The Universe in a Nutshell

The Detailed Universe video, listed above ... reminds me a lot of this one; Powers Of Ten.

I prefer this one though as has some good voiceover detailing it.

If not seen it you definitely should IMO, one of those unforgettable clips. Nice SFX too :)

'Breaking News' - First direct evidence of cosmic inflation detected

http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2014-05

(Site is being hammered atm, may need a few retries)

Researchers from the BICEP2 collaboration today announced the first direct evidence for this cosmic inflation. Their data also represent the first images of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time. These waves have been described as the "first tremors of the Big Bang." Finally, the data confirm a deep connection between quantum mechanics and general relativity.
Nobel prizes already being talked of, though apparently it could take a further 3 years of review.

The makers of the new 'Cosmos' TV series must be fuming this came just after they completed!

Edit - it's appearing everywhere now:

Man this whole thread is heavy mental like Killah Priest
Haha, you made my day with this post (never mind it`s over a year old, I`m sure in one of the 11 dimensions it does not matter, becuz everything is NOW. Or something :)

I don` t always agree with KP, but he drops some mindbogglingly clever verses sometime. This one from B.I.B.L.E. stayed with me for over a decade and applies so often:

"And too much knowledge, it might break up the rhyme

I did it anyway just to wake up the mind"

Yeah. So much knowledge, it breaks up my mind. But it`s worth it all the same.

So now, it`s all about the Smoking Gun, the Big Bada Bang one. That`s great, same like finding Higgs Boson, but to tell the truth, I want something more...exciting found in my lifetime. These two are incredible discoveries, but also proofs of things that we sort of already knew. I want anti-gravity, ETs, unknown particles that demolish modern physics, reports from inside black holes...that kinda stuff. Surely not asking much? ;)

:)

I'd like the ET confirmation too, but not just microscopic things whizzing around in water, something bigger... But not Earth threatening of course

unknown particles that demolish modern physics
Haven't you got enough of those in quantum physics?
Total layman, so not sure. Have we? I was more fantasizing about some pesky Standard Model breaking thingy. Tbh, was even bit disappointed when they "found" the Higgs (though of course I`m rather awed too).

This reminds me of the big tabloid scare from the LHC start-up time (black holes eat up poor Earth etc) and this lil` counter-website somebody set up : http://www.hasthelhcdestroyedtheearth.com/

:)

I know what you mean, but frankly, I`d settle even for the microbes (would shut up militant zealots. Or, maybe not. They`d explain it somehow too) and as for the nasty ones well...reminds me of that old quote I quite liked:

"... when you stop to think that we're all God's children, wherever we may live in the world, I couldn't help but say to him, just think how easy his task and mine might be in these meetings that we held if suddenly there was a threat to this world from some other species from another planet outside in the universe. We'd forget all the little local differences that we have between our countries and we would find out once and for all that we really are all human beings here on this earth together"
Damn, when I looked it up, turns up Ronald Reagan said that. Oh, the irony ;)
