be an expensive paperweight (less the built in stuff).
Please forgive my use of bold, it was just the easiest way to differentiate my comments from his.
