@EvilDragon sorry about bumping this, but I am wondering about some things related to it.

If there are not enough US preorders are there alternate plans? Are you considering buying a smaller quantity from a company like the one above, will we have to wait until you get enough people willing to buy one, or will you cancel the US 4G model?

Or maybe we just need to pay more...

My suggestion was to charge the excess for those willing with the promise of a voucher when the remaining stock is all gone.
So if it costs $100 per chip, he needs to buy 500 but only sells 100, he still has 400 he can sell at a later date. Charge $500 each for these and promise a $400 voucher when the remainder are sold.

I can't honestly see many people jumping for that offer. Pay ~1100EUR up front for a device that people in the EU can buy for ~700EUR with the promise of maybe getting a $400 voucher later? Or just say sod it for the 4G spec and go for a ~500EUR standard edition? I guess for a lot of people a $400 voucher isn't really worth $400 until you've spent it on something too.

I'm still not sure which version is best for Canada. I just got the US one.

What would be your alternative suggestion if he can't get them in lower quantities?
Yes, that's the one you need. It'll be compatible with all major (and most minor) carriers.

Well, hopefully this reseller will sell chips for less than $400, and assuming they're reputable then ED could buy through them and inflate the price less. If that doesn't work out then sure, your solution might be best, but I'd expect most people to opt for a SE unit, assuming a significant number don't just ask for their money back for being messed around.

I'm sure he'll talk to them, he has no reason not to.

Assuming it will be possible to sell at least 500 units of the standard, EU, and US versions each within the near future, a fallback plan could look like this: The preorder is already close to have gathered enough money to buy parts for and build 500 EU units and 500 standard units (the 750 unit goal). When the ~500 preorderd units of these have been sold to the respective preorderes (roughly equalling another 250 US preorders) there should be enough money to buy parts for and build 500 US units. One downside would be that US customers have to wait longer for the modem version (two months?), but could go for a standard version first and do a board upgrade later. While this also gives ED additional units of each version to sell from stock, the profits will probably only be enough to finance small (500 unit) production runs or even require another round of preorders.

*sigh* Why is it that people on the americas always end up having to wait longer? :(

I do agree that some kind of time shifting seems to be the solution until a stock of units of each version happens.

Oh jeeze. I didn't realize that the 750 goal only concerned EU and Standard units. I can appreciate why, but dammit, there goes my enthusiasm.

Well EvilDragon sanctioned the tracker page linked below, it's not claiming the 750 Goal only concerned EU and Standard units.

Well I still don't think we should completely discount this reseller, they seem reputable and I would hope ED would use them, especially as it looks like he may not get enough preorders even for an EU mobile version without using them.

Since that is the top selling model I don't think he would have much trouble selling the other 200 or so from stock.

Probably not, but he can't really leave the US customers in the lurch either.

He could do a test purchase for the US prototype(s), and if everything works out he could could buy 111 or so from them for the preordered US ones, and as he has money assemble a few more US ones at a time to send to Link.

This is what I'm hoping for. When he has time, I hope he'll weigh in on this.

I don't think he actually has to sell a minimum number of US models during the pre-order period to go ahead with the order, he just needs to make enough money to cover production costs which include enough EU chips to cover all the EU orders and the minimum order of US Chips. Whether that money initially comes specifically from US orders isn't really important, as long as he can ultimately sell them all.

True, however I don't think he will just want those modules sitting around unused. To prevent that he would need to make those boards, which adds cost, and if he assembles full units those will also just sit around. The cost for 400 unpaid for US units is a bit much to be covered by everyone else, especially if he needs to get 750 preorders to pay for a first batch of 1000. The numbers just don't work, and I am not even looking at the finances. That is why I asked the questions.

    Is ED even reading this?
