Planet Computers : Gemini - Psion Returns

Maybe some Pyra users will want to try to hack in that camera module if they are made available for individual purchase.

They're listed at $49 with free shipping as an individual/discrete reward for delivery in March. It doesn't look like you would have to buy a Gemini to get one. I have no idea of what it is using for an interface/connection.

Still, if it is an off the shelf part, and it isn't too difficult to connect it (I don't it is as simple as running wires to USB connections), it might be an option for those that need a camera on their Pyra. Is it at least cheap and good enough for people to find it acceptable?

Planet put out another update. Apparently the Gemini is winning a bunch of awards at CES and is a candidate for Engadget's 'Best of CES' award. They are encouraging people to vote for them. Maybe give a bump/vote to it for pocket clamshell computing if you're so inclined?

Well, I didn't understand any of it, but he sounded impressed :D

I know where my 200Gb card out of the Win will be going!

I regularly use my iControlPads with my GPD Pocket .. terrific combination, once everything is charged and working properly .. ;)

It's time for mass production!
Dear Gemini Backers!

It's time for mass production!

We have entered the first Gemini mass production cycle.

Last weekend, we completed the first mass production of the Gemini PCBs with surface mounted components.

Here are some pictures of the surface mounting process production line from last week:

We are waiting for all the mass produced keyboards and screen modules to arrive this week.

Gemini final assembly starts at the factory on 29th of January at the factory - in less than a week!

Shipping will start soon after.

The Gemini team is going to China this weekend to oversee the mass production assembly starting next Monday.

We are making final tweaks to the firmware to be locked down this week before Friday.

Our aim is to complete the first mass production run , so that the first units are shipped out to Gemini backers before Chinese New Year.

We will send a further production update next week from China with pictures of the production line.

Best regards,

Team Gemini

I still remember when my professor got his Nokia Communicator, and (for unknown reasons) was able to respond to phone calls only by opening it, so for the entire conversation he was speaking with the keyboard :D

Finally the time has come for the same experience, after all these years !! :D

EDIT: edited because grammar police :p

Why are you referring to your professor as it?

Agreed. While "It" is a non-gender specific pronoun, it's considered bad form in many circles and tends to indicate that one does not approve of someone's assumed gender or transitional state.

Apparently some people also have problems with saying make and female. I probably have bad form as I do all of that and often use gender neutral terms where they are seemingly unnecessary.

Referring to someone as a female is bad form unless you're writing a biology textbook - the word we normally use is 'woman'.

Regarding gender neutral pronouns, I find using 'they' if the gender is unknown, of if you're just unsure gets the meaning across without offending too badly. As Dunny says the singular third person pronoun has problematic inferences when used against people, even if they're gender agnostic I find.

It is very difficult to use non gender based pronouns in English without coming off sounding like a robot.

Point well made.:p
I believe you have called it auto-destruct. ;)

The subculture I have spent most of my life in typically guess with male and female. Occasionally I slip up and use it with outsiders (or with those with the same background, but in different social settings). This is far from the worst example of bad form I use. I could go on to explain how it, surprisingly, fits to use those terms in most situations even with changing social concerns of today, as a over 20 years ago it allowed me to be open-minded enough to accept people how they intended to present themselves (something much of the Western world is still struggling with, including the subculture I made reference to), but we have stayed pretty far off topic for a bit already. Although not technically first from a biological standpoint, or even when dealing with those that don't fit the gender binary mold, it works for me most of the time. Fuck norms.

I use "they" when trying to ensure an individual's privacy (check many of my past posts). "It" seems equally accurate. Think about when someone asks about a baby. Or other animals and plants. Referring to a vehicle, ship/boat or car/truck, as "she/her" is common ("he/him" is Lee common, although not unknown...a car I inherited is a "he") yet has no sex or gender, or even thinks about itself. I have no issues being called "it", and kinda prefer it in some situations. Fuck people forcing their ways on others.

And how is that a problem? :p

Then a person should take no offense regardless of the pronouns used by others to address or describe a person as a person would not want to force their ways on others.

Getting tied up in logic loop. Reboot.
