Pyra Media Coverage

Oh dear... sorry guys :( I just intended it as a joke. Please take this political crap to another thread.

I like this colour.

That does look damn good, but I'd advise against taking being ignored on IRC as confirmation of anything (other than the grumpiness of some of the IRC crowd ;)

Heh. But seriously, I wasn't ignored, everyone loves it.

In all seriousness - does anyone disagree that it's superior to jet black? I'm prepared to be proven wrong here, but I think it's more interesting (and professional-looking), yet still provides an option for those who don't want violent colors.

Did no one see the transparent one? (I will add a picture...)

It would be a nice tool to call attention if on a big display on a booth at some festival/meeting fest and it is a bit interactive.
May be even an exploded one here would look crazy!

edit: I tried to export animations (a part from the spinning one) but it seems it is going to be a tough fight on FBX format to make it happen. Sketchfab is probably easier to tame from the likes of Blender.

Btw, what episode was that equipment Geordi is holding and grinning over used in? The uniform places it in the mid to late part of the series. I can't identify it off the top of my head.. It kinda looks like a few pieces of equipment, and he is supposed to be working on the big thing with whatever he is holding in his right hand. Maybe he is holding them both because of the idiotic design of that work bench, but he could just turn a little and set it down.

If he isn't repairing something it kinda looks like the piece he is holding in his right hand could be a joystick type thing. Maybe it is used to control one of the flying/hovering things they sometimes showed. This makes me think of the exocomps, so maybe I will start with that episode.

I'm pretty sure I saw that episode recently but I can't place it. Me having seen it recently though probably places it in either mid-late season 4, or early season 5.

I too liken the Pyra more to a Tricorder than a PADD. Even going so far as to label my Pandora "TR-590". [bat'leth slash]
It is a bit of both.
I am still not clear on the actual purpose of PADDs. Based on how they are used on screen I assume it is somewhat like tablets are currently used, but they seem to do a little more at times. For the most part they seem to be used as, uh...personal displays...but what I mean is they give system status info and maybe aces to reference materials, so sorta like an ebook reader.

Tricorders are primarily a bundle of sensors with some minimalist user input and output. I figure the engineering PADDs are kind of a middle ground as well, perhaps with some specialty sensors and such, to avoid using tricorders for everything.

The real reason I replied to this paragraph was to say that I have a Star Trek inspired label on my Pandora (and other stuff around my house). Maybe we should move this discussion somewhere else to let everyone else enjoy the thread.

Doesn't it bother you when on the show they have a stack of PADDs or hand one to an officer to be delivered somewhere? Its funny how Star Trek got so many things about the future right (probably because their portrayal influenced the future) while at the same time getting so many little details completely wrong.
I have discussed this exact topic with someone before (he actually quoted me in a presentation). Let's handle it one part at a time.
First, the most confusing. Why, with all the technology depicted, would they need to physically give a PADD to someone else? The obvious answer is it makes the show more interesting visually, and helps keep the story moving, and it was the futuristic way of showing paperwork ata time when many people were just being exposed to computers for the first time. The in universe answer may be that it was intentionally done to avoid some of the problems associated with the level of technology they had achieved and how social interaction would have developed along with it. It is also healthy to walk around and interact with people face to face. I would rather hand someone a tablet than have most of my interaction with others be how people typically interact online. I have a personal example of this that I could provide, but rather than tell a long story, just know that keeping everyone together is also extremely beneficial, even if they don't need to be right there. I imagine the end result without little things like this to be a bunch of out of shape people (Why walk when I can transport? My food comes out of the replicator on the wall, so I am good. The only problem might be if there is only one toilet on the ship. I guess I found a new use for the holodeck.) that fall along a spectrum consisting of Reginald Barclay-types, and all the worst stereotypes of Klingons, Ferengis, and Cardassians.

Now for piles of PADDs. From a practical perspective, think of it the way people do when it comes to having multiple monitors, windows, or browser tabs. One may be enough, but if you can have more it might make things easier. The PADDs themselves are pretty much free, and you can make as many as you want, so have a bunch of manuals on some, while you use others to show system readings and status, and you have the ones where you are actually doing work. All your paperwork, work orders, logs, and reports can be on others. The videos or books you are in the middle of for recreation can be on a couple, plus you want to know what is going on with friends and family and ship events. I can think of a bunch of others. Sure, it makes for a messy work area. Some people work better like that. Obviously the bridge crew have to keep things a bit more tidy, but they seem to be focused only on the task at hand, and have everything they need to accomplish that task right in front of them.

You say that, but in the Pyra spectrum thread it was the one with the broadest appeal. I brought it up in the IRC recently and not a single person disagreed that it was superior to black. I wonder if people aren't picturing it right when they hear the words. It's more a "charcoal black".

Here it is again. I would much prefer it if the "black" one came in this color. I reckon in a head to head poll with black it would win too:

Once ED has the prototype cases in the test colors I think there should be a well thought out poll that shows top picks from those and the renders. Once we narrow it down based on pictures he can do an official one with his favorite choices or whatever.

When I think of dark grey that picture is what I have in mind. I would even be ok with something a little lighter or darker if that is what most people liked. While I do like black, I offer things that are interesting to look at. With this ThinkPad that is sitting next to me (that I wish I had started typing this on) it isn't "just black". It is a nice, matte black with rubbery texture and a slight sparkle. Black by itself is boring, as many people have said.

It is the dark grey pictured above and some of the pics of a dark red that I have a hard time deciding between. I hope whoever makes future polls includes pictures to help people make their decision.

Well I'm voting for a Socialist this presidential election, so my order is still in.
I hate politicians.

Bernie Sanders is self described "Democratic Socialist", he's honestly the sanest candidate in the race at the moment. If the Mainstream media and the Democratic National Convention wasn't creating a media blackout on any news on him people may know more about him, he's been giving Hillary Clinton a hard time, drawing crowds of tens of thousands of people at most of his rallies, yet no main stream media reports on it. He has a good chance of winning the next several states in the primaries and no one is reporting on it, the primary process is extremely rigged for Hillary, He may not make the nomination, but he's putting up a good fight.

EDIT: Blah didn't mean to bring in politics. Game on.
What I just said... I don't trust any of the major candidates. Or the minor ones. Nyarlathotep is the right man(?) for the job.

Oh Great Maker, no. erico's "black-on-black" or whatever it was called ftw.

P.S. Just finished listening to the interview with ED over at liliputing. Touched on all the right points, good show.

I think he means make that charcoal grey as the 'dark boring' colour instead of black. Personally if that and a colourful one with black shoulders came to be available, I'd have a hard time deciding!

I hate politicians.

Politicians are usually the products of the machinations that support them and help voters know (of) them.

In other words, you're shooting the messenger. I've had a hypothesis for a long time that's yet to fail me: if a politician is vile, then his/her constituents are usually much worse.

"Just following orders", huh? Got it.
I hate politicians.
I will start with them.
You can shoot whomever you think is the right person to blame.

I think he means, to paraphrase, that he'd "much prefer it if the 'black' one came in this color".

Anyway, my favorite black would actually be the closest you can get to replicating the matte black of the 2nd generation Sony Vaio P models, or, as alternative, the matte black of the Viliv N5. If I'd have to pick a grey I'd use the Sharp PC-3000/PC-3100 series palmtops as inspiration.

Funny you should ask. I have been considering learning Klingon recently. There are other constructed languages I was thinking about, but they didn't seem as useful.

Have you considered... toki pona?

I hadn't, and didn't know about it until just now. After seeing the logo and reading the first paragraph of the intro on wikipedia it seemed kinda blah. After reading the rest of the intro I like the approach used and ideas behind it (that has long been an interest of mine, however since I am monolingual I don't know how to test how language impacts thinking and perspective...at present I just mess with English in a way that resembles those ideas). I will look into it some more. It seems interesting, and my kind of thing. I was kinda looking for something to be able to play along with others, but this seems like a decent place to start to see how it works for me.
[doublepost=1462941888,1462941757][/doublepost]I can't even make my name with those letters. :(

Kill the driver. But the vehicle is still usable for another driver. And you can't just blow the vehicle up, either; there's important cargo and the people paying the driver are hidden among innocents.

We could still give way to the next intelligent, high impact species to come.
