What do people think of the 1ghz Pandas?

He wants OpenPandora.GmbH to be non profit and sell the finished products directly to the public at cost?

HOLY CRAP BATMAN!

thats a little bit retarded. Still i hope they can get their shit together at some point. I don't know why they are arsing about and not grtting a kickstarter going.

i saw an rpg maker game rake in 20k for kickstarter.

Alright, guys, it's fine to disagree with others' views and all that, but saying it's "retarded" and the like is *not fair*. Enough of that; Provide good reasons for your disagreement, not slurs.

You're probably trolling, but most of your above post is pure bullshit.

The goal has always been to make a profit.

If it was not the companies would be registered as charities, but even then you still pay wages.

No one would do all this work for free.

What you're saying is insane.

I suggest if that's how you feel you leave the forum and the general Pandora scene.

None of the team are willing to do anything like you suggest.
You were supposed to be doing this because it was your dream wasn't it? and like I said, the money was supposed to be made through your original shops. Try reading my post properly next time before replying.

I would find the original threads to prove it but unfortunately they don't seem to be on gp32x.de any more since it was all re-organised and the site will only let you search 200 of your own posts.

@erico -I linked to the wikipedia page explaining them.

Trip,

I don't recall the team ever claiming to be socialists. They have always been portrayed as a set of small businesses, not a charity.

Pandoras sold at high $$$ on Ebay for a while because they were in such limited supply. Supply + demand = capitalism. It was early pre-orders that were making the mark up on those though - i.e. customers re-selling their's.

In my opinion, the mistake they made was in pricing the console far too cheaply when they took the initial pre-orders. They're still digging out from that one.

I understand that you're upset that your pre-order wasn't filled before now. You have always had the options of waiting longer, upgrading to a Premium order status or opting for a refund. When did you place your order?

Many of us waited a long time for our Pandoras. I waited just a bit over 30 months (2.5 years) for mine. I think mine was one of the last ones produced in CraigIX's shop.

The device sitting on the desk next to me proves 100% that it is not, 'a scam'. A low budget project with a few bungles and natural disasters and Chinese holidays and 3rd party companies failures getting in the way - yes, that's more accurate.

Wait, upgrade or refund - those basic choices are still there. If they were a scam, that last one wouldn't be an option - and wow - talk about a long con... this would have to be some sort of record or something.

If I'm not mistaken they can't use Kickstarter for the current Pandora since it's a product that has already been established.

Is the hinge any different on the new Pandora? and is this Pandora able to play any HD video?

I agree. We should start the RON PAUL GAMING UNIT kickstarter... that money is OURS!

There most probably will be a kickstarter for Pandora2 if the Product3 one goes well.
What happened to the kickstarter for Pandora1?

Yeah well for comparison why not look at Gumstix Overo - they upgraded to DM3730 but they didn't even change the price. Why? Because they probably figured no one would view their act of replacing a chip with a drop-in replacement (that costs the same or less), years later, as offering a premium product.
After reading this, I feel some differentiation between supporters and customers must be made. As zealous as I am about linux/pocket computing/retro gaming, I have to say that when I placed an order for a pandora in January '11, I ordered it as a customer, not as a supporter*(down). As such, I expected it to show up at my door within a reasonable amount of time. Almost a year and a half have passed since then. Faulty nubs, CC, wifi issues and such *aside*, as a customer, I feel somewhat insulted that you would offer upgraded units for additional cost instead of working solely towards sending out all preorders. This is premium pandemonium all over again. There is something truly backhanded about offering a new and improved pandora to help fund the preorder customers' "old" ones. Not all zealous linux users/pocket computerists/retro gamers are broke hobbyists. Why not make more of an effort to try to reach them via online funding platforms such as kickstarter?

*Had I wanted to 'support' the project (and I would, believe me, I would if I had the spare cash), I would have donated along the lines of ED's business model.

There's probably a better place to put this, but on the off-topic, 'The OpenProjects group' (of companies set up for iCP, Pandora, product3 etc) sounds awesome :)

I agree that trying to reach the less geekologically gifted members of society would be a good idea, but please don't start the Great Android Debate again

Trip

Please think about what you are saying for a minute.

The people you are berating for being evil capitalists have nearly bankrupted themselves to dig themselves out of the financial hole that the pandora project created, and here you are telling them it's okay for them to lose money but never okay for them to make money.

Craig and Ed have always been aiming to make money from the project, and they've always been open about what is going on. There are investors now also - and Ed has legal obligations to operate the company in a transparent way to them also. I am one of those investors, and I assure you I did not invest in order to take on Open pandoras losses, I invested because Eds business plan makes sense, and I think it will turn a profit.

Although I'd like to see the Pandora devs making money from this, making a steady wage from it is a different thing altogether. That was supposed to come from your regular jobs.

[..snip..]
Hi... I just thought I'd stop lurking and chime in to say that I find your post to be rather strange.

I don't see how it is preferable that the makers of a console need another job to actually support themselves. Seems to me like that is a big part of the reason why things have moved so slowly in the Pandorasphere. If the Pandora made enough to support the team full-time, I think things would've moved a lot quicker than they have.

I have no opinion either way on whether the Pandora was originally meant to draw a profit, but back when it was £200 (including tax!)/$330, what was the profit margin on that? If there was intended profit to be made on that then it must mean that the cost of manufacture has effective tripled based on the prospective D3730 prices.

Craig, Ed and Fatih all had separate companies. People pre-ordered by giving their money to these 3 companies. This money was used to fund production and build up the units.

The 3 companies got these units for cost because they were the one's making them. This allowed them to make a profit on each of the units sold directly. The more units their shops sold the more money they made. The profit was supposed to come from companies distributing the Pandora, with those 3 companies having exclusive rights because they were the ones making it.

As well as making money on each unit sold they could also charge money for upgrades, repairs, software/hardware add-ons and by encouraging software companies to release software for the device so they could get a money from all the software sold in the software centre.

Why do you think the pre-orders were sold through 3 separate companies and not just the 1?

Why do you think Craig has been so against using an open repo spec instead of the official Pandora repo for downloading software?

Unfortunately there weren't enough units produced to get software houses interested in developing commercial titles for the machine so getting money through the repo was a dead end. They also had to do most repairs for free because the build quality wasn't as good as it was supposed to be and they couldn't get the spare parts as fast as they should have been able to.

Craig's trying to find new ways of making money from the project. Unfortunately his methods have the result of pissing off the very people that stood by the developers and helped the project get as far as it has.

Most of what your saying isnt true but you are understandably pissed at the notion of your old pandora preorder being seemingly out of date already.Still though the current non 1GHZ models still have the new silver case and the double ram and the new kernel. It's really just the soc thats new.Current pandoras clock to 800mhz on average too.

Everything I've just said is true and just for the record I'll be quite happy with a 600Mhz Pandora. I'm just pissed off at people taking the piss.

Based on the ridiculously inaccurate quotes from a certain manufacturing company we used, the profits were going to be about £30 per unit.

What we didn't factor in was that the LCD cable company would also bugger up their end of the deal too, and the nub company would go bust with our $30,000.

Now we're using reliable, professional companies the prices have all more than doubled.
