 Hello peeps am a new gp user and was wondering if all arcade roms worked for mame or is there a restriction on what can be played on it? thanx in advance for your help

Well, as far as i know, there is no 'real' MAME port for the GP32... yet !!!
There are 2 in WIP status though, and i really look forward to play true
arcade roms on my favorite handheld ;)

There are som emus for GP32 that runs some arcade roms (XCade, MultiPac, and a few more i believe) .. but they are very restricted in their compatibility, and therefore can only run a little handfull of the older roms !! ...

On that note, does anyone know how fmame's coming along? Those screenshots sure looked great. :)

Franxis ( a coder from gp32spain ) want a to release a Mame emulator in March. As far as i know, Ryleh is working in fmame too... So hopefully we will have 2 mame emulators in a few months.

From what these devs have said MAME will run very slow and/or have a very high frameskip when played with audio enabled even for old stuff. Those of you that are like me and think that playing games with no sound absolutely blows, and is not worth doing should forget about MAME. The original PC code is just too bloated for it to run well.

Franxis Mame emulator is working right now about 80%-90% speed with Frame Skip 2 ( 166 mhz ) and audio enabled, and he said his emu still need a lot of work... so his emu is going very nice. I am a gp32spain user, every day i read about Franxis goals with his mame emu... so i know what im talking about.

Hi Fiu

Would you be prepared to translate an update on here each day for us non Spanish speakers?

I'd certainly be interested in the progress being made...

Yeah Fiu, updates would certainly be appreciated. I too believe that gaming with no sound does defeat the purpose a little bit, but if Franxis' Mame emulator is already 80-90% speed with the audio enabled as you say, then that certainly sounds promising.

Sure guys! Ill translate for you.

In my last post you can read the last report from Franxis. There are other things that he said some days ago ( for example, he was nearly to lose his project due to a PC hardware issue ), but there is in my last post his overall report.
Other interesting thing is that he want to show his emu in MadridSX/MadridDC Party ( a retro game party and DC party ), this party starts at March 6. One day later MadridSX party his emu will go public and then we will enjoy it ^^. He promised that, and hes working a lot and very happy in this project.
More things.... He is surprised with the compatibility.... he is talking about 100% compatibility with games ( not modern games of course. GP32 ram limit, you know. Limit would be in a 500kb zip file, that is LOADS of games ).
Classic games ( i mean Ghouls and Ghost etc... ) runs close to 100% full speed with frameskip 2 ( 166 mhz of course ) and sound enabled.
Things he needs to do?.... Well... Sound is a bit crapy at moment and theres isnt a selection menu. And there are bugs of course. Franxis has a lot of work.

Finally i post two pics (^0^)

Ill keep you all update.

sounds fantastic, but is there any news for us that don't have a GP that will go 166mhz, mine goes to 156mhz, will there be an option for clockspeed?

Hi Fiu,

Is the emulator using the C core? Is it the mame core or charles macdonalds core?

I don't know exactly how reesys z80 core works, or even if i can be put into the mame source (I know how mame calls the core, but i'm not sure how reesys does it) but it might be worth suggesting for a good speed boost.

Interesting work, i'm sure it can be brought upto speed, really looking forward to trying it.

They definately should be using an older version of mame. Most of the new versions of mame support games the gp32 couldn't possibly emulate. They could go back to about 2 years ago and use that source. That alone would probably double the speed. I know games that worked fine on a low end pentium in early versions of mame would no longer run at the right speed with the newwer versions of mame.

As according to what Fiu has said, The largest size that maybe supported is 500kb.

Trooper

I pray that we can extend abit these 500kb by desactivate sound

btw many thanks for the list Trooper :) it answers many questions I were wondering about size of Gauntlet for exemple ;p

I know it's a stupid question  , but what would be the extreme limit of game size playable on a GPMame emu????
I'm dreaming that we could reach some Mb, but damn, it's sounds crazy and impossible as far as I read things about it...

Hi Fiu,

I know his emu is based on Mame 0.34, so i think hes using mame core ( i also read something about 68k core, but im not sure about it) .

About the 166mhz thing... I really dont know anything about it, but i hope he will try to get Mame runing with something lower than 166mhz.
Other things i forgot to say... He is deleting loads of code from Mame 0.34, source code was 15mb and now its 9mb. So hes deleting all the "accesories" ( savestates, screenshots etc... ), why that? Fraxis dont wana damage our SMC, he thinks it would be dangerous.
