Mame Cabinet

I'd definately go for the Ultimarc -pac boards

You can get pretty cheap buttons w/microswitches

Doing it yourself will be a lot cheaper than buying an X-Arcade stick, and you will be able to customiz it to your needs

I started building a cab, I even managed to wrangle an old Virtua Striker cab for free from a retro-cade, but I couldnt get it home, so alas it was scrapped

I ended up just making a computer controller with the Ultimarc board, and its very comfortable, very responsive too

I don't recommend x-arcade at all. it's good, but not arcade perfect.

if you're building one yourself, wiring the buttons/joystick isn't hard at all to do, and if you're replacing the controls in an old cab, dropping in a new stick/buttons is eaaasy.
for MAME cabs, Supers(http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/super_joy.htm) are preferred i think since they're kind of a jack-of-all-trade stick.

I personally like the Competition sticks(http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/competition_joy.htm) since they're what are found in most arcade fighting game cabs.

and buttons: http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/5891xxl.htm
these happ horizontal pushbuttosn are nice and authentic stuff.

ultimarc stuff(no experience with) is good stuff too.
it's a lot cheaper to put the real arcade parts in yourself isntead of buying prebuilt control panesl like these http://www.slikstik.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=3
or even the x-arcade(although the x-arcade stuff is the cheapest).

i don't know though, it's been a long time since i looked in to the stuff and there's better info at spots like these http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm

oh yeah, how expensive was your monitor, craig?

edit:
didn't read mattmagoo's post!
what he said is right

Latest posting on UKVAC:

Hi,

I have a Space Harrier full motion arriving soon.

Is anyone interested in buying it, else it will be broken up for parts.

main game pcb is missing (motion controller pcb is present, so a pcbset
from a non-motion game will work)

The game was fully working not so long ago, but took a couple of
minutes to boot up so it has a possible psu issue like a recap of the
switcher, else the fault might have been with the pcb.

mail me XXXX@XXXX.COM

Also may have a full motion outrun available as well

I can pass on details if anybody is interested...

Monitors I think were about £70 each. SVGA 29" 1600*1200 (ish).

If I don't blow them all up i'll put the spare ones on ebay when I'm finished.

demon star, i don't think you can do much with a p2 333mhz machine

I got it for nothing, the screen had really bad burn, i think it had been left turned on for about 10 years :)

Well arcades either give them away or scrap them when they don't have a use for them anymore (usually due to screen burn or they are falling to bits).

I'm working on a new cab which is quite fun, will post pics soon, its something very different.

that's butchery man.. anyone chopping any dedi cab up for mame use is and arsehole. sorry, but you are. i woulda swapped you a 28' jamma cab for that, and given ya a pc for nawt.

there's collectors out there for this sort of stuff, and early polygon based games are getting rarer by the day, in fact some are more rarer than 80's stuff, look at virtua fighter for example, all the cabs were converted to run that tosh football game, and the originals are extreemly hard to find. also it don't matter if the game is emulated or not, because when all the cabinets have been chopped up to run emulated versions, the originals no longer exist at all for real.

:) check if it's original (sega seals in monitor bezel)

..if it is, any chance you could ask the guy who owns the place/cab if he will sell it (or trade it for something else?) i've been looking for an original vf for ages :)

looks like ya can strike gold without thinking!
