Some cameras uses "fine" / "superfine" to keep the same resolution, but adjusts the jpeg compression factor, so "superfine" images use up more space on the card. Perfect if you are capturing a lot of single objects (eg. people, or text lettering, etc) as it will allocate more memory to such things.
Oftent it's a jpeg with less compression, meaning that there is less chance of artifacts. Also, if its a Fujifilm camera, it could be a picture that has been interpolated using their 'super-CCD' technology to produce what appears to be a higher res picture, but is in fact a lower res picture with extra pixels inserted 'intelligently' to bump up the res.
