BBC News 24 said:
At least 31 people have been killed and 10 injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech university in Virginia, US. Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building.
The incidents were about two hours apart. Police say they believe there was one gunman and that he is dead.

It is the deadliest shooting at a US educational facility.

The state university in the town of Blacksburg is home to 26,000 students...

Eyewitnesses locked down inside the university buildings have been using the internet to try to glean information about what is happening and many have emailed the BBC News website.

Nikolas Macko was in a mathematics class in Norris Hall when they heard a series of loud bangs in the hallway which prompted a female student sitting near the door to move to close it.

"She peeked out into the hallway, and saw the shooter, so she immediately closed the door. Three other students moved a table that was in front of the room - it seats approximately 40 students at capacity - and barricaded it against the door.

"A few seconds later, the shooter tried to open the door, but my classmates kept it well shut, as they held the table against it from floor level.

"The shooter shot the door twice at chest level, which resulted in two holes in the door, one of which hit the podium in the front of the class room and the other continued out the window. At this point he reloaded, shot the door again - this shot did not penetrate - and moved on to the other classrooms," Mr Macko added

Just when the global news scare was about to slow down, what with the Brit soldiers being freed, boom, this. Big surprise

This is incredibly sad news. I can't believe that the police weren't able to intervene if the shootings really were two hours apart.

You all say that this is a terrible news...Yes it is.
but what a wonderful country don't you think?
You can buy a gun at 16... YAY
You can drive at 16 too.
Yet you have to wait to be 21 to drink alcohol.

What would you think if guns were prohibed?
It would be even more sad no?
For a country, to allow kids to buy a gun, in 2007, what nonsence!

God bless America

see you

yep... because anti-americanism is going to help. how about you explain why the french government is getting their ass beaten by frustrated kids from the banlieus, where did they get their guns from? or how they could maybe solve their problems with police brutality? I was in paris to battle the cpe back when all the crazy riots went on.

it's not only sad in the US... shit like that happens in europe aswell so don't be so selfrighteos.

From Wikipedia:

Ineligible Persons

* Those convicted of crimes punishable by imprisonment for over one year, except state misdemeanors punishable by two years or less.

* Fugitives from justice. (Note: this applies exclusively to citizens who leave a state where wanted for a crime; while still within the state where the crime was committed, they cannot be considered fugitives from justice.)

* Unlawful users of certain depressant, narcotic, or stimulant drugs.

* Those adjudicated as mental defectives or incompetents or those committed to any mental institution.

* Illegal aliens.

* Citizens who have renounced their citizenship.

* Those persons dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

* Minors (persons less than 18 years of age).

* Persons less than 21 years of age for the purchase of a firearm other than a shotgun or rifle.

* Persons subject to a court order that restrains such persons from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner.

* Persons convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

* Persons under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year are ineligible to receive, transport, or ship any firearm or ammunition. Under limited conditions, relief from disability may be obtained from the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, or through a pardon, expungement, restoration of rights, or setting aside of a conviction.

Do some research before you start bitching.

Also... some states such as California have even stricter laws.

Do you honestly think that extremely strict gun laws will stop people from committing gun crimes. They are already strict enough as it is. Even if there was an outright ban of guns the bad people would still get them and the good people would be defenseless. In some scenarios less restrictive rules could create safer places, who is going to mug someone in a city where one in five people has a concealed weapon? Finding a way to stop terrible things like this from happening will be incredibly difficult, a ban on handguns could possibly be helpful but could also hurt, this man could have gotten a gun in many other country's. More innovative laws need to be though of to prevent horrible tragedy's such as this. This person committed a crime and criminals do not follow laws, this is why the laws should change how guns are made and sold instead of telling individuals how old they need to be to buy the gun. Things like tracking and shorter licensing periods as well as features on the actual gun itself that for example only allow it to be used a certain way if a key is put in it at a professional range are what people need to think about.

Go ahead and criticize America but only if you have facts to back it up and please be constructive and suggest what should be changed.

Who cares if it's their own personal gun or the family rifle? Does it make a difference in this case?

guns suck, screw the constitution, illegalizes them, except for hunting guns that can be locked somewhere like a hunting club, because who the hell needs a gun?

what a jerk... if hes going to say a bunch of bullshit that isn't true on national tv then he could at least wait until a week or so after the shooting, but nooooo because then it wouldn't be fresh enough news for him to use it to brainwash people into believing him. If people learned how to be violent from GTA then they wouldn't be very functional killers as in real life holding down left trigger does not auto lock onto people.

the strangest thing about society today is actually, that people always pretend to be oh so shocked by stuff like this. But all it comes down to is that they chase for a scape-goat in the end. They never try to find the causes for such atrocities in their own behaviour or in society itself. They believe, that things that seem alien or weird to them are the causes. Wether it is marilyn manson, video games, drugs, or islam. They never seem to notice, that they are tolerating the production of guns worldwide, that they live in countries, which engage in war all over the worlds or deal in machine guns and landmines, that there is social problems and frustration that might be the causes for stuff like this.

When there was a highschool shooting in germany (i think this was about 3 years ago), they blamed slip knot and counterstrike... it didn't occur to the news-media that the killer was member of a gun-club for several years where he got into possession of a gun and learned how to shoot, that his parents didn't even fucking notice that he didn't go to school anymore for at least a couple of months and that he failed his graduation which did not leave him with a chance to go to university or learn anything useful afterwards. He was absolutely desperate because german law did not allow him to take a second chance and try to graduate again, instead he was left with no graduation at all... counter-strike MUST have been the reason...

I think in most if not all cases, one of the main goals is to see what caused it. I don't question whether warning signs gets missed--of course they do. But the goal of an investigation is to find motive, reason for an act. There will be changes made because of this mainly in the way of probably heightened security and awareness on campuses. The man's not even from the United States, if the latest reports are correct(so "society" unless you mean more like "humanity" probably didn't play much role). He apparently recently came here from China (again, according to what I heard most recently).. didn't say if he was a student here or whatever.

I doubt gun legality made him do it quite frankly. Though I'm entirely against private ownership of guns, it just doesn't make someone kill. Something did, and the investigation will bring out what that is.
