I noticed it earlier, though to much less of a degree, in Rayman 3D as well (but that is a slapdash port of a game so good that it's still good regardless, whereas Star Fox 64 3D was put together with the 3DS in mind, and it shows). I usually find that most polygonal platformers are rendered unplayable by the lack of being able to see perspective and the like, but it really makes a difference there, too. That sounds quite interesting. So essentially, your subconscious collision detection works better, I did not expect that. However, with it on, your natural instincts just do their work (at which point I reacted with shock, since I was so used to the N64 version), meaning that you can focus on better scores and such, because you're not cramping up your hands with endless rolling.
I'll have to give it a spin when I visit my friends with a 3DS.
As an example, Rayman 2 originally had two or three particular sections that were ludicrously difficult due to the guesswork that comes from being unable to see perspective in such games, but these are VERY easy in Rayman 3D solely because you're free to concentrate on your actual objectives instead of having to focus on guessing when to press buttons (and from having to continually start over when you guessed wrongly).
A secondary effect is that my judgement of distance and volume in real life has improved, too.
