I've just bought my 10 yo a sony clie 625c which runs the mono Liberty Palm GB emulator quite nicely at FS1. I know she used to love the pokemon cartoons so I was wondering what is the best GB mono pokemon game.

Crystal may have been the last version of Pokémon that worked on the Gameboy/GB pocket, but it was actually a GBC game. I really didn't like the fact that they added so many new monsters and Gold/Silver/Crystal added gameplay elements that made it incompatible with linkage to the earlier versions.

Call me a purist, but I would have to say that Pokémon Green(Blue)/Red was the best version. Yellow started you with F'ing Pikachu (remember you can catch him about 30 minutes into the game in the woods) which was also stupid because it made you fight the first Gym Leader with an Electric type, and a couple of Normal Types (stupid). Although what redeems this is the ability to catch Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander, later in the game, allowing opertunities to fill out your Pokédex.

Okay... I'm starting to scare myself.... Let me redeem myself by saying that when I first got into emulation the only thing that ran at more than 25% speed was a NO$GMB for DOS optimized for my 386DX 66mHz w/ 2MB of RAM, Okay?!? All I had to play on my computer was gameboy games, so bleh! :p

Pikachu will beat you up because of that comment.

Actually.. I would probably have to say Gold was the best out of the original game boy games.

Edit: I change my mind again. I choose you Red Pokemon!

Gold and Silver were very good too, but Crystal added a number of features.

I managed to get Pikachu stuck behind a wall in Yellow.

Blue, I remember everone in my primary school had red and suffered from headaches from playing it on gbc, but i was safe cos I chose blue :D.

Yeah, I had a GBC, but I played it on my GBP because I hated the colorization (until the GBC versions were released.)

Wait! The gameboy version of the Pokémon card game was really pretty entertaining. I would never buy the cards, but in a videogame it was pretty cool.

Red! Blue was far more popular (for what reason? They're nearly identical), so I went for the underdog. :p
The originals were very enjoyable, but now there are way too many pokemon in them.
I recently borrowed the gba pokemon ruby from a friend because I was bored and just had a DS and didn't like, too many pokemon, yet, too repetitive.

Really? Blue was definitely the underdog over here, dunno why, it was the only one which didn't cause a migraine,

They were actualy pretty equal here. Many people had both, what a waste, and I had this GB backup memory thing that allowed me to save my state, trade all my pokemon etc and then relaod it. Heh. Good times.

Me: 50p for a charizard

Them: WOW, That cheap?

Oh yes, I remember paying 50p for a Mew.

Bah, never gotten any deals like that. Back at that time, I'd probably shell out some money for Mew too. e.e

On a sidenote, does anyone know that cardgame? (talking about the real one, not the gb card game)
I had a lot of those, also the only one who knew how to play it. :p

I collected them, I was also the only one who new how to play too, so that was no fun. I have them in this draw next to me actuially i think.

I played the RPGs, but I'd recommend the Pokemon Trading Card Game for the GameBoy. It takes more "smarts" to play the card game than the RPG, so it might be more of a learning experience than just a time waster. Though, I don't recall if it worked on the GameBoy pocket, or if it was only for the color.

The RPG is good, though. I'd go for Blue or Red. Yellow is cute if she's into Pikachu, but it seemed more of a gimmick than anything else.

Mine are all laying in my closet in my room. My two most precious collections are two sets of 9 japanese, blinking cards of things like mew, mewto, and those rare ones in the second or third generation who's name I never learned. Never found someone to actually play it with so kept it with the gb game too. :)

I'm not doing anything with them and they're not worth anything anyway, but I still keep them out of nostalgie (and I spend a nice sum of money on the whole pack too...

The series might suck (used to be a fan of it till the age of 12), but the games are still pretty good. The card game was inventive and the rpg, while typical, had some cool elements like monster collecting...

I just started giving Crystal a go on fGB32. The series stink, but as a simplistic game it ain't bad at all.

And what's with the migraines I keep hearing about?
