Im searching for a nice looking app for pandora, that will show a sidebar with widgets on the desktop :)
I searched for "widgets" and "gadgets" in title names on this forum and couldnt find anything so here's the thread.

I'd love the widgets i always use in windows vista, and more.

I can't see any reason why we couldn't have GDesklets. Although it is known for being a little on the RAM hungry side. Theres also aDesklets, which does a similar thing.

However I suspect they *may* rely on the composite extension, so it may be a little more than a straight recompile.

Edit: Google Gadgets is also open source.

what about screenlets? ive also been searching around.

Same again, I'm pretty sure Screenlets relies on the composite extension. So we'll have to see.

All the widget packages I've found on linux seem to be in an unloved state, buggy with no development. I'd also question how well they will play in the small resolution screen, but floating clocks, indicators and notifications would be nice if they can be done with not too much CPU.

For the panel in the xfce desktop there is a whole list of plugins:

And I have a dream... about KDE Plasma on the Pandora *drool*

No, I said these things, nothing more:
  • Enlightenment has more widgets than XFCE
  • If you switch to Enlightenment, you get access to said widgets
  • I have a dream
  • I dream that one day, I will have KDE Plasma on the Pandora

About RAM usage:
Widgets in XFCE and Enlightenment basically take up zero megabytes of RAM. They won't affect performance in the slightest, near enough.

KDE is currently not ready for the mobile platform... partly because of RAM usage, but mostly because most of the KDE UI was designed with big computers in mind... The KDE Plasma Netbook UI will hopefully change that; it already runs on Nokia N900 after all. RAM usage will not be that big of a deal, since KDE basically uses vector graphics all the way through which are very easy to cache or reduce the quality of. OpenVG and OpenGL ES 2.0 accelerated drawing also helps KDE.

When I get my Pandora I'll try to set it up so that it has two modes:
  • KDE 4.5 Netbook edition as the primary UI. I then get all of the apps I need like Konqueror for web browsing (More lightweight than Midori) and Kontact and Kopete for email/IM etc.
  • Basic X.org for games etc. I'll make a script that shuts down everything that's unimportant and just leaves me with X and the game I want to play.
