Why Should We Buy This Gpx2?

OrR: You're missing the point. The GPX2 isn't meant to be another Zodiac; it has no PDA-like functions and is geared specifically towards homebrew development rather than commercial. There's no handheld like this on earth, save for the GP32 which was more of an happy accident.
No, I'm not missing the point. The point is to find a handheld that is good for playing games and that actually has games to offer that you want to play. The Zodiac has lot's of homebrew development and much of it is commercial homebrew development. I like it that way because developers that earn money also invest more time into their games. This results in more polished and overall better games. Still, the homebrew ideal, some guy developing whatever he wants in his basement, does not get lost.
The GPX2 isn't meant to be another Zodiac and that's what I don't like about it. Linux, great! Oh wait, no good text input system or mouse replacement? A 320*240 screen? Well...

It's ok if you don't know much about the Zodiac. It's not ok if you talk bullshit about it. It is expensive but it is worth every dollar. No other handheld comes close to the Zodiac.

Pardon me while I LOL, analog makes things like a few PSone games a lil better, but for anything beyond that it's hell, plus it's pricy for being a closed setup. (And pay-for emulators= lose.) And I don't dig having an expensive hard to replace battery in a handheld.

My personal opinion on the topic: The GPX2 seems totally useless. It has a little more computing power but too little. It still has the same small screen. It has no touchscreen and not even an analog stick. If you've got a GP32 you don't really need it. The GPX2 needs exclusive content bad because it has not much else to offer. The games is what it's all about after all.

My personal opinion is you are looking for a PDA, and not a multi-function emulation and media behemoth, Screen too small? The aspect ratio is just right to scale just about anything and everything to it properly.

No touchscreen? Oh goodie gumdrops. Just what I always wanted, a screen full of creases scratches and smudges 24/7 just to open a menu I could click in only one millisecond more with a button press. And like I said, you're looking for a PDA or a nintendo DS, not the kind of device the GPX2 is.

and too little power? Dual processors not one 200MHZ base one, but Overclockable Dual Processors and as for exclusive content, what does the zodiac have to offer me? A cut down spy hunter? <_<

Likewise, don't talk bullshit about something you don't know about. :p
An analog stick is a great input device far superior to a d pad. Of course, it is not good for games that are designed for a d-pad. So the perfect handheld would need both.
I'm looking for a PDA but NOT a multi-function emulation and media behemoth? My Zodiac is both of those things already and the GPX2 is none. Media, lol, on a 320*240 screen? That's half the ebook I can read and half the movie I can watch. And if you are going to tell me that the thing puts out 640*480 to TV, well, who cares? It's a handheld, if I want the big screen I'll use my PC or TV with DVD/Video player. I definately won't copy movies to an SD card to watch them via the GPX2.
How is the GPX2 multifunctional if it does not even connect to the net and do word documents? In fact it does not do anything besides media and gaming.

There is something you can do against scraches on your screen. Get a screen protector. It's a 5$ investment. I don't use one, though, and my screen is much more clean than my GBA screen ever was. The thing just does not get scratched. You would be surprised how fast touchscreen input really is. I can type on my thumbboard like I type on my PC. Maybe it's half as fast but still faster than any other handheld input I've ever seen. A touchscreen is totally awesome for RPGs, you've never seen menus rush past so fast. You need it for RTS games, without it you can only play Advance Wars. And a touchscreen is much better for Gloop. :p Ego Shooters, too, you can see it on the DS. Touchscreen is an input system you never want to loose again.

Maybe I'm not looking for the device the GPX2 is. But you are missing something big here: That's the GPX2's fault.

Next is the power issue. Well, 400 Mhz is ok. That's about what I expect from a handheld at this time and the GPX2 might offer it for a good price. There is one catch, however, and it's the same trick the next gen consoles use: Multiple cores. This is something new and few devs know how to handle it. The first generation games on the new consoles will only run with 3.5 Ghz of power and I don't think it'll be any different on the GPX2. I'm sceptical if anyone ever get's 400 Mhz of power out of those two 200 Mhz CPUs.

And now, exclusive content: The Zodiac has a ton of it, as long as you count the Palm content, too. I usually do since there is no other Palm similarly suited for gaming. In fact, most of the games on the Zodiac are not availiable on other handheld gaming devices. The only things that are not are Stunt Car Extreme (now on Gametrac, too), Tony Hawk (it's the damn GBA game) and some other ports, both homebrew and commercial. There are a lot of games exclusive to the Zodiac, however: Orbz, Bike or Die, Animated Dudes, Mazera, Xploids, Legacy, Warfare Inc, Arvale, ... Of course, you don't know them but that is kind of the point: They are Zodiac exclusive games, you can't know them if you don't know the Zod. I can assure you that I have only mentioned absolutely awesome games, though. They are worth playing and they are worth paying for.

Sure, you GP fans all want to push the GPX2 and want people to get it. Especially craigx since he earns money with it. But I agree with the post that started this thread, it just feels like something nobody needs. What's so awesome about it? The only thing that can convince me that I need it is exclusive content it seems.

Zodiac Fanboys: The GPX2 is very powerful and very versatile, has great controls and is Linux based. It's NOT a PDA, it's a gaming device with excellent multimedia support. If you want a PDA then no, it's not for you. But it will play games better than any PDA can, including the Zodiac (sorry but the analog pad and odd buttons were a disappointment).

If you don't like a certain system, then just don't visit messageboards about it. And if you don't own or really know much about a system, then just keep your uninformed opinions to yourself.
I agree that many emulated games will control better on the GPX2 than on the Zodiac. The Zodiac's analog stick stinks. However, there are MANY games and even some systems you can emulate that need a touchscreen for useful control. I'm quite angry at GPH for not including one because it would not cost much and add so much possibilities to the device... :(
An analog stick is not necessary if you've got a touchscreen but still a nice and useful addition (addition, meaning: you keep your d-pad). It also would not add much to the price.
I like the GP32 (though I never touched one... :p ) and I want to like the GPX2 but I'm having problems trying to. It's a nice system but after having seen a Zodiac the update from the GP32 is a bit disapointing.

I don't think I am. It's no my fault that I expect more from a handheld than the GPX2 has to offer, it's the GPX2's fault for not offering more. I won't adjust my needs to a handheld, I want the handheld to best fit my needs. Like all others, the GPX2 does not fullfil all my wishes. Well, that's ok but the problem is that it fullfils fewer than I had hoped, fewer than I expect and fewer than my last handheld, the Zodiac.

Then shut the fuck up and go play your zodiac.

? I said I like the thing and I should have gotten it when I first heard about it. It's getting old now (took a long time though) but I might still get one for all the content it has to offer. Talking about the GP32 of course. This isn't the GP32 section, though, but the GPX2 section and that's the system I want to talk about. Question: Did you ever touch one of those?

I do play my Zodiac but I won't shut up. Why are you guys so allergic against negative comments about the GPX2? Isn't it ok to criticize it? I don't think I'm talking out of my arse or flaming anyone, I try to state arguments and try to actually type stuff that makes sense. Then you come along, call me a dumbass and tell me to shut the fuck up. Huh? How about trying to find some argument for the GPX2 instead of creating arguments against it's community?

The point is to find a handheld that is good for playing games and that actually has games to offer that you want to play.

Maybe I'd LIKE to play Zelda and Metroid again? My father has played through the NES and GBA metroid games more than I EVER have.

There are hundreds of Linux applications that will eventually be availible in the comming months, and you know what? some of them are games!

Listen dude, you;ve convinced yourself you don't need it, that's fine. but that dosent mean other people don't see a use for it in their lives. You are not everyone don't expect everyone to think like you do.

I don't expect everyone to think like me, of course. I'm also not convinced I don't want it (since I don't need a handheld game system at all as some guy above reminded me  ). What I want is a more critic view of the GPX2 that may actually lead to some arguments FOR getting one. It has more power, it's got a good price, it's got two more buttons... (Compared to GP32) What is also interesting is what can be done to make it a handheld I want more than I do now: Add content!
What I also want is to remind people what the GPX2 actually is and what it really can do. You can easily forget that stuff with all the propaganda going on... Propaganda by craigx so that everybody buys GPX2s from him, propaganda from DaveC so that nobody buys the XGP (because it has a higher resolution screen) etc. It looks to me as an outsider as if a few of the main community members have decided that the GPX2 is the way to go and that the mindless masses follow them. I think the XGP could be an awesome system (if it gets a touchscreen that is). What really makes the GPX2 better? (Don't tell me what makes the XGP worse, though, since the system design does not seem to be final, yet, and since this thread should be about the GPX2.)

Well, my sentence meant to include emulated games for people who like emulated games. People like me for example. I'm just playing Chrono Trigger on my Zod. Man, that game is so totally AWESOME!!! B)

Trouble: Many good Linux games need mouse control (=touchscreen)... At least I think so since I have to admit that I don't know a thing about Linux games... :D

I dont see how you can say anything against the gp32's screen, you have obviously neve used one.
"it the same as gp32"
Wrong, its a succesor to it, and why change things that are just perfeckt as they are?

Ok, you're right, I don't know the GP32's screen, and I also don't know the GPX2's screen. I do, however, know the resolution and size. The size is ok but it could be bigger without making the handheld much bigger. The resolution is ok, too, but I prefer 480*320. Sure, DaveC might tell everyone that he likes emus best in their original resolution but I will tell you that I like games best in their biggest resolution. Maybe few emus use more than 320*240 but lots of ports and of course original games benefit from it. Especially in combination with the screen being a touchscreen (RTS games). Movies and ebooks are better, the better the resolution and size, too. The GPX2 screen is ok. It's better than what DS and GBA have but it's worse than what PSP and Zodiac have.

most things you are going to run on your gp are 4:3, if you run the psp's screen at 4:3 its actualy smaller than the gp32 screen.
The gp32 screen is actualy pretty big, exactly the right size, through i would also like to see a touchscreen.

I think one of the best reasons to buy a GPX2 is its price. It is definately something worth what it costs. It's like why would anyone buy an Ipod Shuffle instead of an Ipod? Easy, because it's cheaper but still does the job and does it well. If GPH had $200 more dollars to spend, I'd think it would be capable of surpassing all other handhelds out there.

If the fact that the GPx2 is no zodiac bothers you don't buy it and keep your zodiac until the battery goes out and you have a paperweight. It doesn't bother us.

A 320 x 240 screen is PREFERABLE for emus because it matches the emulated system to the pixel without that annoying shit stretching and blurring. Every emu on the zodiac has to be stretched and filtered making it look like it is being played on an old out of adjustment Philco TV through an RF switch, BAH! Games at native res on the GP32/GPx2 look like they are on an RGB arcade monitor, much sharper. If you want commercial titles look elseware even on the zodiac, they pretty much suck balls. Get a PSP.

Oh yeah the GP32/GPx2 screen is just soooooo small. It is 3.5" vs 3.8" That .3" difference makes the zodiac roxxor and the GP32/GPx2 suxxorz

That analog on the zodiac just plain sucks period. It is small, flimsy, and laggy for emulation. And that is when it is working and not drifting to the right ;)

Touchscreen, meh don't need it. Analog stick? meh don't want it.

XGP? sorry don't like it. *XGP* is pointless. Analog stick? Shit for emus. Widescreen (smaller than PSP) again shit for emus, fuck stretching. Commercial 3D games? I have my PSP for that, much better and more support anyway.

No handheld comes close to the zodiac? Please, you z fanbois are too much. You and Goggeta should get married

Oh and before you say I know nothing about the zodiac, I *HAD* a zodiac 2 for almost a year. Let's say I was much less impressed by it than you are so I sold it off. I don't miss it one bit, I like the GP32 better, and will like the GPx2 even more.

Yeah, the PSP (and XGP)'s widescreen is stupid but Zod's 480*320 is the same aspect ratio as 320*240 and you get twice as many pixels on a screen that is really perfect in size. ;)

Same aspect, different resolution. Everything must be stretched or it is the size of a postage stamp. STRETCHING IS SHIT!!! It distorts the pixels making some double size while others single size giving terrible artifacts and blurr. If I play MD on the GP32 it is almost the same size as the zodiac, but it is 1:1 on GP32, all stretched to shit on the zodiac, fuck that, what is the point? You arent adding information that isn't there you are just distorting what is there. Stretching on a fixed pixel device sucks, period.

PSP commercial titles will still be far better than any crap on the XGP. The XGP is a PSP wannabe, there is no point in it.

Since you bash the GPx2 you won't buy it anyway. So it don't matter what you *would have* done.

You are just sore cause something else may be getting some attention and not the zodiac. You are just sore because tapwave bit the dust and the zodiac is dead. The zodiac community will get smaller and smaller as those batteries die, analog sticks break, touchscreens get scratched and go out. That is not our fault blame tapwave for doing such a lame job promoting it and for constructing such dodgy hardware.

You signed up here just so you could flame us, bash the GPx2, and trumpet the zodiac? what is the point? You expect us all to abandon plans to buy a GPx2 and get a zodiac from some closeout surplus bargain bin instead? No chance there, sorry.

You like the zodiac and hate the GPx2? Fine keep it, no one is forcing you to bin the zodiac and get a GPx2.

The fact that people have decided to be interested in the GPX2 is not a result of a few highprofile members or even Craig. To suggest that would mean that everyone who wants a GPX2 is a mindless sheep which isnt the case regardless of how you feel. Everyone that wants one came to that decision on their own by weighing the facts, posting a dozen easily veiwable topics a day in the last two or three weeks asking questions about it and simply being impressed by what they saw in comparison to what they have.

We're not here to convince you to buy it OrR. Convice yourself or do not it will not effect this community either way.

Really, it always amazes me to see people who just feel this undying need to piss on other's parade or become what I like to call "habitual bitchers". People who -need- something to complain about or belittle. It's like someone going to the ice cream store, and screaming "I DON'T LIKE ICE CREAM YOGURT IS BETTER" and just hanging around despite the fact you don't like ice cream and you're not converting anyone to the yogurt side.

On the flipside, I'm not at the zodiac forums going "Why should anyone buy a zodiac?" Because really, It's my personal preference that I don't much care for the zodiac, Anyone else? Buy one, buy 50, buy a swimimng pool of them! Doesn't really bother me. But complaining -constantly- when you've worn out your welcome? Jesus -christ-.

In other words, Go back to the yogurt shop and let us eat our icecream in peace. ;)
