Hi,

Now that hotfix II is launched, would a good soul make a video of PDF reading, please? This is one of my main interests with the Pandora, but I still don't know if the text will be too small or if I'll have to scroll left-right all the time (which can be a pain).

Thank you! :)

I could make a small vid but it takes 2 hours for me to upload 3 mins worth of video, so you will have to wait for a bit...Would a couple of photos be a good substitute?

Edit: Heres a couple of pics:

Thank you Sarlix, much appreciated! :)

In fact, I'm suprised to see that this PDF reader rearranges the text, so it always fits the whole window. This is quite nice actually, but I don't know how it behaves with PDF having a fixed layout for diagram presentations, for example.

(Ok, while typing this, I just discovered the "Reflow" option in Acrobat reader, doh! )

Ok so if the Pandora reader can do reflow too, I think this is definitely a viable option for reading PDF documents, especially since the screen looks pretty sharp.

Thanks again!

^Your welcome :)

I couldn't find a "Reflow" option anywhere. There is a full screen mode and also a presentation mode.

I don't know what you meant by "fixed layout for diagram presentations" but it displays pdf's that have images just as well.

It's going to take people awhile to get used to the idea that the Pandora, while being a handheld device behaves in a very desktop way when dealing with documents.

This isn't like opening some PDF document on a PDA or Phone. They have to clobber to formatting to make it fit because of their low resolution screens. The Pandora gives you a full desktop interface, and renders the PDF in exactly the same way as it was intended (ie, exactly like it is on your desktop computer). Reflow is not needed. Your diagrams and fixed layout PDFs will render just fine.

Well, basically I encountered 3 types of PDF documents: full text, full text with embedded pictures, and fully graphic (i.e. each page is more or less a graphical scan of the page, so it's not text per se, but more a succession of pictures, each in one page). By default, with Acrobat reader on Windows, the text is displayed in the same way as the original document. So when your window is too small, you have to scroll it left and right to read each line (which is a pain). This is what currently happens on my PSP too when I try to read a PDF on it.
When I saw that the PDF reader on the Pandora was doing text reflow (i.e. each line is always displayed fully, no matter the zoom and window size, forcing word wraps when appropriate), I began to suspect that Acrobat reader was able to do the same, that's how I discovered the Reflow option in it ;)

So by fixed layout, I was more meaning documents which are fully graphic. With the "Reflow" option, Acrobat reader zooms the pictures so they are fully displayed in the window. I suppose the Pandora viewer will do the same...

Anyway. This behaviour is just perfect for me, and I can't wait to read my books on the Pandora! :)

If you want to check out some high quality magazines and try the presentation mode in the PDF reader, you can download one of these for free.
Tried them on Ubuntu and they work quite well but failed to show the in-bedded videos that use Flash Player 10. Clicking on a web link didn't open the browser either for some reason?

They'll give you something new to read if nothing else :)

Ha thank you Tripmonkey, that's exactly what I was meaning by "fixed layout"! I'd love to see one of those magazines displayed on the Pandora, and if they are readable at all on such a tiny screen. :)

I'm curious how well .cbr files will display on pandora. I wonder if theres a comic book reader in the Angstrom repo...hmm...I think I'll take a look.

Just tried it with evince on my linux box in a 800 picel wide window. a DIN A4 (almost US Letter) can be view good. Considering the high DPI of the Pandora, I bett it loks perfect on it. However, what about two column stuff like research papers? I bet alot of scrolling is involved, unless it can display one page in vertical mode. Can i see a pic of it?

Here is one I searched with google:

http://www-hydra.stanford.edu/publications/JVM02.pdf

EDIT: On my 112DPI screen it looks kinda small and and unreadable. I wonder how it looks on the Pandora.
I am talking about displaying a DIN A4 page in vertical mode in a zoom level that a whole column is viewable at once.

I've seen comic books being read on the Nokia N800 and they looked pretty sweet. They should be lush on the Pandora from what I've seen of the screen :)

You might be able to download Comix from the repo?

Since we are talking about PDFs, could anyone download the rules for my card game and take a photo of it on their Pandora? View it in full width, the pages are meant to be folded so they are quite long.

The game is currently in print and is published by Z-Man Games. Due to be released in August.

@Tripmonkey

I looked in the repo and they don't have comix or any other comic book reader :( Thanks for the link though.
