New 3DS/XL models incoming

Wait, "New 3DS"? Are they insane? Did they learn dick all from the whole "WiiU" marketing failure? This is the same thing all over again, consumers will see it as "3DS, only newer" when it is for all purposes an entirely new (forward compatible) system: games specifically designed for it won't be, can't be, backwards compatible. Why not call it the "3DS-2" or at least follow their previous convention and call it "3DSi", an iterative upgrade that is something different in its own right.

"New 3DS". What bull is this?
My best explanation is that they're aping the New Super Mario Bros brand naming and hoping that people will associate it that way.

I can completely understand both sides of the arguments here. Let me first say I think Iwata is an "idiot"(this is my opinion, so please, no rebuttals), and I completely agree that this is about the worst way possible to add to the 3DS line, when you have your current WiiU issues.

That being said, I really don't mind anything about the new 3DS except for the new game ONLY issue. With a faster processor and more ram, and extra button's and improved 3D, EVERY game can still be played on either machine, so that's all good. So Resident Evil can use both sticks, or you can still use it with one on the older units. Then it becomes an issue of if you want to upgrade or not, but you can still play any game, any place.

Maybe the new units menu's will run quicker, and just run better overall, but any game released can still be played between the 2DS,3DS, N3DS. But when you allow for new games to take advantage of the system, and they can't be played anywhere but on the new machine, your f***ing millions of gamers for no good reason. "N" isn't Apple, and if their trying to go down that road, good luck!

The next question is how many of these N3DS games will ever be made, and or ported to the west? Ultimately, this may never be a big issue, but it still reeks of BS.

Like I said, I'll probably get the new unit, as I want the improved 3D. But with "N" current situations, I really don't see this doing them any favors. Now, if this can be used as a WiiU tablet replacement down the road, AWESOME, but if not, they should have just left the "NEW" games buried until an entirely new handheld comes to market.

You guys get that this is just a GameCube3DS for Smash Bros, right? releasing gamecube controllers for WiiU, now releasing the gamecube c stick and extra shoulder buttons to 3DS. And quite honestly, Smash Bros will be a big enough release to warrant this.

Do whe know allready something about the Backward Compability???

To Play Monster Hunter 4 and Smash Bros on this Device would be great, but i ditnt wants to miss my good old DS Games like Chinatown Wars, Giana Sisters DS etc..
Don't see a reason why it shouldn't be backwards compatible.
Depends if Nintendo class this as a new thing, like the DSi was, or just a revision like the 3DSXL was. Since the Gameboy Micro they've only generally supported one 'gen' back - the GBM only supported GBA games and dropped Gameboy support, the DSi dropped GBA support and only ran DS and DSi games. It doesn't even have to follow hard 'gen' lines - the GBM didn't introduce a new software category, yet dropped GB support, and the late Wii revision dropped GC support while still only running Wii games.

I suppose in all of those cases the dropping of support has allowed them to drop a port or simplify a drive, except in the case of the GBM, which presumably dropped support because clunky old GB carts would have unbalanced the system. Whereas the pinout of the DS and 3DS carts are at least physically compatible. It does seem about the right timescale for them to be dropping support to me though.

Horizontal shoulder button array for the win! :D I wonder if many Nintendo fanboys will complain like some Pyra fans here about horizontal trigger desin instead of a vertical array. ;)
I do.  Fuck Nintendo!  Nintendo does it doesn't mean it's right.

After all the shit Nintendo got for not putting a second nub on the 3DS, then the avalanche of shit they got for not putting it on the XL. Then responding by launching a second nub attachment and coping shit for that.

In light of all that, the button sized nub  wins the face palm of the month award.

I so hope that the card slot will be heavily used by pirates as a punishment for this whole nub debacle, haha.

Isn't this the company that is supposedly hurting for sales or something?  I suppose some 3DS owners, or those who really want to play New 3DS only games, will buy one, but Nintendo may have wasted a bunch of time and money.  I would rather have more good games, or a completely new (in fact, not name) console than this slightly improved hardware.  If it can be used in place of a Wii U Game Pad it might get a few more sales.

I like Nintendo, but they do some really stupid stuff sometimes.

2DS/3DS/3DS XL consoles already have a SDHC card slot.

Well, the excuse "N" gave when the 3DS XL/LL first came out, was that the internals where to cramped to add another full sized nub to the right side of the unit. Based on how they have moved the stylus, converted to microSD, tells me the smaller nub of the "NEW" 3DS is about as good as it's going to get. The only thing I really don't personally like on the NEW, is the stylus placement.

Everything else has been better placed IMO. The new cart slot placement is open for debate, but the head phone jack, start/select, volume slider and power button have all been moved for the better. I have no issues with small improvements that make the overall experience better. The Vita slim did the same, and I love that unit, so I'm sure I'll like this as well.

But from the "average" consumer point of view, I just can't go along with their "NEW" game issue. So retail shelves will have 2DS, 3DSsml, 3DSXL, NEW3DSsml, NEW3DSXL, L.E. of all lineups, and then games that will only work on the NEW. What a cluster fuck of confusion this will be. Then when you take in to account the Wii, Wiisml, WiiU, WiiU deluxe, hell, I'm confused just typing this out and I live and breath this stuff.

For me, "N" wins the face palm of the decade award :p

I believe it's the same bit of hardware IBM laptops had in the middle of their keyboards. It'll feel like an IBM nub mouse most likely. I liked those.

And you know parents and grandparents will get confused, and buy their children/grandchildren the wrong one. Like the Wii instead of WiiU, or the 3DS instead of the New 3DS. Or they'll buy them a New 3DS only game when they only have a 3DS.

Those IBM nubs were ok for there purpose,  not fond of them for gaming though. Remember how with 1mm of travel it went from moving the cursor a little to full speed movement, imagine that for gaming.   But be that as it may, the other issue is that you now have 2 controllers(nubs) with different degrees of travel and action , can you imagine playing a game with two different sticks in that way . Having said all that , I'm not convinced it will be like an IBM nub, seems to be described more like a mini joystick. Will have to wait for the  reviews.

The other issue is its size and location, for someone like me with big hands , its not going to be good.  Lastly, as Jumpman highlighted, there is this issue now that games developed for it wont work  on the other older 3DS models without the second nub which causes market fragmentation.
