New Zx Spectrum Fans...

Mkay. I am begining to become interested in the ZX Spectrum. But I've got a few noobish questions.

1.
http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/computers/.../zxspectrum.htm says that there are several versions of the Spectrum. Which versions are emulated now? All of them?

2.
I'd like to see more screenies - is there a page that shows some of the graphic power of the Spectrum? "World of Spectrum" has only got Titlescreens, as far as I can tell.

3.
Which games would you recomend to play in general and which of them would work well on the 6-Button GP32? Otherwise I would just work through the list at http://www.worldofspectrum.org/bestgames.html

Never fear - its all legit - they only put up games for which they have permission :)

That's not strictly true. They dont take down games to whick there are no objections. Doesn't mean that they have permission though.

Better than most emulation sites though. Also Amstrad allow the distrubition of the Spectrum roms.

Answers to points 1 and 2.

The only spectrum models not emulated are the Russian clones and the Timex US spectrum. For most games on WOS this isn't a problem.

As for playing games on the GP32, you should be find for most arcade games as they have a limited set of keys used. Flight sims and text adventures (unless you have a chatboard) would be a problem, as well as games like Elite and Lords of Midnight.

All the ones worth worrying about. :)

Basically there are only 3 different types of Spectrums:

The original 48k Spectrum with a beeper for a sound chip.
The 128k Spectrum with the AY sound chip and pageable ram banks.
The +3 Spectrum which is the same as the 128k but just has a disk drive.

@RobertJ: You forgot the 128k +2 with the tape deck (The grey one), Which was not entirely compatable with the 128 and +3 (The black one`s) game wise.

99% of ZX games had better versions on Commodore C64 - better GFX, better SFx and last but not least ... beter Music.

Sadly, Frodo still suffers from that white bar bug :((

Them's fighting words! C64 did have better sound but the graphics were often big and chunky. There are many games that are better on the Spectrum such as Bomb Jack, Jet Pac, Spy Hunter, any 3d isometric type game and Chuckie Egg.

i downloaded about 50 of the roms (first ones on download list) but none of them worked, either the spectrum is too complex for me or theyre the wrong format

I have the same problem... all I get is a screen that flashes different colours whenever I try to load a game (TZX format).

From the news item:

"Preliminary TZX tape support (only block #10 tapes)"

So your problem could be using TZXs that the program isn't compatible with at the moment.

It's played back fine all the SNA and TAP files that I've been using with Speccal.
