Outcast (castaway Module) Beta 005 Released

reaper -- no idea how that could be related :)

After a few 'ST reboots' the emu will stop takign input; its a bug I'm working on.. that could be it. (ie: just exit the emu and re-run it, and its fine again)

jeff

Didn't the PSP version have this problem as well at one point?

Vaguely sounds familar.

ie: I mean, up+left already does x-=2/y-=2 .. so how would the upleft switch differ?

It just now uses your current biasing mode, to be more accurate.

I will perhaps earn some criticizing but don't hassle yourself with that mouse stuff. If the gp2x's stick would have a real 16 directions (equal and not that bizarre ones as now) then it'd would be an improvement. Anyway a mouse emulation never will even half as good as real mouse or trackball. This is especially true with current gp2x's stick.

Mouse emulation is just needed for compatibility not usability.

OK, i'm a idiot - I cannot get castaway to load a game, every time i select the disk - put it in a drive - then when I try to start it says I don't have a rom image.

I've got a rom image in the same folder as the game roms ( TOS102.IMG ).

Where am i going wrong ?? Does the TOS rom have to be in upper case or lower case ??

Thanks for any help.

Just rename it to "tos.rom" using lowercase. This way works for me.

edit: And all those files should be in "roms/atari-st/" in the root directory of your SD card.

All of my CaSTaway variations have it (GP32, Palm/Zodiac, PSP, GP2x, Windows :)

I'm missing some var reinitialization during my reset; I'll be fixing it soon, for sure. I'm fed up with it ;) Its just a pain to test, since when you do a change, nmaturally the next 20 resets will all work fine .. it only occurs wen your'e not testing to see if you fixed it :)

WRONG

There are many games that use the mouse. Ever heard of Starglider?

And just because joystick control will not be as good as mouse control means we shouldn't try to get closer? Sorry but that argument doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Yes to get closer but to things what are really worth it. Emulating mouse using a joystick will never be even partially as effective as real mouse/trackball. Even analog stick is insufficient - these device are too much different on principles.

I understand that handhelds like the gp2x aren't suited for some aplications. If some games are demanding mouse input then they will never play as good.

At the end I'm not against a better mouse emulating. But there are more important things (like fixing samples, vibrating rasters, perhaps adding support for sync-scrolling, etc.) than that mouse business.

Of course I can accept different opinions - if you would like to have a better mouse emulating because you would like to play the Starglider a (tiny?) bit better then ok.

Yes but adding more directions to mouse emulation is not a huge job. It is relatively easy and could be implemented fairly quick. Those other things you mention are important, yes more important, but will take alot longer to do and be alot more work to fix. That part of your argument makes sense, just not the "can't do it perfect so why bother" part. I never said that he should do the mouse control first either. It was just something to keep in mind in case he wanted to work on control options at some point.

All pretty good :) Though menu movement, selection etc can be a bit painful due to the speed.

What would really help is a mouse acceleration modifier perhaps - and say mapping it to the left shoulder button or so. A 16 way mouse movement algorithm, if it can be implemented, would also add to the effectiveness of mousing around.

Playing something like Battlehawks 1942 works with mouse control for flight, but being able to make tight turns means being able to move the mouse faster, which I can't do at the moment ;)

Yeah 16-way mouse plus a mouse acceleration button would be a great mouse solution.

... and another small suggestion:
Possibility for a quick config change, where:

Left = Left
Right = Right
A = Fire
X = Up
B = Space

This should make Jump'n'Run games or Turrican a lot more comfortable :)

Yeah, that might work great. No more accidental jumps :)
