Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

well, even just writing it out and then reading it for youtube might be a good format, while hitting buttons on it.

And here I am looking forward to actual reviews from actual people using the actual device. So far it's been mostly about, "It exists" and "keys work".

Several have said that you can make calls from it closed, etc... Nobody has yet said what the call quality is.
Several have said that you can make different LED notifications using a nifty notification tool... Nobody has said yet how it actually works and configures to the address book in Android.
Apparently there is a partitioning tool to allow dual OS on the eMMC. Can it boot from microSDXC too?
Stereo speakers on the device - but they point out to the sides from the back of the lid. Does it sound louder to the person holding it or to the person beside/behind it?
Headphone jack audio - quality? Enough power for big headphones?
Android Gaming - how is the screen refresh for animation?
Productivity - can the mouse pointer be shifted from absolute position to relative motion under Android?
US mobile phone networks. Has anyone tried it under Verizon? AT&T? US Cellular? T-Mobile?...

So many questions... Need more real people with real devices writing real reviews of their real experiences.

A number of people have received their Gemini PDA they backed on Indiegogo.

There seems to be some issues reported as per the link below. But the worst one is that a number of people have received a Gemini PDA with the wrong SOC. Instead of getting the X27, some backers got a Gemini PDA with a X25 . Not sure how you accidentally put the wrong SOC in a device

Apparently someone asked Planet Computers about it, this was their response:

"Hi David, We have investigated the issue of the processor model and we can now confirm that the current production units are powered by the X25 chip, not X27. We have alerted the factory as they have told us they would be using X27 processor instead of the X25 that was in our original specification, due to the availability of the X25 chips and similarity of the specifications. We are awaiting a full response from the factory on this issue and we will keep you updated. Regards, Robin!"

Hmmm... Bait and switch. I can totally understand being upset by things like this.

At least it looks like it was the manufacturer who did the switch and, assuming there's proper contracts in place, are the ones who will need to fix it. A very costly mistake.

Shouldn't be stuck with them if Gemini is a British firm (as I keep reading). The Consumer Rights Act should let you insist on a replacement, and if they dick you about (a legal term, I understand) then you can get a refund. Only trouble is I'm not sure how that protects people from outside the EU, but hopefully Gemini will see sense before anyone needs to take them to court.

How so though, those first 1000 backers backed it when they were saying they would get an X25 SOC.

Those first 1000 now have what could become an elusive collectors unit years from now. They have a definitive way to show that it was an 'early backers unit' simply by running a CPU check.

But - Planet Computers isn't doing the 'right' thing here. "Sorry you didn't get what we advertised to you, get bent," is not a good customer service method. They should be offering free exchanges - customer pays return shipping - for units as they are produced - after the rest of the backers get something in-hand - then resell the X25 ones that got returned as "Verified early-order collectors unit" for the same or more than the early backer price. I suspect that they would get 20-30% return rate.

Those first 1000 units were, after all, effectively the Planet Computers beta release. Conveniently there is roughly a month between batch productions to shake out those bugs found in the first 1000.

I think so too. The two devices will help each other a lot. Hopefully, all the phone stuff made available for the Gemini will also compile in 32 bit.
