Found a bug I think. I was playing Parachute, and it was only black and white, I think it may be the PAL version of the rom which was standard. I downloaded a NTSC version of the same rom, and now it plays in color. I remember the 2600 having the B/W - COLOR selector, and it could be either a problem with that or a problem with PAL. Both were .bin roms if that helps at all.

Stella does have a control that acts as the B/W or Color switch, but I don't have that mapped on the keys at the moment. Stella also has an option that allows it to play NTSC or PAL, but again, I don't have that mapped. I think that will be part of a future build with an "option + button" kinda setup. Thank you for making me aware of that.

Also, how's the speed looking? Has anyone noticed any appreciable slow downs?

Nope, I haven't noticed any slow downs. Seems plenty fast to me. Also, it has played every rom that I have thrown at it without problem or complaint.

After playing games like Crystal Castles and Boxing, I've noticed that the diagonals aren't working. This makes it very hard to play a lot of games b/c you can only go up/down left/right and not diagonal.

So far this is great though, so nice to see 2600 on a handheld!

Yeah, the code didn't lend itself easily to digital diagonals but it will be in the next build.

Oh, probably about 600mb or so. I unpacked the tar with winzip, should that matter? Trying 7zip right now.

I recommend Ark or the command-line tar and gzip... but I'm on linux.
Weird.

Ah ha! I used 7zip and unpacked it, and it works now. Evidently winzip isn't all that great at unpacking tar.gz files. It unpacked it fine, but maybe it messed up the binary or something... I don't know. Working fine now.

Note to all those on windows, don't use winzip to upanck

Thanks again Zansatsu!
I prefer 7zip over winrar and winzip but Im on linux now so yeah

7zip is available for Linux.

Well, no matter what I can't get this thing to run .... black screen.

I tried unpacking it wth 7zip, winrar, winzip. Nada. Here's the wierdest thing:

If I download it using Firefox, it corrupts the .zip ...
If I d/l it using IE, the .zip is fine, but I get a black screen.

Oh well ..

*goes and plays MAME Tempest instead*

I assume you've tried everything in this forum. Hmm.... what firmware version do you have and what libraries/utils do you have installed?

it's a port of p7zip - command line only, I was more saying I like the GUI portion

Just thought I'd ask in case any progs might be conflicting... as doubtful as that is. Hmm... so you have free space on your SD? 7mb executable? The whole nine yards?

If you answer yes to all of those questions, then I am stumped. What is your folder structure like?

Over 400MB still free
7MB executable
.. 9 yards ;)

folders are as follows:

stella/roms

All the needed files are in "stella", and all the roms are in "roms".

Here's a question: s there a limit to how many roms I can have in the directory? ... I put every game avalable in there .... several hundred, actually ...

No, it's not command-line only. If you have p7zip installed, FileRoller will support your 7z archives. You have to open them explicitly through FileRoller's Open dialog, but they do work.

Ping! There's the problem. In an earlier post, someone found the limit of the loader to be low... he estimated under 256 roms. Unfortunately, I used the loader as-is so I inherited the bugs associated with it on top of any in the port. Lower the ammount of roms to less than 256 (I only put the ones I like anyway) and see what happens.

that didn't work for me, but Im assuming the long pause is reading all of the avalible roms ;)

so cut it down, I mean do you really need like 2000 VCS roms?

Several hundred may be too much, I can say that it works fine with 140 though. It sounds like there is still a problem with the unzipping, as it sounds exactly the same as my problem. The only difference being that 7zip worked for me. Anyway we can get a standard zip or rar instead of a tar? Seems to be problematic for some, myself included.

TelcoLou's problem was most likely caused by an overload of roms, not the archive. Tar.gz is a reliable format and unless I get many more complaints (more than two), the archive stays tar.gz. :p

Actually, it was the archive ... I had to manually copy the needed files using 7zip (i still get an error when I tried to extract them)

All is well, and thanks a bunch :D
