Hi

Because of bad onboard wifi on my Pandora I have bought a couple of usb wifi dongles. They all work a lot better than the onboard chip, but still I am having connection issues.
For streaming video (with Kodi and UMS) I need a stable connection or a connection that reconnects immediately. I already bought a wifi repeater to be sure the signal is strong enough.

When connection fails it usually stops and doesn't seem to try to reconnect and if it does it seems to hang in the reconnect phase without ever reconnecting.
I then need to disable USB-host or even pull out the usb wifi dongle and try again.

So my question is - is there any method to improve connection reliability.
OS: SuperZaxxon 1.75 update 2 (just updated it to update 5.. maybe this update helps with this issue)

Well, it can mean the drivers are unstable.
Before you plug in your wifi dongle (open a xterm as root):

lsmod > /media/sdcard/before.txt

plug it in, enable usb, and then:

lsmod > /media/sdcard/after.txt

Now see what driver it loaded:

diff /media/sdcard/before.txt /media/sdcard/after.txt

for example "twl4030", you then reload the module into the kernel:

rmmod twl4030 ; modprobe twl4030

Now, to make it automatic, you will need a program that monitors the connection and does de reconnecting. Can not find one now...

but you could:

1. tail the log and act when a certain string is found.
2. each 1 minute to a "iwlist scan" and somehow detect the error is present and act
3. run a program as root that waits until fifo input is given (very efficient), and have a desktop program that writes something to that pipe (in userspace), and then the program acts...

Do you have a "iwlist scan" when healthy and when unhealthy?

For Kodi and UMS streaming via Wifi, I had to force the bitrate to 20Mbit I shared my configuration on this post:

https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/threads/port-requests-no-source-no-port.73589/page-84#post-1388810

I am using your configuration, if connection is made it works great :)
After the update of SuperZaxxon I could stream video for almost an hour from various rooms in my house. Connection strength fine too. But then connection failed again.

Now it wouldn't be that bad if the network was automatically reconnected and the video would be resumed, but the videos (mp4 format) played through ums cannot be fast forwarded and I don't think there is a 'goto' option as well. UMS even continues streaming the video without having a recipient.
After reconnecting you need to start the whole video over again or it resumes from different position than it should...

@FBnil thx will check later and report back.

A bit later than I thought.... but anyway I tried again today, streamed for 30 minutes and had the same issue.

@FBnil

My dongle is an edimax ew 7811un and it uses module 8192cu and that seems to be correct.
Added and removed the module and that works as expected.

I am now installing Kodi on my Android tablet to check if the table has the same issue to rule out that the problem is in the router settings.

!Disable power management!

from: https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/1342

EDIMAX EW-7811UN.... That's using rtl8188cus chipset, IIRC.
If you haven't already got one, create /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf, with content....

options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0

and another user:

What I'm doing at the moment (gentoo install) is the following at bootup to disable the power saving on the wifi card

iw wlan0 set power_save off

Thanks! Disabled power management by doing:

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
added line: wireless-power off

iwconfig -> Power Management off

The tablets connection was very stable btw. Didn't disconnect during active streaming (appr. 2 hours). The connection was still active and I could resume streaming this morning after having it connected during the night.
So I am pretty sure the modem isn't the culprit.

Will test the connection later today with power management off.
[doublepost=1482931685,1482914972][/doublepost]With power management off my Pandora was disconnected after 35 minutes of streaming. I closed kodi, tried to reconnect to the wifi network and that failed. Then removed module 8192cu, added it and tried again. Still connection couldn't be made (wireless connections are visible but wireless connection icon keeps spinning without connecting, once failing and asking for a password).
Removed the USB dongle - plugged it in and tried again, that finally caused the wifi network to re-connect.
