Lol, CDE sounds like something we're all familiar with!

Well, the idea of PND is already catching on in Linux at large through CDE, or 'Code, Data, and Environment'. It is the same idea as PND, maybe they'll have 'CDE compliant' distros or some such. Not directly related to PND or Pandora, but I think it is a little funny.

How wonderful. How terrible.

I had expected something like this at some point. I hope it catches on, and I hope it doesn't, at the same time.

The downside to this is that it abandons the advantages of shared libraries-- that is, less redundant iterations of the same libraries over and over. Of course, it also resolves dependency hell, which is fine with me. As hard drives and other media gain more space per dollarpound, we're going to see less and less emphasis on restricting file size.

The great thing about this is that it's a step closer to the "compile once, run anywhere" idea that Java and Windows/Mac have made popular.

damn, that's fugly.

no wonder unix types stayed console fans for so long

I think it's beautiful :(

I miss old-looking things like this. They just had a certain... look and feel about them... an absence of smooth-flowing graphical transitions that are so prevalent today.

I look at things like Mac OSX and Windows 7... and even GNOME/KDE, and it looks pretty, but where's that good old "computer graphics" look and feel? There was a time when the creators of movies, commercials, music videos, and even paper advertisements went out of their way to make things look "computerish," (I believe that was called the 80's) but nothing looks "computerish" anymore. People are too focused on things looking "pretty." Bah. Humbug.

win2000 had the best gui ever in my opinion

I see everything in grey + a shade of blue ;)

quite literally, as I use Clearlooks + redmond as my theme on ubuntu

i remember someone showing me the first linux pc i ever saw. 256 shades of grey and pink and 2 giant eyes following my cursor. how depressing :p

The first Linux I saw had an all black theme with gray font, pain to use, but it still had those white eyes following the cursor. It was one of my brother's wife's brother's(brother in law?) and he did not explain what Linux was very well, it wasn't until 5 or so years later I got a proper introduction from a friend.

I've been using Linux since slackware in 1997, I never thought it looked any less pretty than Windows, especially windows 95 back then .. Although back then I had a computer that could do more than 256 colors(colours for the EU folks). I played with all sorts of Windows Managers, some better than others.

Currently I use plain old Gnome it suits me perfectly, Usually trim down the dual bars that it defaults to one on the bottom.

The new KDE looks great, but so many quirky interface differences puts me off.

Edit:: And yes I capitalised Windows when not referring to Microsoft Windows.. I roll that way.
