I love FreeBSD, but I would never suggest any BSD to a newbie unless they were serious about learning about the guts of a Unix-like system. The same goes for Slackware, Gentoo, etc.epitaph posted on May 15 2006 at 09:16 AM said:

and, though I haven't tried it I've heard good things about PCLinuxOS.
There are others, I'm sure, but these are the first ones that come to mind. Also, if you are interested in trying a BSD but aren't looking to fiddle with the system at all after installation, then PC-BSD and DesktopBSD are worth looking into, but I'd doubt that even they are as newb-friendly as the aforementioned Linux distros.
