why not try Puppy Linux, you can keep your windows me installation intact without it being effected and puppy linux is quick enough, might help you get used to linux as well.
Suggesting puppy linux to someone new to linux is like saying "try out some Japanese cuisine" and giving them a tank full of goldfish and a bag of Uncle Ben's.biomood posted on May 19 2006 at 01:41 PM said:why not try Puppy Linux, you can keep your windows me installation intact without it being effected and puppy linux is quick enough, might help you get used to linux as well.

It's slackware. It's very good, but not user friendly. Those two terms are mutually exclusive, it seems.sam fisher posted on May 19 2006 at 03:12 PM said:Is that anygood and more to the point. Is it user friendly?

One, I'm not gay so shut up. I am now going to moan at you. I have installe dplenty of linux distros. It was a tricky situation due to the way my computer supplier had set up teh partitions. And Ubuntu needed the empty space that windows had marked as a FAT32 partition. Of course ubuntu always decided to format the wirong part of that extended partition and hence 'destroyed' windows. But I needed to reistall it anyway so shut up your are 'gay'. Now im off to do exams....Feeg posted on May 22 2006 at 09:24 AM said:If you can get it to work, SLAMD64 would probably be the way to go. I never had any luck with it though and just stuck with regular old Slack 10.2 for the longest time.
All the other 64bit distros I tried were really bloated and slow.
I'm glad I went with Slackware, because even though it's the old cliche, it really does teach you how to get your operating system working the way you want. If you've got a modicum of intelligence and know how to be polite on internet forums, the Slack community (try www.linuxquestions.org) is helpful.
All that said, with a fair bit of Slackware experience under my belt I've just switched over to Ubuntu, because I want a 64 bit distro that works, and I want instant hardware support that doesnt require hours of debugging.. I'm busy with life atm, so no time to get it working -just right-
On the plus side, Ubuntu has detected everything I've thrown at it. It's slower than Slack though, even running at 64bits. I blame the old version of Gnome on it, and I reckon the next release is going to be blisteringly fast.
Oh, and Sam Fisher - it's a pity Ubuntu was "gay" and blitzed your partition.. but the only operating system install I've used that ever did anything I didn't directly ask it to, or confirm, was some Windows variants. I think whatever you're ascribing the "gay"ness to must be between your chair and the keyboard.
What's the onboard video chipset/motherboard make and model, perhaps we can see if it's actually supported by Linux.. you might be wasting your time trying.. since if it isn't, you simply wont find a distro that suits your machine.
