That's an awfully slanted thing for you to say. Where are these rude nasty replies, you mean the one I made to you here? http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showt...9860&st=15#

I don't think anything that was stated in this thread was rudely stated or disrespectful.

Because I don't think you were just "very politely stating some moderate criticism" of Pandora. Saying that it won't be released in the spring solely because you don't expect products to be released then is weak, but moreover it's saying off the bat that the Pandora team are unreliable. They deserve the benefit of the doubt before you jump on them for something they haven't done. If it IS delayed until winter 2008 then we can talk about not expecting them to keep release ranges.

Here's the problem with that logic: Say this brand new company with no design/manufacturing experience happens to be late? Then GP2X sales were lost for nothing. I'm not a gp2x "fan boy", but of all the systems that are out now, the GP2x meets my needs the best. Being invested in the system, I obviously want the system to do well enough to keep interest in it. Now this can't go on forever, technology does move on, but then we get back to the fact that the GP2X isn't tapped. There are several projects out there that have substantial speed ups by using the second processor for sound. I have not heard any developer state that the project they want to do is being held back by the technical constraints of the system except for emulator authors. The GP2X will never emulate the N64 or PSX and other newer systems, but as far as SNES and GBA, I think there is a way to go. Just recently a new snes improvement was made that people swore was impossible. At one time people were saying that sega cd was very unlikely and most of the games can be played full speed while underclocking the gp2x.

To take a trip into pc world, for YEARS people insisted that POWERPC emulation on x86 was impossible at any usable speeds for the foreseeable future. Long technical papers were written explaining why it wasn't possible, yet here we are with usuable powerpc emulation even on moderately slow pc's. My Athlon 800 runs sheepshaver ppc at a reasonable speed. The Athlon 800 was long dead at the time these papers were being written. Most of the emulators are ports from the pc platform and I'm sure that's not helping matters.

The fact that people are porting over emulators from the pc platform that are aimed at pc's with multi gigahertz processors and they are not running full speed is not an indication that the machine no longer can impress. Yes, the world will move on it's an eventuality that cann not (happily) be avoided, but in this case, there is not a screaming need. I'd like to see it happen you can get MUCH more power for the same price. The cost of the Pandora's soc will go down, some day it will sell for next to nothing. When it comes down enough to offer the Pandora at a more attractive price point (say $169-$199) then great. If price is no object, why stop at the Pandora? Why not get the fastest possible soc and sell the system for $999, after all some people will buy it?

Saying that people shouldn't post about Pandora here because it's a "Gamepark forum" is unfair and you're in no position to say such a thing because they aren't your forums and you aren't the one who has decided their purpose. And saying that GP2X hasn't been pushed nearly as far as it could be is unfounded and can be taken as disrespectful to developers.

How is it unfair to say a forum for gampark game systems should be for gamepark game systems? While I agree that I'm not the judge and jury, I do know their is some hypocrisy going on here. If people kept starting psp threads, eventually we would stand up and ask them to take their psp talk to a psp forum. It's only because the main backers of the Pandora are long time supporters of the gpxx that it's tolerated. It's ultimately up to the owners of the site, but until they speak up and make their opinions known, I have the right protest, so long as I am not a dick about it, which I havn't been (that's just common courtesy).

I'm not a Pandora fanboy at all, I dislike the design as much of a lot of people but I think the big difference between me and people making some of these posts is that I'm not a GP2X fanboy either, I didn't just buy a shiny new F200 that I'm worried will now be abandoned, I actually think GP2X rather sucks. Even worse than a GP2X fanboy is a GPH fanboy, fortunately those are in few numbers! (yet somehow still exist)

If you think the GP2X "Rather sucks", then what are you doing here? I think the dual screen sucks, but I don't go to Nintendo forums and tell them I think their machine sucks and that they should buy Gamepark. I don't consider myself a fanboy of GPH, but I think the gp32 was awesome for it's time and the gp2x falls short of that glory, but is still a pretty good emulation platform (for old systems) and homebrew system.

Constructive criticism can be useful, and a lot of what's said about Pandora falls under this. But then again, some of the posts are more of the tone "we don't want your kind here, stay away from our GP2X", which is anything but constructive. Saying it won't be released in spring, costs too much, is stealing away GP2X devs isn't constructive. Trying to deter people from being excited about it isn't constructive (and isn't going to work). Complaining about it having a keyboard isn't constructive because this is the device it's aiming to be and it isn't going to change - I don't like it either, but there's no point going on about it. Suggesting alternative designs probably isn't constructive anymore because it's pretty certain now that this is the basic design they'll have.

I really don't think anything I have said has been rude or disrespectfull. Every statement I have made might not fall under "constructive criticism", but certainly nothing was over the top of out and out disrespectful.

EDIT: And complaining about the price is not constructive, because craigix directly asked "will you be willing to pay £200 for this level of hardware?", something people almost unanimously agreed to. The SoC is set in stone and that's determining the base price of the unit. For the most part it's not negotiable and I don't think anyone could realistically expect it to be. Your complaints are mostly not of the nature "these are some things you could do to make Pandora better" but more "guys, Pandora is going to suck so you'd better not anticipate it", which appear suspiciously motivated by a desire to protect your GP2X purchase.[/b]

Complaining about price is about the most constructive criticism there is. It's simply stating that as an adult with a lot of bills, children, rising cost of living, huge energy cost increases, there may not be enough left to JUSTIFY a large expenditure for a toy. A lot of people can't justify laying out nearly $400 for a game system, when there are hungry mouths to feed, $400 month heating bills $250 month gasoline, car insurance, mortgage... (you get t he idea). On the flip side of that, it is a one time expenditure since most of the software is free, but a lot of people around here like to show their appreciation for the hard work of the developers, without which it would be an expensive paperweight (less the built in stuff).

Please forgive my use of bold, it was just the easiest way to differentiate my comments from his.

If you come to the board making insulting statements displaying the maturity level of a retarded hamster(there is no way you can make me read your parent post on this thread and think it's isn't immature), you will get immature, furious or impatient answers. That is both expected, obvious, and maybe even called-for.

But you appear in denial. So I, being bored, tired and otherwise amused by a good web trouncing, will explain this to you in greater detail using varying levels of sarcasm and wit:

QUOTE

Will the pandora ever come out? Looking at openpandora.org I see nothing but a poorly designed website. Is there a release date? Are there even plans to make it?
Will the pandora ever come out?
Sarcasm:No. Craigx has been pulling our leg this whole time. Actually, this forum is only a way for him to get our contact information to sell to spammers.

Serious:This statement was sarcasm on your part. In a rather impatient or possibly insulting tone. Either way, it certainly wasn't polite.

Looking at openpandora.org I see nothing but a poorly designed website
Witty:Well....you have a point there.

Serious: Even though the site is as ugly as sin, you could probably have phrased that a little less harshly if you were expecting flattery. Especially in light of your first sentence.

Is there a release date?
Sarcasm: We're keeping it secret from you. We only want some selective people to get it and force the rest of you to look at us with envy.

Serious: This is an old saying: "Use the bloody search button". Seriously, I can understand this behavior in threads that grew to suh behemoth sizes as the original announcement post, but heck, three bloody short threads down you would have gotten an answer.

Are there even plans to make it?
Sarcasm: Nope.

Serious: Come on. This encompasses all the reasons from the last two nitpicks: read the damn forum, search the damn forum, and use your damned head before typing.

The only person exhibiting any level of snarkyness on that thread was you, Christo. Though Exo did call you on it on the before last post of the page, but still only aiming the slightly blunter paragraphs to your own blunt theories of how craigx is using Pandora to take over the homebrew mobile world in an effort to devalue GPH and promote his own 'ill fated' console in its place, even though he does and probably plans to continue selling both.

There we go. I'm out of word juices.

Take a look at the thread again, I didn't start it. I am not the one who posted the original comment.

Furthermore, if you look at my posting history over 4 years you will see that most of my posts are questions, or answers to other people's questions. I try to be helpful to people having problems, even newbies. And when I'm having a problem, ask for help, or sometimes just a comment about a favorite game or a wish or something like that. I also have participated in various polls... I rarely have been engaged in this type of "arguing". I'm just trying to point out here that I'm not a troll.

I am waiting for the NEO1973 (open phone) a long time now and because it is delayed continuously I'm at a point right now where I might be getting another phone.
the development devices of the 1973 are released, but they really arent very usable... nifty thing though.

I was going to burn this topic with a flame so hard, you'd be able to see the server on fire from space. It's really not worth the time, energy, or effort. The post boiled down to "if you dont like it, leave." it's very simple, people who cant afford the Pandora will continue to develop for the gp2x. Some authors will do back ports to the gp2x (if there is enough drive) and you came into the gp2x scene close to it's end of life. it sucks. I can afford the Pandora, and thus I'll be buying it. it's new technology, and you pay a premium for it, fact of life.

mods, lock the topic already and stop letting the trolls be fed, nothing new here, just useless nonconstructive bickering.

3) The keyboard doesn't appear to be a very good keyboard

4) gp32x.de is the only regularly updated english speaking website devoted to gamepark machines and is being overrun with Pandora posts.

5)Might segment the already small community into insignificance

6) That the GP2X was far from tapped, especially for home brew games and that an introduction of a new console is premature.
1. Do you have any evidence to support this? Seems like a Hasty Generalization to me.

2. It's not competing with the GP2X (from Gamepark Holdings, not Gamepark). The Pandora is way out of the league of GP2X competition.

3. Opinion.

4. So?

5. I guess you'll be part of the (tiny) majority then.

6. Why do you think that? Does it need to be tapped (see: Sqdef) to be fun?

The thing is, you don't really have any evidence that Pandora would actually deter developers. No one has admitted that they would have kept developing for GP2X if not for Pandora, and anyone who does say that may just be putting up a convenient front. The other thing is that even if delays cause this to happen, a lack of delays would mean even fewer people develop for GP2X instead - if anything, a delay is what you want. But I think what you really want is for it not to be released at all.

Just recently a new snes improvement was made that people swore was impossible. At one time people were saying that sega cd was very unlikely and most of the games can be played full speed while underclocking the gp2x.
A lot of people say something is impossible or unlikely without any credentials for it - these people should be ignored. I find it kind of annoying when something happens and people jump to say "everyone said it was impossible but they were proven wrong! That means ANYTHING can happen!" - instead of saying things like this it's much better to actually logically look at things on a case by case basis.

It may be true that more can be done to improve SNES (although I have no idea what this improvement you're talking about refers to) but I really doubt anyone is going to be willing to do this now. Most of the bottlenecks are in the rendering subsystem and anything dealing with SNES rendering is immense, including the effort necessary to just rewrite the thing in ARM ASM. GBA rendering is also pretty bad, although not as bad as SNES (no, that doesn't mean it's weaker, it's really stronger, just lacks some of the more obscure options)

I don't expect anyone aside from me to work on GBA emulation either. However, Pandora won't deter me from developing it for GP2X, in fact, quite the opposite - as a bulk of the work is specific to CPU type (and both cores can run ARMv4 code) it's very likely that whatever development I do for Pandora will be backported to GP2X. Since Pandora will be a more developer friendly platform, not requiring batteries, taking DC in the back inside of the side, being able to connect with wireless, and being much faster/having more RAM (believe me, this makes a huge difference when it comes to debugging emulators) I'm much more motivated to use it to develop for than GP2X. This trend could very well play out for other developers - look at zodttd, he recently worked on improving psx4all with iPhone in mind, and this resulted in a new build for GP2X. You should be happy there are new ARM platforms coming out.

Although that does mean that the second core might not be heavily utilized, I've already explained to you that it's not nearly as useful for emulation as you think. I'm sure the best counterpoint you can give is Genesis, but in this case the sound emulation actually uses a lot of CPU time since it's a complex chip (that isn't emulated in ASM like the CPU and video), and sound is low latency enough/doesn't require as much synchronization to the point where you can really get away with this more. On other platforms video/CPU combined tend to dominate what's needed for sound, especially on GBA.

I think you're mincing words a lot here, I don't know what you consider "reasonable", but I'd love to see these papers (really, I mean that) and I'd also like to see how your experience violates them, specifically. User account is that on machines more powerful than yours Sheepshaver is "sluggish." The team claims about 12.5% native performance, but I'm not really seeing it in the benchmarks - in nbench the 32bit emulation performs significantly worse across the board compared to the MacOS X run. I don't know why they didn't include it being run natively under MacOS 9 on the 400MHz G4, as opposed to it under Sheepshaver on it, but I don't think that benchmark is a fair comparison since it's so much slower than it being ran on OS X. This is for nbench; the carbon fractal non-Altivec results are much worse. Of course, to determine what "native speed" is they'd have to determine how much faster a 3200MHz Xeon (Pentium 4??) is than a 400MHz G4, something they haven't benchmarked (I think they just assume 8x speed)

And why do you expect this trend to change if Pandora isn't released? You can believe all you want that there's a lot of untapped potential but how will that motivate any of the few skilled people capable of uncovering any of that potential to actually do so?

Nowhere has anyone ever said that price is no object. Rather, they're willing to pay an amount that is suitable for the level of hardware they're getting, and it's a price that's very competitive with the devices it's actually meant to compete with. They're not going to charge outrageous prices just because they think people are willing to pay. They're not Apple. And OMAP3430 is probably the BEST SoC on the market, I don't know what you're considering.

There really is no hypocrisy and you really don't have right to complain, because guess what, these forums were never meant to be only for GP32 and GP2X but really for whatever platforms the majority were interested in - if XGP came out then they would have been featured on these forums as well instead of being dropped. Unlike with Sony and Nintendo related forums, the company that makes these things here is completely irrelevant because that doesn't influence what kind of software will be written. They don't have first party software worth mentioning and they don't have third party relationships worth mentioning. You're really saying that if GPH were developing Pandora it'd be appropriate for people to talk about it here but I think we can all see that it doesn't matter.

There's no "only if" for why it's tolerated, the people who run this site are clearly for Pandora being discussed or they wouldn't have made forums for it, end of discussion.

Newsflash: a LOT of people here think GP2X sucks, that doesn't mean they don't have one and don't use it. I'm a developer for GP2X and I'm sure I wouldn't have ever started my current project for it if I didn't go to these forums and realize that people wanted it. I'm capable of seeing more than just my own interests regarding this...

Nowhere have I ever said "buy Pandora over GP2X", I think that when it's out people will be smart enough to make their own decisions about it. I don't even know myself that Pandora won't suck too.

Besides, I have to say again, these aren't GP2X/GP32 forums anymore. You can hate it all you want but unless Pandora gets canceled this will be the official place to talk about it.

Seriously, price is going to be the major drawback of this geekish device.
Unanimous doesn't mean everyone in the world, it means amongst the people polled. If you've polled a better range of people I'd like to see it, or maybe you think the Pandora team should have invested in expensive focus testing to try to determine what people will go for? Everything is sampled, but I'll take the sampling of dozens of people on this board over a sampling of one.

Deed said:
Yep, this is the problem. Imho it was not very smart to choose a powerful but expensice chip. It would have been far smarter to fix a retail price for the unit before actually designing it (e.g. 200€), then fix design to hit this price target.
It's just a question of what people want more, price or power. I'm going to bet on the latter one if the GP2X buying crowd is any indication (and not just these forums), given that they're people interested in a device that'll have little retail software (think of how much the average DS owner pays for in games!) and emulates older platforms that will appeal to an older crowd that has a little extra money than your average child.

Other than that I'll refer you back to the much larger sampling we have than you do.

I'm sorry if you can't afford to buy one (or have your parents buy one for you) but that's not good enough to convince anyone that it'll be less successful this way.

Looking forward to the Pandora. Imo the new SOC delayed the launch a lot. This was a firm request of a couple of people (most noticeable Exophase) and if that was a wise decision, future will tell.
I hope you don't get the wrong idea; I always thought OMAP3430 was a great sounding SoC but I never have any idea that it was even viable and didn't push for it to be used before craigix all but decided he wanted it.

I'm not convinced that the GP2X is at the end of life. Gamepark just released a major new version of the machine and software releases have picked up a pretty good deal. Hopefully the momentum will continue.

Try harder. You're still wearing a bridge on your back.

Seriously, I didn't even bother clicking your user history, for I do not care. A humanitarian that eats babies doesn't get a free ride because he donates to the Red Cross.

You seem completely opposed to the Pandora because it seems you feel it's somehow infringing on GP2X turf and that makes your console feel inadequate. So you litter this forum with "Well, this was a horrible idea, the keyboard sucks, this thing will never come out, it's all an anti-GP2X conspiracy, this non-GPH-owned website is posting non-GP2X stuff and its making baby jesus cry" posts all the while claiming not to be a troll.

I have a GP2X. I liked what it stood for, but hate the hardware. I'm looking forward to Pandora which stands for the same but stands to have awesome hardware.

At the risk of(well...the intention of as well) sounding crass, if Pandora offends you, go away. Here thar be dragons.

yep, i agree

ok, stop joking, i think was made an huge mistake here, announcing stuff months and months before a release, with a no fucking photo of nothing that's not an LCD brings people to think that it will came out in years.
Also doing some prototypes is a thing, starting a mass production stuff is another... but ok, it was already covered a lot so i'm just hoping to be wrong

Calling something vaporware just because you aren't holding it in your hands isn't fair. Nothing is completed immediately. Putting some information out ahead of time is a good thing because it allowed people to give some input on what was being done, or at the very least it let people get comfortable with the ideas. It also gives time to raise/set aside the money, for the people who need it.

It's not going to take years to come out because they aren't designing a bunch of custom hardware and they don't need developers to have a year with devkits ahead of time to have a launch lineup that actually contains something (like gaming consoles/handhelds do). They're also launching at 3100 units, which is a tiny fraction of what big platforms launch with.

If someone actually has a good reason as to why Pandora absolutely can't launch by early June or so then let's hear it. Until then why don't you wait and see, and if they really do delay it then you can go on about it. Criticizing them for something they haven't even done is just a little far reaching.

I also have participated in various polls... I rarely have been engaged in this type of "arguing". I'm just trying to point out here that I'm not a troll.

The fact there are a few people on this board that disagree with me on this one issue, does not make me a troll (or a baby eater:) Your entire response was an answer to the first question asked which was not asked by me so I don't see why you were referring to me.
I chose to let the thread die that he pointed to because he basically said the gp2x sucked and I could see that it would never go anywhere and he was trolling, he didn't "trounce" me. His points were no more valid or better stated than mine. (How he comes to a website about gamepark game systems and says they suck, but I'm the troll is beyond me) Furthermore he and 1 or 2 others took a few criticisms of the Pandora and turned it into 'The Pandora sucks, it's vaporware which is good because even if it did show up it would probably show up broken' (maybe not that bad, but you get the drift). One of my criticisms is the keyboard (which I like). I stated that reviewers would probably criticize the machine for it not being a full keyboard and having small keys and too many fn keys (where you have to hold a button down, usually fn to produce additional characters with fewer keys). While from my perspective having a keyboard is a great thing for emulators of computers, the larger gaming audience won't care about emulating a c64 or an Amiga and will be assumed to be there for pda functions. Since the KB appears to be too small to be usable as a pda keyboard they will just criticize it. It was just a concern and I thought I made that clear right from the begining. I understand the keyboard, most of us understand the keyboard, the larger gaming community does not.
The Pandora does not offend me and if it turns out to be good, I'll probably buy one when the price drops to a level that I can justify on a game (keep in mind that I am 38, the head of a household and not rich enough to buy a new game system every year). If you are young, still in college, don't own a home and feed kids, then you probably have money to burn. When I was in that condition I owned every game system around because I had lots of disposable income, today things are different. You are defending the Pandora because you like it, I am defending the gp2x because I like it (despite it's shortcomings, I am by no means delusional about my GP2X and am acutely aware of it's shortcomings)

Finally, there is a Pandora website, why don't people talk about it there? Ask Craig to put a forum there and let people talk about it there.

This is not an official GP2X or GPH forum, what's your problem? It's a forum for the GP32/GP2x community, soon to be the GP32/GP2x/Pandora community. Pandora appears to be developed by the community, for the community. Once it gets released, and if it surpasses this little community, sure your comments may be valid. Until then, STFU.

The Pandora is a project between several people, one of which is EvilDragon who is the Admin of this site.

Hey buddy, you don't like being called a troll why don't you watch who you call a troll in return. To everyone else, get a clue, a troll is someone who posts things just with no intent other than to annoy people, they have no actual attachment to what they're saying. This guy isn't a troll, he's just another person who's really biased and doesn't like to read the things people say, much less properly rebut them.

I say that because I already told you that I didn't join these boards just to say GP2X sucks. I'm a developer of GP2X software in spite of the fact that I think it sucks, because people own GP2X's and want said software. I don't go around saying it sucks either, I only said it in this thread to illustrate that I'm not biased against Pandora like you are. I actually didn't say it sucked in the OTHER thread too so come up with a better reason for why you didn't respond. What I said is that your expectations for what can be done with the platform are unrealistic, and I think given the fact that I've spent far more hours trying to optimize code for it than you have... I'll let you draw your own conclusions on that one.

You know, I think I am going to have to concede on this one. While I am not the only one who objects to it, I am in the minority, it's not my website and I'm not paying the bills. The owner doesn't appear to object and may very well be on the Pandora team for all I know. So yes, you are right.
