Mamegp- Do I Just Add Roms?

Sorry for another question, but in looking over the files here, and talking to others about GP32 performance, I realized that I don't know how Mamegp32 works.

I know Mame, and I have all the roms I want for it. So to play them on the GP32, do I have to download something other than the Mame emu itself, such as getting Mame "packs" or recoding them or something?

Or is it this simple: I download Mamegp32 from the homepage, then simply add my Mame roms right into the folder and they'll either play (like Ghosts and Goblins) or they probably won't (like MK2)?

In other words, I play Mame on my PC using just the emu and the game roms. Is that all I need once I download the GP32 version?

Thanks for any info.

That's pretty much what I did.

but there are certain roms that wont work unless you have the right versions since roms can be adjusted over time or just redumped. just check the list that comes with MAMEGP and those should generally work unless they're games that are too new to be compatible.

That's what I hoped, cool. Thanks Alpha. I guess I was hoping for Ninja Turtles and Simpsons, but I don't know how hard they are to emulate so oh well.

There are ways to try to downgrade your roms to the 0.34 fileset that mamegp uses but they don't always work and are somewhat of a pain so you might just want to put them on your SMC and see if they work. There is a list of roms that should work with mamegp included when you download it. I use it for games like dig dug and pac-man. The one game i have had a lot of trouble with (and still can't get to work although its on the list) is joust.

Thanks for the help, but that's actually what I was worried about. Some of this stuff is a little over my head. I'm a smart guy, but I'm pretty inexperienced as far as some of these methods. I was hoping that I could just save Mamegp onto my SMC and then throw all my roms into its game folder. If it's more involved than that it's not gonna kill me, but I don't really understand some of the processes I see talked about here.

I guess I should never have hoped for Ninja Turtles, Simpsons, and Mortal Kombat if Joust runs badly!!!!

Oh well, as long as it's pretty easy to understand I shouldn't have trouble, I was just hoping that I wouldn't have to have my roms changed or somehow specified to work with the GP32.

Yeah I wouldnt expect too many games past the early 80's to work I think the newest game in my collection that worked was capcom's Section Z.

Oh wow, that does go back. Okay, thanks for the heads up. Better to know ahead of time.

Its not that joust runs badly, I just can't get it to run. It won't start up when I load it. But I think I just got a bad rom because joust is on the list of (about 700) games that work with mamegp. Try playing the genesis versions of the games you mentioned using DrMD (i know they're not EXACTLY the same but they should run pretty well in DrMD and will most likely not run at all mamegp).

Yeah, unfortunately the Genesis only has MK2 out of those three, and a fairly crummy version at that. I'm pretty sick of playing it on the Nomad, but true- that's a fair compromise to wanting arcade MK2 on the go. Good luck with Joust, that's always been a favorite of mine.

If you are worried about the rom set being incompatible you can find the right 0.34 rom set put together for the gp32 if you know where to look. ;)

If you launch MAME GP32 for first time, it makes a list with available games on SMC. If you add more games after that, you have to re-generate available games list. To do this press START+SELECT in the frontend and after select the option to regen the file, (or directly delete gpmm\mamegp32\cfg\gamelist.cfg file and launch MAME again).
