Azure - Mame is now awesome, you need to try it man. Where have you been? All hell has been optimised out of it.

I concur. MAME is runnig really well now. Turf Masters Golf looks great.

Since when?

Genesis- Perfect
It's this kind of overhyping that really winds me up. I bought my GP2X pretty much just to have Genesis/Megadrive on the go, after hearing that emulation was 'perfect'.

Then I find that loads of games have graphics glitching and/or missing layers...
Plus the emulator hasn't been updated in 5 months, nor is the source available, so it's not looking good that these problems will be fixed. :(

In future can we be more honest in our appraisals? 'Perfect' is not 90% of games working correctly!
Thank you. B)

In terms of the machine itself, the new firmware is a great improvement on the previous versions - boot times in particularly are much reduced. Battery life from quality rechargeables is more than decent (about 5 hours).

I'd say that the hardware is now stable and working well, so it's really whether the software you're looking for is developed enough for you to be happy with a purchase.

Cheers.

Quick Review

Gameboy- Perfect
Nes- Perfect (I heard there are some speed issues with fishynes i didn't notice any though)

Not exactly. GNUboy has one problem I can find, in that it doesn't support SRAM saves (a minor problem, since it does have savestates, but still annoying). Haven't found anything that isn't play=compatible though.

Fishynes has problems with a lot of games that split the screen between the "action frame" and a "status bar." For instance, StarTropics, Wizards and Warriors I-III, and Ninja Gaiden. (It also doesn't support SRAM or savestates.)

If those problems get fixed, then we will be in for some sweet sweet oldskoolin'. ;)

WTF....DRMD is awesome! Yes, there are some games that do not work perfectly, but most do.

I have problems with:

wonderboy 5
NHL hockey series (not full screen)
Herzog Zwei
Fatal Rewind

Apart from that, most of the games I have played have been great, and when you consider how many games are available (a few hundred) I would say that makes it a damn good emulator.

Exactly... it's a damn good emulator, but not a perfect emulator as people have been saying.

I wouldn't have bought a GP2X if I'd been told it was just a 'damn good' emulator, but people here told me that it was 'perfect', when it clearly isn't - especially annoying as it doesn't look like the problems will be fixed.

A: "Perfect emulation" of anything is pretty difficult. If it works, in my opinion, thats good enough for me.

B: Link of ultimate fun

SMW @ 240Mhz FS0. I can play it :D.

The hax version that reesy did worked really well on FW1.4, but 2.0 seems to have broken it.

Though, this video doesnt show anything more that craigx's does. Except that I'm rubbish with a camera, and that I'm useless at SMW!

um yeah, Reesy does update his emulator, that is how it got to be at version 4.3 like it is now.

You obviously didn't read enough appraisals, I have read plenty *cough* DaveC *cough* that are unbiased enough to trust completely, no matter what the response is to the truth.

I suppose if there is anyone to be  at it is yourself for not reading the reviews done by the trustworthy people.

I don't know I would trust people who say anything is perfect, seems niave to me.

I notice that hardly any (make that none) of the PC emulators is "Perfect" what led you to believe that a little obscure gaming handheld from Korea could do what Thousands of PC coders can't.

The emulation is Damn Good, and it is free software, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

PS, if you want gameplay, not graphics, try Frodo and Atari800, one of them is bundled with Lode Runner, a real game.

I'm aware of that  but...
'Version 4.3' includes GP32 updates - there's only been one GP2X 'port' version and one minor bugfix to that. Nothing since for 5 months, hence my concern.

I actually started a topic asking people their opinion of the emulator (which DaveC posted in), as at the time there weren't any other resources to trust.

The GP2X can code its own programs? Now who's overhyping it? :D
I wasn't criticising the emulator, go and read my post properly.

Games with FS2 are very playable. You cannot really see the choppiness unless that's what you specifically focus on, instead of the fun and the gameplay.

Well, this is a forum full of GP2X fanboys. If you ask for an opinion on whether a console is good or not on a forum that is pretty much dedicated to it, you should take into account that there will be a little bias in there. At least DaveC tries to be fairly comprehensive.

I did take bias into account, but you must agree there's a fair difference between 'perfect' and 'very good'! ;)

I watch them :p

Trickytree, why do you need *perfect* Genesis emulation if you aren't even going to play a majority of Genesis games.

yeah good point. I guess I'll have to come back her and ask the same question in 4 months LOL

I do notice is the fanboys here are willing to take faults of the gp2x up the arse with no problem.
and they do make thing seems less of a problem than it is... especially with the batterylife..

one thing that pisses me off is in the beginning. the gp2x rated batterylife as 8 hours on standard AA. . and people are getting like 1 hour out of it.

one reason I don't like to OC the unit to run emu faster is
1- it might not be stable
2- it drains battery life..
sure you can carry extra batteries they said. but I don't want to have a bunch of battery in my pockets.
sure u can get high capacility battery they said.. but that's adding more to the cost of the unit. as I have plenty of 2000mah battery around already
sure you can use a ac adaptor.. worst than carrying battery in my pockets. and if I use it to play at home. I might as well use my PC with near perfect emulators

Just one question, is the GP2X capable of getting a full speed SNES emulator with sound or is that just a pipedream?

Possible? Yeah probably. Will it happen? Who knows.

SNES is one that takes massive amounts of optimisation to be good. It would take alot of dedication, time and hard work to do it. Most developers give up half way in developement because of the difficulty and time required so who knows.
