Lucien is a traveling warrior in the country of Dílan. Over his travels he has helped many people and fought many monsters. After getting lost in a blizzard, he makes his way to the town of Snowval.
While stumbling through the snow, he discovers someone collapsed in the road buried in the snow. Lucien bends over the old man to see if his is alive or dead. After waking the old man, the man tells him that he is a traveling merchant and that during the blizzard, he was attacked by a Werebear. The merchant asks Lucien to hunt the beast down, and the governor of Snowval would reward him.
Several hours later, Lucien has arrived at Snowval and proceeds to the inn. In the inn he asks the owner if anyone has seen a Werebear, and the owner says to go and talk to Noir. The owner says Noir had fought a Werebear recently, and he could be found drinking in the guardhouse. After arriving a the guardhouse, Lucien enters and asks Noir where the Werebear is. Noir says that he doesn't know, only that he fought it several miles to the north. The Werebear has brown fur and sheds like crazy. Lucien decides to go north and follow the fur.
After going north Lucien starts to think that following the fur was a terrible idea. With the recent blizzard, there isn't any fur where Noir said he had fought the Werebear. It turns out that he didn't need to look very hard. While walking on the road, he notices a lot of smashed bottles half buried in the snow and a path cleared by something big and furry in the snow. He decides to follow the path cleared through the snow and comes to a old abandoned mine.
After walking down the mine shaft, Lucien finds himself in a cavern, and notices Noir standing in the center of it holding a runic Werebear statue. Noir is surrounded by what seems to be the belongings (most of which are weapons, armor, coins, and alcohol of the people who were attacked by the Werebear.. Noir tells Lucien that he isn't just going to let someone ruin his plans by killing the Werebear. Noir threw the statue into the air, and it started to glow and smoke. Without wasting anytime, Lucien ran up to Noir, and knocked him out with a quick boot to the head. The magic Werebear statue stopped glowing, and Lucien decided to do what any well trained magician would do. So he threw Noir at it to see if it was going to do anything other than sit there. After grabbing a couple drinks for the road, he tied the statue and Noir to his back, and went back to Snowval.
After sharing the drinks with the guards, and telling them what he found, they advised him to go to the governor for his reward. The governor told Lucien that he would give him 100 gold coins as his reward for catching Noir. Lucien asked him what he should do with the statue. The governor told him that statues like these are made by pouring an immense amount of magic into the statue, and creating a spirit that then lives trapped inside of the statue, forced to do the bidding of its owner. The governor said that the spirit can be released by simply breaking the statue. Lucien decides to break the statue, and release whatever harmless spirit, or horrible demon that is trapped inside. The governor kindly asked that Lucien release the spirit outside, he doesn't want to spend the next hour with the smell of smoke in his office. Lucien went outside, smashed the statue, and release the spirit inside. The spirit is a slightly glowy white cat with aurora-like eyes.
After spending the night in the inn, and drinking 27 mugs of beer in a drinking contest with the guards, and losing horribly to Tom, who drank 43 beers before collapsing into a deep but drunken sleep. Lucien decides to leave, and continue on to Solloft to get a quicker ride south, with his new cat/spirit friend sleeping on his head while he walked the 100 miles at a brisk pace.
