Unfortunately I have no idea. I've tried phoning him today but his phone's off. I'll have to try and catch up with him in work next week.

Unless he might check to see what's happening this topic. So Baz, of you're reading this thread, you could let everyone know.

Squidge, do you think it might be fixable looking at the pic?

Looks fixable, two of the capacitors on the right of the coil are fried. It´s easily possible to change those, but you can never know if some chip got damaged too in the process.
 
Well, without a schematic, it's difficult to tell. Depends what those capacitors were for. If they were smoothing caps, they probably popped due to too high a voltage and fried something else as well. Only thing you can do is replace them and see what doesn't work.
