Win 95,98, or perhaps 2000 could be ported, I think. can it?
i don't think microsoft has released its source code for windows yet.jakshep2 said:Win 95,98, or perhaps 2000 could be ported, I think. can it?

To port something to a completely different cpu architecture you require the source code. Microsoft's hardly going to give you that now are they. Not to mention there would be FAR too much work to do for something that big even if you had the source code.
If for some obscure reason you want windows your only option is a FULL pc emulator. 95/98 may work under an emulator on the pandora, but win2k's probably pushing it.
Why would you want them anyway?

It's open source so compatibility is unlikely to be an issue. I recall hearing we've got a little over 600mhz to play with. I'm guessing it'll run the slower or 2d things fine but unless there's some insane optimizations they can do we may not see decent speed for the fast action 3d dos games.
GP2X ran Bochs Win 95 which always seems to be one of the first things that someone ports to a new handheld. I don't think that you can actually do anything with it. I think that it was done more for the wow factor than anything on the less powerful handhelds. I have a feeling that geting a stripped down version of Win 95 running on a 625mhz handheld isn't going to have much wow left in it. People are going to have t think of something else. I wonder what it'll be. Personally, I'll be more impressed by the fact that I'll be able to use this thing as pretty much a full computer. EEEat your heart out. You too Cloudbook. Ours will be handheld size and probably just about as powerful when it comes to gaming.quasist said:Gp2x had Win95 working on some other Dos emulator than DosBox

This is a Pandora forum. Anyone trying to argue something else is better here will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently.... by ninjas.
I second that!! B)atomicthumbs said:hay guys we also ought to pourt some saturn games because thee pandora is so good
Yrx said:A project I've been following is ReactOS. An opensource team is reverse engineering Windows NT/XP, with a stated goal of full compatibility with Windows software. It supposedly runs incredibly fast. Also interesting is the fact that they've started a port to ARM. The current release is still in alpha stage, but it looks VERY promising.

I had no idea they'd got as far as they have - I last saw it back in 2003 or so. Hopefully they'll manage their goal of 0.5 out this year. If they actually succeed, and end up with something that does Windows stuff, but without windows instability/vulnerability, then it will be one of the most impressive things around.
I imagine ports to other archetectures probably still couldn't run anything that wasn't fully coded with dll-ed Windows APIs, though. Still, very interesting...
the reactos people had anticipated this, and they did a major audit of the code to make sure it was legal. unfortunately it put the project back a few months, but the intent is that if microsoft does try to sue them, they wont have a leg to stand on.javaJake said:I agree on the promising bit. The fact that they've even got Visual Basic 5 running as if it were in Windows native is pretty, well, sweet. If ReactOS gets into beta stage, you can bet some serious money that Microsoft will start looking into lawsuit possibilities.
