This is a survey from BoilingSteam (the other website I animate on top of pandoralive), and it's aimed at better understanding the Linux gamers. It's probably not appropriate for you to answer if you don't play at all on Linux x86 machines (i.e. if you are only a Pandora gamer but not desktop linux gamer), otherwise you are welcome to participate!

Note that the open Pandora is included in the choice of machines used for gaming, so it's also a nice chance for you to speak out and show that you exist :)

The link is here :

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1GL7KlCiCmhHAOfFQJ22nQ5XYGBBfhQ-0hwS_jdg1j90/viewform?usp=send_form

Before I get complaints:

- yes this uses Google Forms again. Don't answer if this is an existential issue for you.

Thanks to all who can participate!

Sorry for any long or confusing answers I gave.  I expect your analysis to be completed by the end of July (of this year). :p :)

I will be a Linux gamer in the future, because I intend to relegate this x86 desktop to a casual media consumption device.

My decision to learn Pyhton has also motivated me to wean myself off Windows.

Don't get too excited, as this is likely going to be a long process... I work too hard as a crafter to allocate sufficient time + energy for computer related stuff. A fact I am not happy about, and am working to change.

When the Pyra is out, I am going to *make it* my primary computing device.
What better computer for a crafting Gypsy that's always busy and often on the road.

Sometime down the line I may or may not get a lightweight x86 laptop that WILL NOT have windows installed... not even dual boot.

My intention is to reach a stage where I can construct a system that *only* has software I trust, and performs *only* the functions that I determine for it.

I'm sick of big corporations dictating how I use my computing devices... and doing things I am unaware of or didn't ask for.
but that's not their fault it's mine. Hooray for me finally manning up.

Hmm. On that note... there is probably no reason I can't dual boot Linux on this machine.
I just need to buy another hard drive...  after the mid year festivals.

Long story short: Sorry I can't help with the survey.  ^_^

FaeMinx, unless you are planning on installing a lot of stuff, are you sure you really need another HDD to dual boot?  I don't know what capacity your current one is, or how much stuff you have.  The way I do it is keep the laptop HDD for installed software and files I am working on, and everything else is stored on external drives.

You might be able to save some space by uninstalling some of your Windows software.  This has the added benefit of not giving you a reason to boot Windows (of course, you could just boot it and reinstall whatever it was you wanted to use instead of checking repos and such).

At present  i have 2 x 1Tb external drives. Both Full.

Then inside the Tower I have a 3Tb that has 0.98gb free space left.

An old 80gb with about 9gb free.

And the system drive which is 297gb with 58gb free...

I could certainly free up maybe about 100gb from duplicate or redundant files, but that would require me spending a day just doing that. No time. For now.

Won't participate because you know, but did you already consider surveymonkey.com for such a task ?

You need to stop downloading all that HD porn. :p

It seems odd to me that people can so easily fill up HDDs.  I have a few TBs worth of drives, old and new, and that includes all my backups.  I don't think any are at more than maybe 75% capacity.  I could probably eliminate about half of it (back ups of videos), and even more if I just get rid of stuff I don't care about.  I don't really do digital photography or home movies, and most things I type are text files, so I am not generating much new stuff myself, and I don't download much.

You might want to avoid filling them to capacity.  Things can get a bit messy.  Until you get another HDD you can use a thumb drive.  I don't know what kind of games you like or if you will have problems playing them from it, but you can play with Linux which is just as fun.

Yeah, and I have already said it sucked bad compared to Google Forms. I am not going to use inferior solutions.

Btw, I removed the need to log in into the Google account to answer the survey, so this may alleviate some of your concerns I guess?

Done, but so many Steam questions, that it seemed to come from a Steam agent.

I shouldn't be surprised since for some reason most people seem to use and support Steam, so it's always the main focus.

With good reason: where other companies are shying away from Linux (even Humble Bundle is pushing more Windows AAA titles it seems, recently) Steam is intent on cramming Linux down everyone's throats.

I have to admit, that supporting Linux is the only positive thing I know about Steam although I really don't understand why the biggest DRM provider has an urge to support the only current DRM free OS, maybe SteamOS-Linux will be full of it again, who knows.

GoG really struggles when it comes to licenses for Linux packages and certain language versions and Humble is a gamble anyway although most indie games I'm interested in are available at HB for Linux.

What did you expect ? The sites name is "boilingsteam" and from a quick glance (which may be wrong) its not really about linux gaming, but Steam gaming- which is why this is rather irritating to me as this should not be called linux gaming but steam gaming as the plattform Steam is far more important then the OS its running on.

Its windows that imposes unfair policies on steam
Could you explain that further ?

It is about Linux Gaming. (check the subtitles on the site!) - BoilingSteam does not cover anything windows-related.

ALl questions revolve around Steam/Linux and not Steam in general.

It's not the only current DRM Free OS. You never heard of Haiku, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, AROS ?

maybe SteamOS-Linux will be full of it again, who knows.
Steam is mostly a DRM-delivery system. So yes, it's full of it in the Steam client, but you are aware of that right?

Linux gaming would have never exploded in the way it has in the past 2 years without Valve. Let's give credit where it is due.
